hi guys one quick question, i live in Europe (Portugal), everytime i make a buy in groupees or humble bundle my bank takes some cents from my account due to the tax conversion rates. Which is best in this case to save some money, credit card or paypal?

Another thing i noticed is when i buy from Fanatical Rugeley with Paypal there's no money taken from my bank account in terms of tax conversion rates.

I didnt associate my cc with paypal, i normally recharge paypal account with 10 € minimum.

thanks in advance

if you buy in USD (groupees) there's no big difference between Credit Card+conversion fees and Paypal (PP will do conversion for you, fees are included, if you add you credit card to your PP account, PayPal will let you chose who will do the conversion)

if you buy from Fanatical, you pay in Euro, so no conversion (but taxes, cause you're EU)

hope to have understood your question :D

I use PayPal normally - how it works with bank accounts varies widely I'm sure.

When making HumbleBundle purchases using my bank card it would complete the purchase in USD rather than GBP - it would charge a flat rate for the conversion, convert it at their rate and would have additional 2-3% fee on top.

Needless to say, I decided not to do that again.

If your bank charges extra fees for the conversion on top of the conversion itself - then I'd go PayPal. But otherwise the difference between PayPal and your bank would be negligible.

so PP is better overall than CC when it comes to the tax conversion fees?

at least for fanatical.

overall, I think so.. I use paypal too most of the times, there are lots of comparisons in websites like this one -> https://www.finder.com/paypal-vs-us-banks-for-international-transfers
I'd go with paypal and as WorstShot said though, many times the difference is negligible

All websites should have VAT (tax) included in their price, so there shouldn't be such thing as "tax conversion fees". What you're probably talking about are "currency conversion fees" and whether paypal or bank is better for those probably depend on what bank you're in.

I personally mostly use paypal to buy things online, but I have it set on my paypal account that my bank is ALWAYS the one that does the currency conversion because they have better exchange rates than paypal.

If you buy a bundle from Indiegala, the price is shown in Euro. You think "ah cool, so 6 euro" you go via paypal and you could be paying almost 7 euro since they add on the tax AFTER you checkout. Indiegala's the only one that I know of that does this. It's very annoying and feels a little underhanded if I'm honest. They should just add the tax into the price shown on site.

As far as I know that's illegal. Prices for european customers HAVE to include VAT (tax) in them.

Yes, it is illegal to do that over here. But I wonder if the law is different if the company is based out of the US. If not, then yes, what they are doing isn't legal.

it is a mystery why they still do it (and get away with it), in the eu you have to pay vat (they are italian)
I'll guess nobody was complaining loud enough ...

Meh. People have complained. They just come back with the "EU customers need to pay tax" something that anyone with half a brain already knows. I've bought a couple of bundles from them that were good deals even after the price increase because I wanted most or all of the games. BUT, I have cancelled other transactions when I saw what was about to be charged to PP deciding I didn't want it badly enough. XD I'm sure I'm not the only one who backs out at that point (logging into PP). They are losing sales due to their shenanigans.

I have never read their small print! maybe they are a b2b site :)
I dunno which loophole they got, but it is the only eu site thats add the taxes after/with the transaction.

don't get me wrong ... I love Indygala ... but that feels strange and I hope they fix it for the eu customers.

Never had any problem buying with CC in HB. The change rate is even quiet fair, but no additional fee.
It's not even in euro where I live so...

I prefere pp ... to stay on save side, don't spread your cc number!
only give away your cc# if it is necessary!

PP is superior because you have no fees when sending EUR across Europe if you're from Portugal. I'm doing group buys for several good years now, with various hosts, and PP is still the best option for both them and me. As long as your host is also from Europe and accepts EUR on PayPal, you're basically free of all fees. If you're buying yourself, then you can specify in which currency you want to pay, but there is small fee for currency conversion on PP as well, although in my case that fee is much much lower than the same one that bank applies on my card.

Not to mention that you have chargebacks and disputes implemented, so if anything bad happens you just click the button, provide proof and get your money back, regardless of what, where and when you bought. One time I was buying some game for my friend off G2A and the key didn't work - I wrote to support, they told me "we're not responsible for the validity of the keys, contact the seller", I replied with "I'm not responsible for the funds I sent to you, contact PayPal" and had the dispute handled with PP in 5 minutes, regardless of the rules G2A operates under. The same happened with a few other sites - I buy the product, if the product doesn't work then I get the money back through PP and I don't need to go through ToSes and pathetic people telling me on support that I can't get my money back because reasons, of course I can, always.

By definition all banks will charge extra for currency conversion from your credit/debit card. There probably are special accounts or other functionalities to avoid them, but they're almost always paid too, such as multi-currency account. In PP you can store as many currencies as you want, and you never pay extra for using them.
