Do you type "Thanks" on giveaways?

Creators used to blacklist for not saying thanks. I am not using blacklist just get silently annoyed by them.
Luckily the community is slowly catching up, so there are weeks I get less than 100 generic thanks messages now, which is nice.

Exactly, a few years ago before the whole notification thing not saying thanks upon joining giveaways would land you on a blacklist. Nowadays, the opposite is true.

I always say thanks when I win a GA...
but I would get really annoyed if everyone entering would say thanks

Same. With thousands of people entering (depending on the game), its a bit ridiculous.

I say thanks when I win or when I think a giveaway is particularly awesome.

Just seems rude not to.

Even older than blacklisting, once upon a time, if you didnt have as many comments as giveaway entries, you were 'not a good member'

People don't do it by themselves, scripts or bots do it for them (most of the time).
And usually, they don't even say thanks when they win (when it would be expected).

Personally, I only comment in giveaways when their creators ask for something, otherwise I just say thanks when I win.

This is partly why i think people should do direct Friend list transfers, instead of just sending it off to some randomly entered e-mail.

My first GA is still counting toward a 7 day re-roll. Clearly whoever won it didn't even check back on the comment i left after it ended. And I'm still waiting for that person to accept my friend request, even though i can see in my friends-list that he or she has been online several times after.

I haven't been getting any chatbox notifications from steam recently .
I only know someone was trying to contact me if i open up the "0 unread chat messages" link in my browser and i can see the most recent peeps in the top of the chatbox list.

Not sure if it's been happening with other notifications as well.

Well, I type "thanks" (or something) in every giveaway I enter (unless the creator says in the description that thanks are not allowed). Nowadays I only enter wishlisted giveaways and I just don't feel good if I don't do it.

Nowadays, I find myself typing "thanks for the whitelist" more than I click "enter giveaway".

I blacklist those. It's extremely unfair for the rest of the community who doesn't cheat, so to speak.
It's a big red flag to see the exact same comment on every giveaway they've entered, I usually do those checks individually.
It also helps when you leave an important comment in the description and notice none of them respond to it; I do the same thing as you, anyway. Whitelist giveaways are a different thing, though. uwu

I have some interesting data from my past "experiments":

  1. https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/eqheZ/resident-evil-revelations-2-biohazard-revelations-2, I asked not to comment, I got 34.
    • Apart from the obvious rebels, the others were clearly either copypasted, or made by bots;
    • I didn't blacklist anyone though, I just wanted to scare them...
    • then, out of almost 3000 people (one even entered the same instant the giveaway was available), only a bit more than 100 found a (not so) secret giveaway.
  2. https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/WzfRr/the-emerald-maiden-symphony-of-dreams
    • this time, the hidden giveaway was for another copy, so the data is more accurate
    • 965 entries in the public one (which I had to re-roll), 23 in the hidden one (2.4%).

Hmm... I sorta remember...... Yep. I entered your biohazard ga and the linked snakebirds ga. I thought that was a great way to do things. I never won either but I liked seeing it. It gave those of us who actually read the ga notes a much better shot at the second ga where the bots did not go.

As for the instant entry. I've done that. And it was me manually entering. While looking at the wishlist page I just happened to hit refresh a split second after he submitted it, It just happened to pop up right where I could quickly click. After I entered, I then noticed it was only a few seconds old. I remember thinking "oh crap" he will think I'm a bot when I'm not. I'm pretty sure I've done this at least 2 times.

Are you sure it was really instant? It might just have been after a few seconds.
In the case I'm talking about, the giveaway had a postponed start, and the user in question entered exactly at the same instant it was possible.
I'm sure it's a bot, because he never said thanks, not even when entering, on any of the (many) giveaways he won so far.

ok. Not "instant". It was a few seconds, under 10 as I remember it being a single digit. So my entry would be a second before I saw that but still a couple seconds after he must have hit the submit button. I just remember thinking that was very very close and I was hoping the guy did not think I'm a bot.

This reminds me of a Rocket League giveaway I saw a while back (https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/AIZn2/rocket-league) where there was a hint at another giveaway in the user's youtube page, which turned out to be another copy of the game (https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/WFuN2/rocket-league). 2996 public entries vs 38 for the private one. Kind of amazing how few people will take the time to actually read giveaway descriptions.

Yeah. I enjoyed that 2nd experiment. It was very interesting watching it and noting how few bothered to read anything. I find there are so few giveaways that have any description at all, so it's automatic for me to read it if there's text present. Makes me wonder just how many of the original 965 actually had eyes behind the click.

Out of thankfulness that someone made the ga.
I mean it's not like they land here on themself. Someone actually takes time and effort to give us a chance to win a game...
Why I often say thanks after winning, so people don't think I'm a bot, since I just read in a post above that's apparently a thing o_O

It's called common courtesy. When somebody offers you something, you respond by saying "thank you".
Next week, we're going to learn about savoir vivre. :B

Taking part in a giveaway is like playing lottery, which is nice. However blacklisting someone for not thanking you is like forcing everyone who participates to beg. This is weird and serves no purpose other than boosting ones ego, while kind off degrading the participants. If one wishes to thank you then let him thank you because he really wants it not because he might get blacklisted from future giveaways. A giveaway should come with no strings attached, otherwise it's not a giveaway anymore. I've never asked for something in return when I gave something away.

"thanks for the chance" is the worst one. Obviously done by some greasemonkey script.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why would you think that?
To be honest: I'm pretty sure I've handwritten "Thanks for the chance..." quite a few times in the past since I like to vary how I thank people. Doesn't mean I didn't handwrite it since I've never used scripts to enter any GA. I doubt you can know for sure if it's a script based on a single comment.....unless the person uses the same comment on every GA he/she enters.

Of course some people can type that by hand, but after several hundred giveaways, you start to notice a pattern.

Worse is the "ok thanks in advance!", particularly after you've left specific instructions in the giveaway not to say thanks...

You're supposed to thank the GA creator if you've actually won it. Otherwise, I don't think it's necessary. I strongly discourage it on my giveaways. Flooding the creator's inbox is not nice.

Honestly I tend to do it (when I remember) because i'm honestly grateful for having a shot at winning a game that I want to play.
Then again: enough times I either forget, or see a wall of thanks-comments and then figure that maybe adding more to that is too spam-full for the creator.

I was curious what expectations are within the community, but I think it generally follows my sense of decency, thanks after winning, but be cautious on commenting for every giveaway, mostly just the rare expensive submissions.

It is honestly quite sad that we have gotten to this point. I used to personally thank the creator in every giveaway in the past since I appreciated him doing so. I do not really remember that many people blacklisting for not saying thanks. What I have fresh in memory are tons of people blacklisting one for being polite and thanking them. Right now I am only thanking the creator in the case when I win.

I can understand that flooding of the reply system with thank you is not exactly desirable, more in case you are running multiple conversations on the forums; However this does not seems enough of a reason to be an asshole to people who want to thank you for your generosity.

It's almost always auto-scripts.
I'm not saying that idly, I've actually kept tabs on the patterns, and had plenty of those involved admit to the fact.

I quite appreciate it when people read my prompts and even moreso when they reply to them..
But it's unfathomable to me that spam, regardless of content or sentiment, could ever be considered respectful.
But, y'know, I understand that others may have different expectations, so I don't outright hold them to my own..
..but when the majority of those involved are proven to be outright and deliberately disrespectful [by way of entering via auto-join scripts and never reading your giveaway descriptions], it becomes problematic and exasperating.

Yes. I used to only thank the creator when I won, but recently I only enter wishlist giveaways, so I'm extremely grateful when someone makes a giveaway for a game that's on my wishlist and thank them. I couldn't care less if they find it annoying or blacklist me.

I always whitelist people who win a game and say thanks and blacklist those who win and they don't.
EDIT: I feel sad for the 2 guys who blacklisted me for this opinion..it is common sense to say thanks when someone makes you a present in real life
