What exactly is the point of a fake giveaway? The site awards points (the 10%) to everyone when the giveaway ends? Couldn't it be set to make it give points when set to received (and possibly a week after if the gift wasn't set to received or not received. Obviously not awarding when flagged as not received).

Most likely they would be banned from the site.

Well...
We all gather up on the chat and open our pockets. Count up the money we have and hire an assassin for that ammount of money. When the job is done (the assassin kills the troll) he brings us his head and the mods impale it and put it on the site. Very middle ages style... long story short, don't do it.

What do you do when you don't receive a gift?

FAQ says:
"I won a giveaway, but haven't received the gift.
The giveaway creator has 1 week to email it before you can mark the gift as "Not received". If it's been more than 24 hours since the giveaway ended try and add the giveaway host to Steam and remind them to send the gift."

So does that mean the right thing to do is:

  • Wait 3-4 days,
  • If nothing happens, add the person to your Steam friends in some vain hope to talk to that person and keep waiting,
  • If nothing happens even after a week has passed click 'Received Gift?' (No)

and hope that mods would deal with that person, that's all?

I think as soon as someone doesn't deliver any prize they listed, that should be enough for them to be perma banned. The stance needs to be this hard as fake prizes completely undermines the system. I mean, why enter into hundreds of prizes, each with hundreds of other people at a time (it seems the average entry:win ratio is something like 50-100:1) if there's a good chance the prize isn't real?

Maybe a probationary status after an undelivered giveaway would be better. Like not allowing that user to enter giveaways or start new ones until he/she fixes the current issue by giving the present. While still keeping the mark as a strike one, with three strikes resulting in a permanent ban.

But as a person who's first win turned out to be a fake giveaway (on the last few hours of a week long wait at the moment), I must say that waiting a week while it is quite obvious the giveaway is a fake (from the giver's profile) is so boring. So adding another week to that wait while the user is having his/her last chance to fix doesn't sound any more fun.

In the end, I guess banning people without mercy may be the only way. With 7,945 Members according to statistics, it's not like we are going to run out of people anyway ;)
