Kinguin has recently introduced premium accounts offering the following advantages :

  • 10% off every game (which are already cheaper than from steam)
  • free game every month
  • free game when buying premium
  • price guarantee
  • higher priority on pre-orders & tickets
  • special deals
  • chance to win prizes

Somehow it reminds me IGN Prime but more game sided.

What will you do ?

Buying
Waiting for reviews
Closing the page with a loud "NOPE"

1 month = $ 11,20
12 months = $ 84,09

Would consider for:
1 month = $ 0
12 months = $ 0

"Hey kids, we aren't getting enough money from stolen game keys, would you just casually throw your money at us like you do with Steam? 'Kaythanksbye!"

They're just as much to blame for that (maybe even less) as the ones who weren't questioning the purchase of hundreds of copies of the same game with credit cards. As far as I read on that whole fiasco the ones who bought the keys got the money refunded AND got to keep the game when uplay (?) reinstated the keys. Morally I think they're better then steam who still sells games that don't work on anything newer then win 98 while adopting a no refund policy (Yeah I know that they finally allow refunds)

That aside... Still wouldn't pay for "premium".

I'm not talking about one exact case though. Kinguin and G2A are grey market. Even their non-second-hand store is not a legit reseller and you cannot find one single publisher, no matter how indie it is that will say "Yes, we sold these keys to this store and they actually paid us money for those keys."
Or who their owners actually are. They are registered as a Singapore company, but they started their business in Central Europe, just like how G2A is suspected to be a Polish front of unknown Russian backers (because it is sure as hell that the company is not actually owned by the same nationality of people as its corporate registration). The whole financial setup is just shady, not just their actual practise.

Your quote was strictly about that one case though. Kinguin and g2a are 2 different sites. Kinguin is connected to g2play and g2a is... apparently backed by paypal. So far the only negative thing that people keep mentioning is "that one case" (As you can see in the 3rd comment bellow this). Now how they get those keys and all... what guarantee you have about keys you get through trades here? Or anywhere else? Even humble bundle has had issues with keys from their gift links that lead to unclaimed pages but with claimed keys... and humble bundle's reply was "we can't help you because you tried to give that game you bought from us as a gift on a giveaway site like steamgifts".

At the same time this is how kinguin decided to solve a pre-order problem with a GTA V
"We have unfortunately received information from the developers of GTA V that the box key, which was sold in our store, is not going to activate the game on Steam. This means that along with the key you would have to own a physical copy of the game to activate it.
We are very sorry for the situation and would like to adequately compensate you for the inconvenience caused. We can offer you 2 options to solve the issue with your Pre-Order:
Refund in balance of your full payment with a 2 euro bonus, a mystery Steam key AND a 10% discount code you can use when making a new purchase in our store.
100% of your money back.
Please let us know which of the above-mentioned options you choose, you can use the link below to contact us :
redacted
Please accept our sincerest apologies and see you soon in our store!"

Yes I'm cherry picking but hey that can be said about the negatives comments regarding them also... my point being that if you focus on the negatives everyone single reseller is shady be it legit or not.

On the other hand this particular case can also be seen like this:
"Oh, shit, our stolen GTA V codes were actually invalid… lets poke their eyes out with some giveaway bundle keys and a gift card they can only spend at us, or give them their money back and hope the next scam won't be found out this fast."
It is all the question of phrasing it. This is what marketing is all about, and if you cna learn to see through the bullshit, you can avoid many, many traps in all fields of life.

Even if you look at it that way it's still a better answer then the humblebundle's answer and steam's answer before they implemented refunds.

what would be your alternative to metacritic (other than to not use a site like this at all)?

also, which games >70% are so shitty? i guess you talk about the typical targets of hate, like AssCreed or CoD? ^^

It's true metacritic is a biased system but a lot of people use those scores to judge whether or not a game is worth it rather than... you know... reading a review or two. :(

I prefer not to buy from sites like that, the profit goes to the wrong people who buy games in countries where they are cheap and abuse the efforts of developers/publishers to make the game cheaper for less advantaged countries by cutting them out of sales in other countries.

"free game every month" - nice way to dump a stash of stolen keys before they get too hot.

Don't have to be stolen, there are enough giveaways these days - failing that just buy 1 non-bta humble bundle per customer per month and split the games.

I don't use them, but I did have a look - I wondered why anybody who paid with paypal would pay extra for the guarantee.

Surely raising a ticket with paypal, which costs nothing, would be the best option if the key were a dud.

As for the Steam gifts (I'm looking especially at the RUS / CIS ones) you'd have to be mad to gamble your steam acct. to save a few dollars.

You're right... also 70% Metacritic is very vague. They could be selling off slowly piece be piece stuff like the $1 Tiers of AAA Humble Bundles, and would still make a whole lot of revenue (considering that everybody is paying 10 bucks)

I got Metro 2033, which is not a particularly high value game but it is a good one. It was a CD key from a box, so that's a bit sketch but it's Kinguin, you don't do it without being willing to risk the sketch.

Metro 2033 is actually a very good game, but it has been bundled at least twice before and if I remember correctly it was even given away for free once in the humble store. So that tells a lot about their supply.

I think it was facebook, where it was given away for free, not Humble Store (but then again I might be wrong or maybe we're both right).

HB Store is confirmed here, but also there was apparently a site were you could legally download it for free, based on this (you had to like them on FB, so probably what you've said). So anyway, it's safe to say, that Kinguin is just dumping their stash, from which they don't expect any significant revenue anymore.

You left out the best part, there is a cap to how much you can buy with that 10% discount every month. It's like $100. I don't really think the premium is worth it regardless.

Takes some wicked math skills to see that for 10€ (apparently $11.20), you get a discount of 10€ (apprently $10?) at most -- yeah cool. If you spend less (BUT WHO WOULD EVER!), you just paid your "free" game.

That's not as "exciting" as their pyramid scheme, though.
