cleaned your computer? Or rather, when was the last time you actually took the time to open up your computer to check if everything's running good on the inside?

I opened up mine a few hours ago, and I couldn't believe the amount of dust caked on top of the heatsink and wirings. I swear if it hadn't been for the cotton swabs, I would still be trying to get those dust chunks out of the slots with tissue paper! The most I've gone is removing the ram, and the graphic card. Still haven't mustered enough courage to dismantle everything in there.

What about you guys?

THE HORROR

You should clean it. If a computer has fans, it can get damaged if the fans become too dirty

Effective troll is effective?

Seriously bro, an AIO is likely MORE susceptible to dust because thermals are tighter.

I clean it every few months

I'm definitely going to make that a habit. Last thing anyone needs is a dead cpu thanks to overheating.

My old laptop's graphics card became too hot and burned the mainboard :D

Ouch..speaking of laptops, I've never tried opening up one before. They always have some sticker somewhere saying if you dismantle it, it voids the warranty or something...

Be careful when blowing your computer's fans. You can cause damage because of electromagnetic induction

That doesn't change anything. It still can be full of dust! You need to clean it anyway!

^ ;) My old laptop did gather some dust at the ventilation underneath. I used to clean in now and then.

I clean it atleast once in 3-4 months. I just open it up and use canned air to blow dust out. Then, if needed, you can use those small ear cleaning things (forgot how they are called) and some special cleaning stuff (that has alcohol in it) to clean all the coolers. If you haven't cleaned it for a year or so take off CPU cooler and change thermal paste (thermal grease).

Dude I cleaned mine a while back, dust had gotten in everything, 'specially fans and heatsinks. Took me like 20 minutes to do.

Idle temp of my vid card before cleaning? 42 degrees or so. After? Around 31 xD

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The temp always scares me! Especially when I'm playing games, or running any resource intensive program. I thought abt getting coolers for the cpu, but well, I just decided not to for some reason. Didn;t really think much of them at the time haha. Amazing how dust ends up being the first thing to kill your computer...that's what happened to my previous pc. Never bothered to open it up, and after about 3 years it gave out. :(

The left side of my tower has a window and most of the time when I peek in it's fine, I have enough fans in there going at high enough speeds to keep the dust off. I do clean it prior to attending LAN-Parties though. This usually happens once every 1-3 months.

How many fans do you have in there? Hmm and have you by any chance used dust filters for those fans before? Any idea if they're good?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They're crappy ones that came with my case but they, combined with my ATI 6990HD's unnecessarily high constant fan speeds keep the dust out of my tower fairly well.

If you're a frequent computer user, I'd say there's a high chance you'll not like what you're going to see inside your computer. As long as you know what you're doing, you should be able to clean you computer up without problems.

Better question would be is when was the last time you cleaned your keyboard?

I did the other day after 6 years of use. Wow was it dirty under those keys.

Keyboards are horrible, especially if you have some pets that shed hair. I don't even eat much food at my desk, but between dog hair and crumbs it's a fucking mess beneath my keys.

Been putting it off until yesterday. Except... I guess I missed that deadline. So I'll probably clean it out (and add my new Christmas gift hard drive!) tomorrow. Or today, since you reminded me. It's been about two years and I expect to find a lot of dust, but the last time I cleaned it out, the built-in filters had actually done a very good job of keeping the dust away from the vitals.

Ah you have filters! What kind of filters do you use? Oh, and mind sharing what kind of a hard drive you got for yourself? :)

Just what came with the case (Antec P182). This random internet pic probably shows them best (there's another one identical to the one shown in the fan inlet below).
The new drive is a 2TB WD Green something-or-other... wasn't too picky about it; a gift from my sister. :)

I've had PC's run 4+ years and I never cleaned them out. 4 years is about as long as most will last as far as video-gaming goes so I never bothered. I just bought a new one, sure it still worked but it didn't play the newer games well.

Mine PC is always "opened",because there are always things that I need to do ( for example changing parts, upgrading, cleaning, plus some of parts "like" to "jump" of their place and I need to put that again in and etc) and because my video card doesn't have additional ventilation (though I installed one additional, but it didn't helped a lot) it gets hot after playing and keeping my box opened helps :P. So I check my PC and dust quite often :) And yes, I'm female computer nerd :DD
