So last yesterday my new XFX RX480 8GB Black OC arrived. Seriously stoked.
I installed it and immediately ran 3D Mark to see how it compared to my R9 380. More than a 50% performance increase across the board. I jumped into Fallout 4, maxed the graphics, set it to 4K and nearly creamed myself. It was that good... except my mouse was playing up. and My keyboard... Hmmm...
I reset the PC and booted again... hmm now KB wasn't working at all. No lights. No Power. Same on the mouse.
I reset once more and got to the POST screen and locked up.
The PC reset itself.
It stalled on POST again.
This time I noticed 2 red lights in my case. There should only be one telling me it's using BIOS chip 1.
I read my manual - the second red light meant that BIOS chip 2 was active - possibly due to a fault in chip 1.
I reset it once more and... nothing. Fans working, XFX flashing a sexy color at me, but nothing on my screen.
Using my phone I googled problems. Found a few fixes that I tried, Resetting BIOS, Clearing it, reseating RAM, unplugging everything etc. No POST, No beeps. Nothing. my motherboard I bought 6 months ago , that I had been saving for, for over a year was dead.
I went to bed.
I got up this morning and called the store I bought it from. Ben walked me through everything I had done last night. Nope. Send it back. It's under warranty but it'll be at least 2 maybe 3 weeks oh...and leave the chip in OK? We'll test it too as we sold you that and it may be the problem.
OK... I still have my old board and chip.
I jumble it all together and get it working so I can print off the invoice.
I head up to the post office in town (about an hour away - I live in the bush), and send it off - another $35...
I head home and get a flat tyre about 300m from home. In my 4WD, that's another $200. (I'm on a retired pension btw - not struggling but it's maybe 3 times a year I can buy a few parts for my PC or car.)
I get home and as I walk in the door, I'm informed that my 6 year old has smashed my Smart TV in a temper tantrum - the one I'm still paying off. That I still have $500 left to go.
And the Old PC that I'm typing this on... the caps are whining... it's gunna go too...
But you know what?
It's OK.
I have my family - wife is pissed about the TV - she's missing her shows and the old TV we gave to a neighbor when we got this one (She's elderly and didn't understand why her TV stopped working when they shut the analog signals down).
The cyclone looks like it's going to pass us by (Big one moving across us since yesterday).
And I had a good dinner.
There are people worse off then me, and after reflection, I'm still luckier than many.
And of course I have my Friends on Steamgifts :)

i love your attitude, Friend on Steamgifts! i'm not saying you're not a hero, but... relevant link redacted
here's hoping that your computer gets sorted, that your wife catches up on her shows, and that you're always able to maintain that chill :D

I would rather have a nice Smart TV than a 6 year old but hey at least you're still happy.

I like how you stay possitive man! Not sure what caused your pc problems, but maybe the gpu caused a false contact and shortcircuit the mobo? Had something simular with the tires few years back. Short story: had a flat, replaced with 2 new front tyres. Came home, ex-wife drove to the local pharmacist, another nail, again 1 new tyre within 3 hours... The positive, never had any costs on that car except that :-)
Keep smiling buddy, things can only get better!

Well... The way I see it, if I lose my temper, what does that accomplish? It won't fix the TV, nor the tyre or the PC. If I went FMJ on my kid that would only make him AND me feel bad.
Shrug it off and look for a reason to feel better :)

Damn, what a crap day.
Did you test your old PC with the 380 again?
It could be the 480 killed it, or the PSU is dying.
Weirder things have happened.

Yeah I ended up putting the 380 back into the 2500K, apparently I could have put the 480 in, but i must admit I was worried if it was the 480 that killed my later Mobo, what would it do to the earlier one? Apparently it should be able to handle it but I'll wait until the other board comes back. It's not going anywhere :)
PSU should be ok - it's a Cougar 1200W Bronze 80% gaming supply - and less then 12 months old - I've never come close to maxing it, I just wanted a huge one for when I was going to make my rig a 4xgpu (Dreams huh? lol)

Definitiely overkill on that PSU. Bronze?
The higher the efficiency the better quality components and circuitry used generally.
Let's hope your 480 isn't the source of all evil :D

Oh I'm sure it will work out - Hopefully they replace the board and we'll try it again. It it blows again then I'll just have to look into a bigger board next quarter :/

Could be worse. My imaginary girlfriend just left me for another guy.

But seriously, that's shitty luck. Good luck with getting everything back together. And take that TV off your kid's allowance, when he has one. :)

Puts my 6 year old in perspective. He can be difficult, but I don't think he'd ever break the TV. He's smart enough to know that he'd be losing on TV and gaming. :)

He's already been told I'm raiding his bank account to replace it - I've been putting in $10 a week since he was born so he'd have a head start when he wanted his first car, and while I'll feel a bit guilty about taking it, he has to learn there are consequences for actions.

It is kind of weird - 3 times in my life is seems that Murphys' law really has it in for me. They have been the worst days of my life but when I look back and see how lucky I've been overall, I really can't complain.

This might sound strange, but I'm looking forward to retirement in about 3 decades. I'll be able to sit on my backside playing video games all day! XD

Now that I think about it, gamers might be the only people who can enjoy their old age 24/7. So be glad you're a gamer! XD
