Something like that, except I want to bring it back to the real wild: no humans or human buildings anywhere.
The biggest differences would be the open world with co-op multiplayer & more survival/hunting, and progressing your animalcharacter depending on gamechoices (think Black&White with the fat/good/evil monkey).
And of course the other gameplay mechanics you can read about on the info-page.

I'd be scared of zombie sloths. Their speed could be amazing...

Shelter? Sounds good. I'm really looking forward to Shelter 2.
Comment has been collapsed.
Shelter isn't so much about surviving, as it is teaching you about the circle of life itself.
I don't feel like there's a need for a sequel, personally. Has it even sold well? It was like in 2-3 bundles at the same time at one point.

This sounds like a good twist on the open world survival genre.
Just curious tho, are you going to be working on this by yourself or in a team, I don't know how much time you have but if you're by yourself and you only have a semester then it could be a huge amount of work.
Also if you don't mind me asking, What school do you go to?

I'm a 3D modeller and concept artist, part of a small team of programmers, level designer, art designers and one audio designer.
I'm currently finishing 3D-gamedesign in university in Holland.
My graduation project was starting the company by doing a training program for starting entrepreneurs, and getting to a final concept.
Currently the only thing we did was early sketches, researching, and working out the gameplay details.
After that we will start working on the game itself.
We hope to get a prototype (no, not some early access alpha, a much earlier stage than that) around next year.

Well, that would be my dream game. Surviving as any animal I want.

no idea what this topic is about but in case someone would like here is a key to Fortix 2 RLJQ7-NWG5Q-NERBK. Good luck to the first ninja

It sure isn't a concept that hasn't been really explored before. There are games where you play as an animal, but they're often shallow or too arcade-y. I'd be down for a more sim-like game, where you're really experiencing the life of an animal and have control over its choices and the choices of its group. Maybe you could play as a loner.
tl;dr Mount & Blade as an animal. Fund it.

We're keeping games like Black&White and Fable1 in mind, in terms of character progression (get fat if youre lazy, or get strong if you do a lot running/fighting)
Results of our previous research showed people really want co-operative survival, instead of murdering eachother, so that's also a thing we'd like to achieve with the pack system, hunting together on larger prey (like elephants).

If i'm gonna play an animal, i'd rather play a rebel cow. but otherwise yeah always nice to see something on the subject.
Any plans to include things such as deforestation, desertification, endangered species ?
No humans is nice, but poaching, tourism etc would make the game more interesting personally, or at least the consequences of their activities even if they are not present.
Kinda gives more weight to the term "survival", especially if you can play a lion or an elephant.
Any social interactions and activities as they exist in nature ?
Any references to things like literature on the subject/area ( say Kessel ) ?

Social interactions will be in the way of Packs, which are similar to guilds/clans. :)
There will be benefits from being in a pack, like being able to hunt together, and creating territory.
We're really trying to stay away from adding anything human/manmade so we can focus on wildlife survival, but i understand your point.
Maybe we'll add human hunters as an endgame enemy if theres a lot of interest in that. ^^
(nice song)

It'd be interesting to turn this into an inversion on the typical survival genre
Instead of a human being attacked by wild animals, you're a wild animal being attacked by wild animals. Or perhaps even humans.

Well, I am obviously interested, since there aren't many games that allow you to do that.

Answered the survey. Really nice project, hope my answers served you well. Thanks for the giveaway also :D

I've read you only have one audio designer. If you'd like a second, feel free to reply or message me. I can go uncredited or whatever. It'd just be cool to help out with a game's sound design is all.

I would just like to suggest that you be prepared to scrap the dehydration/illness mechanic. If you can make it work that would be excellent, but the main purpose of games is to be fun, and having to find a place to drink every 15 minutes could get annoying.
Regardless, I wish you luck, it's a fantastic idea!
Thanks for the giveaway, and fantastic web design! xD

Thanks for the compliment!
We of course would try to make it fun AND balanced.
The point is to make survival have realistic impact on your character (if you eat fresh kills, you'll get stronger and healthy, but if you eat too much, you'll get fat and slower.
We want to make it something more interesting than 'eat for hitpoints regeneration'.

Rated Meh for multiplayer-only. Sounds nice though, filled out the survey and all.
I, for one, think Realism is rather important in survival games. However, surviving shouldn't become tedious, like (as SJ said), having to drink every 10 or 15 minutes. But since water is so scarce in savannahs, it should definitely play a large role, e.g. finding a water source for yourself/your pack/whatever and having to defend it against others who want water too, decide whether to try and take on one of those packs for water while you're strong or trying to find one on your own, risking to get weak of dehydration and such. Anyway, good luck to you and your project!
(If you add singleplayer, make that 'Best of luck')

The main focus is survival/hunting in PvE, and while prefered in co-op, a 'lonewolf' should be able to play the game, apart for the social parts like the pack stuff and killing large animals.
Kinda like minecraft, which is fine as a singleplayer, but much more fun with others.
The pack-multiplayer PvP is more of an endgame thing, like WoW guilds.

Submitted the survey.
I think after you create the game, you can also work on a DLC for a rain forest with monkeys and what ever is there.
The game has potential, in my opinion ,if done properly.
Good luck.

Hello again, fellow Steamgifters.
I'd like to get some opinions about my graduation gameconcept.
It's a survival game where you get to be a wild animal.
Yep, Lions, wild dogs, and more, in the great plains of the savannah!
I think i've created some interesting ideas for gameplay, which i would like to run by you before we start building.
Read about it here.
To make the feedback easier for me, I've made a little:
-Survey about the info-page-
I believe the only way to make a great game, is to ask the real gamers (you) what they like and need, so I want your opinion first!
it's a part of my graduation project as a 3d developer & gamecompany starter.
Here's a giveaway as thanks! :)
(Edit: Giveaway ended. Thank you all for the great response, and if you're reading this: You're still very welcome to do the survey)
(ps. no, there won't be any zombies in the game.)
