Sometimes i think .... what are the advantages in having thousands of games on Steam ???? Most of them people doesn't even play them!
I'd rather have some few games but good enough in terms of quality!

Well ... the people with a few thousand games (and possibly even countless duplicate copies in their inventories) are probably collectors and feel some sort form of accomplishment or joy from gathering and having so many games. Another plausible explanation is some forms of mental disorder where one symptom is hoarding (in these cases, of video games), or something similar to it. OCD is one such possibility, causes my grandpa to collect movies like there's no tomorrow. It could be a classic case of status, "Ha ha, I have more therefore I'm better!" Of course there is nothing stopping the possibility of a blend of these reasons.

For me it is definitely both. I have exhibited hoarding behavior with my games in that getting new games feels more like a "need" than a "want" and sometimes will do anything to fulfill that "need," which means quantity is unwillingly important to me (though I won't complain). However, I also try to stick with ones I'm interested in and that generally have good reviews, so that is how I tackle the quality aspect (though some have slipped through due to bundles or my one friend who sends me crap games because he thinks it's funny).

"This guy" ... man ... guess I'll have to be a little more active before I get promoted to proper nouns! ;D

Yeah, I've thought for quite a long time about why I like games and why I collect them. So I feel like I have a fairly good understanding of both of the whys.

Maybe the end can be improved by adding a R to cRap ;-)

BTW this game seems nice/fun/exciting/original/nice art/style/mechanics/... I would want to play it some day, let's grab it!!!

I prefer quality these days.
But when I first discovered bundles I was actively buying them, but then I thought "Am I even going to play these games?"
Have plenty of less desirable stuffs from indiegala free promos, though :D

I only collect games I want to play. I don't care about any stats on my steam account. There's lots of games offered for free that I don't even bother with because I don't want them on my account like Hyper Fighters that is free right now on Indie Gala and Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising which they had for free a few days ago.

There's probably about 10 games on my steam account that I will never play. I activated these when I bought my first couple bundles and I didn't think about trading or giving them away.

Well my neighbour have 3k games on Steam and countless gifts and according to him, its a business -_-. Selling games for keys then reselling keys at a higher price and buying stuff with the profit.

Sounds reasonable. But there's probably still some sort of need that collecting games fulfills that would cause him to work so hard to get 3k games on steam.

If someone has 1000, 2000, 3000 games I can assure there are more than plenty high quality ones ones there ;) Other games? Collecting, showing off, backlog building, farming cards etc ;) It's not like you either can have 1000 Shitty games or 300 awesome games. You can have 300 awesome games, 500 good ones and 200 bad ones having 1000 in total ;p

Sounds about right. However I would say "awesome" games are much rarer than that, but that's entirely opinion. Also, if you're smart about it, the number of "bad ones" is much lower than that.

It's unfortunate that I never play like 90% of the games I get from bundles. Still most time it's worth it just for a single game.

Agreed ... why get an amazing game for $20 when you can get an amazing game and some less amazing to utter crap games for $3?

Variety is the spice of life. :)

Bundles are the "problem" though. If you can call it that. Want two or three games from a bundle, you get six to ten anyway.

another "problem" is when you try those games you had no interest in and say "holy CRAP! this is fun!"

Never understood the hoarders. I sometimes feel bad with my current 18%-ish unplayed ratio and try to play games I get. I even removed two dozen games from my library I knew I'll never finish.
And on the other extreme I see people on Steam and especially here who just hoard and hoard with 90+% unplayed ratio. And they are usually regarded as great gamers. But why do people herald people who don't play games as great gamers, will always be beyond me.

... Who exactly is regarding anyone outside of MLG and similar as "great gamers"?
Something smells funny around here.

Its their money, let them spend it how they want. You don't need to go worrying about what other people are doing.

Eh, I don't really care about them, it's the phenomena that intrigues me to some degree. Otherwise I'm content playing what I have.

Maybe I'm biased, but I feel like my explanation might help. It's the fourth post in this thread. Another thing is that time is limited, some people find games they really really like and want to spend all of their time in them even though they have other games to get to. Unfortunately ... my friend is like that with Bad Rats.

No time to play + devs making too many great and interesting games + bundles (whyohwhydidIdiscoverbundles) = half played library at the best of times ;)

It's nice to have everything in one place/frontend. So for me it's mainly convenience. The hoarding aspect is also there because of sales and bundles, but it's really not the main reason why I use Steam. Plus it's nice to have the community, get achievements and share screenshots. It's really the whole 'experience' that makes me want to own games on Steam rather than on other platforms.

personally i have around 1500 games. Of those 1500 games i have "completed" 196, didn't like 122, played 724 and never touched 575 games. Of those 575 my estimate is that around 450 games are bundle games that i have which had little to no interest in buying. Here's a link if you are interested in seeing which games i have played. The thing is most bundles are worth buying if i was going to buy 1 of their games as such i end up getting 2 or 3 games per bundle that i'm not interested in.
The best feeling of having such a big library is that i never have problems on what to play because i always have "new" stuff to try.
Today is my last day of exams and i'm going to have 1 month of holidays so my backlog will decrease drastically this month.

umm, bundled games...
i actually try to play all of them, but most get into "not gonna play it ever" categories
some of them are also better than i though, this one goes into "playing" categories
at least im still helping developer by buying it :p

I usually just get games that I'm interested in. When I started it was about 200 games I had planned to have in total, but not if I finish my WL and get every game on there I would have 1,200 games. Though granted some are only in my library because they were given away for free or I thought "Ooh maybe i'll enjoy this." and sadly a lot of the games I was interested in have not yet been played, but I have played a few gems and unfortunately a few turds.

A lot of my games are from bundles, but a lot of the time if a bundle is cheap enough and I have money I'll buy it and keep the game(s) I want and give the rest away (Just look at my giveaways on this site that should be proof enough)

Quality - I won't even buy bundles unless I want to PLAY at least half of it, and then the other keys I give away anyway. I hate putting games in my library that I never want to play. There are games I wish I could remove...

I continue to buy games that I intend to play....but only when they are on sale of at least 75% off.

There are games I wish I could remove...

You can. Just write to Steam support, and they can permanently remove any games from your library. The only two catches are that they cannot remove individual games, only purchases, so anything from this list. And the other is that your play time/achievements/reviews will stay up even after the removal.

Well i give away most of the games i get from bundles- see no point of collecting while others may have a good time with them. That said I have more than 60 in my library- most of them are bought out of curiosity. I'm just a casual gamer and play mostly on my WIZ console.

Side note, but may have some connection to the topic: regardless of your opinion (or intent to play) about the games you win here, they have to be activated in your Steam library.
