When I first heard Never Ever by Tokyo Girls' Style, I thought the rhythm sounded Latin in origin, but I couldn't identify it. I just don't have enough experience with Latin music to be able to sort through all of the busyness of the background. I tried doing a little research online, but still couldn't find an answer. To me, it sounds like some kind of Samba variation.

Anyhow, I thought I would ask here on SteamGifts in the hope that we have some percussionists who recognize this beat.

Uhhh, what made you think of Latin at first? There are only two associations I get when listening to that link back and forth: synthwave and pop music from the '80. I just don't hear anything Latin there, hmmm

My first impressions were that it reminded me of Miami Sound Machine.

Just the sound of classical guitar and some batucada-like percussions. That gave you the idea of samba

Exactly. I'm not sure it actually is Batucada, however. That is simply my best guess.

I might be wrong, but the instruments all sound synthesized. Talk about "generic".... The Japanese do a lot of sythesized music, so I suppose it wouldn't be unusual were it actually so.

Sounds like it, doesn't it? What is your impression of the percussion?

It does have a 90s Spanish feel to it at times (mostly at the beginning) but seems a bit generic to me, it's probably just to make the song sound more modern and playable at clubs.

Well I feel like there's some spanish guitar vibes there but that's just me, when I listen to the track the first thing that comes to mind was this:

Latino here.

I'm not a musician but I don't hear anything distinct or famous. Sounds like relatively generic or average fair 80s/90s latin music (which did include a lot of synth depending on the artist, say like something by Azucar Moreno like "Noche de Abril"). Not sure that helps.

If I understand what you said, there is nothing you can recognize as Samba, Salsa, Conga, Rumba, or any other well-known Latin rhythms. If that is true, then I guess that answers my question.

Not sure if that was meant to sound sarcastic.

My context was a comment on finding a similar sounding song that happened to be famous or at least very similar, not on genre. For genre, you’d likely need a musician and they’d likely land at some sort of hybrid, if any at all as it’s likely something else at its core with influences of something Latin.

I was not being sarcastic. As I mentioned in my OP, I have been trying to identify the rhythm used (i.e. the percussion section), not the style of the song. I apologize if I was not clear about that. Neither one of us are drummers, but I suspect that you are correct in it being some sort of hybrid, possibly something related to the Batucada.

No worries, just thought I'd pretext in case I was answering while being tone deaf.
