Insurgency was good when it was a mod at the start. Never played past about v5 (0.5 maybe).

WW1 games are the shiz. I loved the HL1 mod 'The Trenches'

I've played both for several hours and I'd vote for Insurgency by miles.

verdune is hellish world war one trench warfare .

From what I heard, Insurgency plays more like Red Orchestra 2.

Maybe he just means the modern military theme? I really, really hope no one's dumb or ignorant enough to think they're similar mechanically.

Memory might cheat me, but wasn't Insurgency a free source mod, even published through Steam itself before? If I'm right, I think that could give a good idea of what to expect. I'm pretty sure I had it installed once in my earliest of Steam days, but never got around to try it thanks to a faulty hard drive.

Verdun! I'm tired of those CoD-Battlefield-Red Orchestra clones (yes, Insurgency, I'm talking about you!).

Red Orchestra/Insurgency is hardly a Cock of Duty or Battlefeel clone.

I watched a little Verdun gameplay and despite it being uniquely set in WWI, it looks more run-and-gun COD-style than Insurgency. Also, what TRUCKER said: RO and Insurgency are not at all like COD/BF. They require a far more tactical and team oriented approach. Note that I'm not a raging fan boy of any of these four games, although I played COD back in the day, I used to and occassionaly fire up BF3, I have more recently played RO2, and I only played a little of the Insurgency mod.

I agree. Verdun does look a little CODish

Thanks people, got Insurgency and it is pretty good! Will probably still pickup Verdun a little bit before official release.

Hope you enjoy it, I know I sure do. Better than CS:GO by a country mile.

Only thing wrong with Insurgency is the number of maps is extremely limited right now.

That night map looks sick though. I'm trying to wait for a sale but you people praising it here isn't helping my self control.

I don't even bother with Counter-Strike. I own Source but not GO and while it's fun with friends, the multiplayer is immensely overrated and... I suck... but it's still overrated.

I never really got in to counter strike GO either. I really wanted to but I just couldn't.

I was in the same boat as you two -- I really tried to like CS, but I could never get past the horrible community or the crappy gameplay. Insurgency has a very helpful community and its gameplay utterly scratches my tactical itch. I can't recommend it enough.

Do you find most players in Insurgency use their mics? To me that's extremely important for an enjoyable tactical and team-oriented game. It sounds as though the Insurgency community might be similar to the Natural Selection 2 community: helpful and communicative. I've been watching Bluedrake42's Insurgency videos and I'm liking what I see (although he might be playing with friends and/or a clan).

In my limited experience so far, the ones using the mics the most are they guys that have the most experience playing, i.e. the guys you want calling out shots and cap points. Personally, I use the mic in Insurgency obsessively, something I don't normally do in other games. Gotta be careful with unnecessary chat because mic effects in the game are environmental, so any opponents nearby will most likely hear you coming unless you're whispering.

You'll find a lot of friendly banter during lull points, which is a refreshing change from the usual immature trash-talk you get in CoD and CS.

Mature banter is good but I'm more concerned with team coordination via mic. The 3D VOIP sounds awesome but I'll have to remember that because I'm not always brief on mic.

The best squads will have good coordination via mic talk, but I have to admit it doesn't happen as much as it should because most of the players are new. Real teamwork takes some getting used to when you're coming off of stuff like CS:GO.

There's a comma rose too for those who prefer communication that way. Works pretty well.

Yes the CS GO crowd has way too many obnoxious college students :P I am one of those obnoxious college students but I don't spam my mic the whole time

Haven't played verdun, but I like insurgency because I wanted to see how it stacked up againsts cs:go on the same engine. Gameplay wise it's alright nothing really new, but it is refreshing from the super over-complicated shooters out there.

Honestly from the look of both games I'd go with Insurgency. It's like CS+RO. RO realism and tactics with CSGO team play and tactics. Verdun really just looks like RO/CoD in a WW1 theme. Still though I hope more WW1 games come out since there haven't really been any.
