soooooo, assuming it can be either a english or french book? or do you need one of both?

From past experience regarding the english books i can say only this:
-Wuthering heights; dramatic piece of drama, wrapped in depressed drama. don't read. drama.
-Robinson Crusoe; the kind of literature you'd need to have read once. i'd reccommend this one really.

It's short, easy to understand (I'm a beginner at French and I had little trouble with it), and amazing. Read the picture version, if you can.

I hate Mark Twain, but I'm in the vast minority there, and Huck Finn was a much better read than Tom Sawyer.
Romeo and Juliet is classic, but if you're not much of a literary person, you might miss out on a lot of what makes it awesome.
I think I recall reading Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights... pretty sure Wuthering was very boring... I'm not sure if Jane Eyre was though. Probably.
Le Petit Prince is one a lot of people seem to like, and I think it might also be very short (no pun intended).
I haven't read Les Mis, but I read Hugo's Notre-Dame and although interesting, that one was very long.
Haven't read most of the others there.

Les Misérables is a classic. You might even get away with watching the movies.

Not likely. The movies hardly even resemble the book because they leave out whole plots.

Every one of them is a great book. If i had to pick though i'd pick either Pride & prejudice or Importance of being Earnest or Madame Bovary or Robinson Crusoe.

I vouch for Austen's satire. "Pride and Prejudice" is an enjoyable read.

the only book I read is robinson crusoe(translated to my homelanguage), and it was a great book, even though I was only like 15 and it was quite hard to understand some of the words and grammar at that time since it was written in quite an old style.

15 too. and the books are in my mother language.. the writers are only French/English

well that's saves some trouble, right now I would rather read something in englisch but at that time, I was not so good in englisch. Still it was quite hard to read because of the old style, it even had a4 pages. I still enjoyed it a lot though.

Whatever you do, DON'T read Jane Eyre, I'm reading it in school at the moment, and it's the biggest piece of crap I've ever read. AND it's a kinda thick book

I enjoyed Honoré de Balzac - Père Goriot but it wasn't easy read because of some really long monologues and it's grim story. If you don't want hard book you might enjoy Mark Twain's - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

I wish I read more when I was younger, now I am reading as much as possible because there aren't enough good stories in games.

I somehow liked Little Prince.

Les Miserables is very long, so disregarding its literary merits, you'll want to skip it because of the time crunch.

If you want the shortest go for the little prince. It took me some hours to read it when I was 10 or so. Though the other books also deserve a try :)

The Importance of Being Earnest is very funny and short. It's a play.

Romeo and Juliet is very short, but it's dense and may be hard to understand if you're not used to works from that time period. It's wonderful.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an easy read and shorter than many of the others on the list, but it's not quite short. Many love the humor and adventure, but I personally hate this book. The characters and plot aren't believable, it's not fun, it's not funny, and the writing style is bland.

Le Petit Prince is VERY short and easy. It's for kids. However, it's also very good. It's not deep or complex though.

Romeo and Juliet has accurate movie versions as does The Importance of Being Earnest. You could read through one of those speedily and then watch a movie to make sure you have full comprehension. I'd recommend one of them or Le Petit Prince for your time limit.

Do NOT watch a movie version of most of the other books. There aren't any films which closely resemble the books for them. You couldn't get by in my class (I teach at the college level - not sure where you are) with the movie versions of anything except the plays.
