What do?
The "profit" you earn is actually Steam credit currency and not real money since you can't withdraw it as legal tender...thus none of it should even be taxed TBH.

Is there a minimum reporting threshold in Germany? In the US I think it has to be over $600 before a company will report your income to the tax authorities (on Form 1099 here). So even if they collect your tax info as a matter of course, your income from that source won't be reported unless it's over the threshold. Do you know what the system is where you live?

well, you can.
but wait till january for the other 200 ;)

Wouldn't you risk an an account deletion when faking it?
That is if they find out of course, but they have the right to do so.

I doubt Valve would do something with your tax information
if anything
use Valve as tax reduction LOL

Why would they need/want it then is the question.
Personal data sells pretty good after all.

I actually only blacklist regifters, free game gifters and non-activaters. No idea why you ended up on my baddie list.

*"Why did I get an email notifying me that I need to provide additional documentation?
For non-U.S. citizens, in cases where you previously provided us with a U.S. address, we may be required to collect additional documentation from you to validate your non-U.S. status. Valve uses a third-party validation service (currently, Compliance Technologies International (CTI)) to receive and validate this additional documentation. The third party will not be permitted to use any information collected from you for any purpose other than validation of your documentation for Valve, and will be contractually obligated to keep any information you provide confidential and secure."*
TL;DR provide them with means to verify that you're not a U.S. citizen/resident and you'll be ok.

Also ich (aus Österreich) hab meine richtigen Daten benutzt und alle meine Freunde auch ;)
Sollte nichts schlimmes passieren..

Comment has been collapsed.

How is what they are doing illegal, they are following the law,and as such it is not unreasonable for them to ask for proof of were you live, other wise you could be some random guy in America trying to get around paying taxes and just say hey i live in Europe and be done with it if no further proof was needed.
Also all your info is already on the internet and can be easily sold so Valve is the least of that worry lol. Also weather you own or rent the games has no bearing on this anyhow,This is simply a tax issue for the U.S. for market sales,so i am not sure why you brought the game issue up since it has nothing to do with you selling on the market. They are not asking for your tax info they are simply asking for proof you live where you claim to live.
Anyhow give them the info they want and do not lie as it could effect your future access to the market if they info you give does not match up,i know some have complained before of not being able to access the market because they just made up some random info from some random addy in the U.S. and when they found out it was fake blocked them for market access.
This is also why i just do badges myself since i am in the U.S. and before the last sale and doing badges i had over 1,000 cards and i will be damned if i am going to take the risk of paying taxes on some stupid fake currency, plus all that effort it was just easier for me to craft badges rather then try sell 1,000 cards on the market and deal with that shit.

I wasn't that aware of US laws, but now that I've read more details about it, I've submitted my data.

... we are required...
That should say it all. What benefit is it to them to 1) have this info if not to fulfill some requirement imposed on them, and 2) lie to you to get this useless info?
It is their legal obligation as a US company operating under US tax law to collect this information once a user reaches certain milestones. They would be setting themselves up for audits and/or fines if they don't comply. There is no way around this besides waiting until next year. That or don't do business with companies based in the US.
Digital goods are absolutely subject to tax under many circumstances in the US.
I live in the US and had to do this once a few years ago. At this point the only consequences were the loss of the min it took to put in the info and that I'm able to sell as much as I want in the market,

I'd like to hear the IRS reasoning since it really is Steam funny money we're getting back...Unless I can make an actual income (you can't withdraw from the wallet without using outside party and going through hoops eg; Paypal) this shouldn't be subject to income taxes. Friggin IRS sticky fingers should be more worried about Valve and other corps/ceos/bankers/megachurches (so many wealthier tax dodgers to pester) paying their taxes....but nope tax shelters, loopholes in the "legal" laws, too much work going after them >.>
Huff
/rant sorry.

Filled out. I'm American. However, there is no way I'll get $20,000 in sales.
This deals more with Amazon Marketplace and Ebay sales.
However, seeing as valve is allowing you to sell things... I think they got caught in a loophole. They are just covering their butts.

Just give them the correct info since every account is one way or other tied to a payment method on Steam, otherwise has restrictions there too. If you submit incorrect information and they try to compare that with your payment credentials you may get in trouble.

So I was just wanting to sell my 600+ Trading cards to clean up my inventory. All good until I've reached "200 listings" and it told me this:
Yeah right, selling 200 cards for 0,02€ profit each requires me to give them my personal data. How stupid. Of course "this does not affect buying" - well played steam, you greedy bastard. Whatever, as always I have to play after Gaben's rules, no choice here. So my question to you is: is it okay to do it? Did you? What were the consequences?
I live in Europe (Germany), so it shouldn't be a problem to give them out, right? I've heard it's a different case for Americans.
/edit I've read a bit more about it, and realized that it only applies to US citizens, and as European you just have to give your data, to proof that you're not living in the US. Still, it's my personal data stored on their servers. Not that I'd be afraid of hackers stealing that data and selling it, but it's just plain stupid, because you cannot ask taxes for digital goods anyways. Plus, it's a digital currency with which you "rent games" and buy digital cosmetics. In the end, all we own is hot air. Should be illgeal what steam is doing there. Oh Lord Gabe, why do want me to hate you?!
Here's 140 giveaway.
