Plus its cheaper and god does Super Mario 3D World look amazing, makes me wish I had one but cant justify the cost right now...

I don't get why would her mother buy a PS4 to a Nintendo fan.
There's no game that fullfill your criteria on PS4 yet. There's a few interesting titles for PS3 though. And of course on Wii U.
Either wait or bring the PS4 back to be changed (which could be a bit rude maybe, it's not for me to decide).

Does he have a WiiU, if not tell her to get that, cheaper and more geared to him, if not maybe a 3DS?

Guys, if she already bought it she probably won't buy him another console, and i doubt she will return it, at any rate imo it would be rude of the op to even recommend it.
From what i saw there aren't many games for either PS4 or Xbox One, i don't think any of the games i saw would suit your friend very well. I wanted to say to look into backward compatibility, and maybe play some games from PS3 or maybe even PS2, but as i saw it doesn't seem to be implemented yet, which is a bummer.
There are about 15 games on PS4 from what i saw, and a few more on Xbox One, and i don't think any of them would suit your friend. Check the games individually and choose what you think he will have fun with, you know him better then us

"and i doubt she will return it"
Why would you assume that? I don't even see why it would be rude, she is asking him for advice on games in the first place which means she knows very little, if he just said, "Hey listen, this console isn't really tailored to your sons likes but this one for cheaper is" I think that would be better then saying get him Killzone 4....
Most stores accept returns, especially on wanted items like that, hell they would probably taje it back after the 30 days just because its a really wanted item.
Just my 2 cents....

I doubt she will return it because i doubt my mother would if she bought it for me :P Then again refunds aren't all that popular here, so i don't know how that works exactly. I personally would think its rude to tell her she should return what she chose to buy for her son, but you are right, she did ask him for his opinion and suggestion.
I still think others should have given him a bit more detailed opinion, i'm not sure howmuch what i wrote will help, since i stopped caring for console gaming 4 years ago, due to having outdated consoles :P

Ahh see my mom would want to know to avoid wasting money basically but I guess everyones different.
But its almost like she is paying more and giving less in this situation(WiiU would mean more and give more enjoyment probably) which is pretty unfortunate.

My mom would probably ask me what i like more, rather than buying and then asking somebody else for advice to begin with, or she would ask somebody in the store
It seems so yea, though PS4 will get many great games in the following months, but it sucks she can't get him some nice games, that he would fully enjoy, right now

Yeah he loves Mario and Platformers, honestly the 2 best platforms for platformers are probably Nintendo and PC. Sadly the PS4 even though it might have a couple gems here and there when it comes to those types of games will never hit the number of good ones the WiiU will have.
She probably wants it to be a surprise, which is why she isn't asking directly I am guessing.

"wii u is mario, zelda, metroid, pokemon and anything more, nintendo is down"
To me, it sounds like you're contradicting yourself. :p
Those are awesome game franchises.
Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Pokemon X/Y are very popular and selling well aren't they?

This is the stupidest thing I read today, thanks.

Lets hope for a Katamari game for PS4 in the near future.

I decided to elaborate a bit on the "keep-and-wait" part:
Probable "yes":
Maybe "no" but still worth trying:

From reviews online, I second Flower. It looks very pretty. Also, Contrast is free with PS+

It's a very addicting side scroller with very simple controls and its free with PS+ (The PS4 comes with a 10 day trial of PS+ so he can try it out). PS+ also has a game called Contrast which he may like (its a platformer that has the main character shifting into and out of shadows)
As for a 2 or 3 game recommendation read below.

Hello!
The mother of a good friend of mine bought a PS4 for Christmas. It's a surprise for my friend, and she wants to buy two or three games too. He isn't a kid -28 years old. The problem is my friend is a Nintendo fan (he loves games like Mario, platforms and this type of games). For this reason I think a PS4 is an awful gift, but I must recommend her some titles. I don't have idea about the PS4 catalogue, but I googled and read about Knack and Lego Marvel Super Heroes. Any other suggestion? Thanks in advance!
