Mainstream rap/hip hop has become about egotistical assholes, rapping about money, bitches, bling etc. That is not what rap/hip hop is really about. That is just the commercial junk

I agree that some rap has better lyrics. However as a musical genre it just sucks.

If you fight for your limitations you get to keep em'; Perhaps it would be a good time to start being more flexible.

Illmatic by Nas is for rap what Bitches Brew by Miles Davis is for jazz

Case in point

I love both of the releases you mention, but if Miles was like Nas he would have never gone past Kind of Blue :)

I like to think how Nas made a tremendous impact with specific album thus creating a new path for others who would follow him, just like Miles Davis did back in 1970. I consider Illmatic one of the defining releases in rap history

Hmm, I don't feel that Nas's flow/lyrics on Illmatic had that much of an impact albeit definitely better than most. Miles completely transformed what Jazz could be (together with other influential musicians).

The production wasn't that different from a lot of other golden age/early 90ies records either, though again clearly some of the tracks are absolute classics (NY State of Mind!). As always the best tracks were produced by Premier and his sound didn't change much from 1990 and up until present day (not complaining about that).

Anyways it was just a friendly remark, I got your point and really didn't want to make a discussion out of it :)

This or this is worth listening, too. (and of course all other tracks from them)

thanks for introducing The Nextmen to me(never heard anything from him), I will take a look on his other tracks.
