Its used many times in puzzles...
you get something in the format of XXXXX and then you can append that to "www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/"and you get the link "www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/XXXXX"

I'm still not sure that I understand what you are looking for, but if you only want to hide the code, then only put the code in the link, like so: [ ] (http://XXXXX) without the space between the two.
If this is not what you want to do, please give me an example from one of the puzzles you mentioned because I don't get it. :p
