I'm looking for something to sink a few hours a week here and there and I've got something in mind. I am hoping to find an MMO with some interesting features. Ideally it won't have a levelling system, or if it does it's completely different from the regular kind of levelling you see in MMORPGs. I'd like if it's F2P and doesn't have microtransactions, or at least the microtransactions don't affect gameplay too much, but if it's something I'd have to buy I'd also look into it.

Any ideas?

I cannot tell you much judging by the type of game you want, but I can tell you this much. Purchased games are always better, plus:

Assassin's Creed Black Flag is surprisingly - if not - the greatest game I've ever played.

Mechwarrior Online, not exactly mmo but close enough otherwise. Just join a unit ( guild ) to really appreciate it.

SWTOR.
You can join PvP at any level you want, all characters are balanced (stats-items) in PvP arenas, only difference is skills they have.
You can play F2P, subscription effects the game but not that much. Buying at least one time subscription also increases your status forever to preferred (better than F2P, and I think it is enough)
You can always have companions with you (all classes have 6 different companions with different roles, you can even marry them ^^)
Story is different for all class types and very good. You can play all different classes (there may be a F2P limit here, 2 chars for each acc) and finish(?) the story. (? -> It gets updated constantly)
There are space missions you can do with your space ship, different gameplay.
Some fun PvP games like Huttball :)

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask :)

From your description, it sounds like you're describing Guild Wars 2 and/or The Secret World, but those games aren't for everyone. I'd recommend watching a few videos on YouTube (like this one or this one, here) before you spend your money.

Anarchy Online, you can start as free players... Bit slow leveling, but the skill/equipment system is one of the best ingames... Lot and lot of grinding... ;D

Path of Exile, though it is more an MMO/ARPG. Think diablo 2/3 that is truly free to play. The micro-transactions are not pushed and are only cosmetic.
