No, you could use a PS3 and a PS2 controller too. Dunno about other controllers.

There's no answer to your question that would be valid for all games.

Most games support the XBOX controller, your controller may or may not be supported by game X, but may be supported by game Y.

For some games you may have to manually fiddle with some config files.

Depends on the game but normally all controllers should work you will just need to configure the buttons. With stuff like MotionJoy you can even use PlayStation controllers. Personally I use PS3 Controller for many games.

i want to play portal 2(and more games) with friend on one pc (splitscreen), and when i choose co-op it says "press X to play offline splitscreen" or something like that, and it don't work with my controller ( my controller looks like ps2 or ps3 controller)

Download the Xbox 360 controller emulator, then you can play games with normal controller even if the game requires a X360 controller.

You might as well get a wired Xbox 360 controller. Works for all controller-required games.

PS style controllers aren't the best for Steam games. The Xbox 360 one works better. And no you can't do everything with yours without extra software.

the 360 controller would probs be best. At the moment, im using my Logitech 310 Gamepad for some PC games, and its really good.

The only steam game I've used it on is Darksiders 2. Works fairy good on there, except the camera, but I;m sure thats the games side, not the controllers side.

Actually, it's the controller. The game's designed to work with the Xbox 360 one, not the PS style one.

Steam is irrelevant when it comes to what games work with controllers, for example, as mentioned above, Darksiders 2 will work with a 360 controller regardless if its Steam version or a retail version

360 controller is the best option out there because it is compatible with the most games. It's also higher quality than a lot of other brand controllers on the market. The only other controllers I prefer over the 360 on PC is either a PS3 controller or Logitech dual shock, but there are a lot of games where I had to employ some sort of workaround to get them to work which I just got tired of doing.

Logitech F310/F510/F710 is probably the most compatible one. It has box Xinput and Directinput modes so it should be compatible with every games, whether new or old.
