Also if it doesn't work for other games try using something like joytojey or motion joy or stuff that emulates a XBOX gamepad or a keyboard.

Use x360ce on Google Code if you already have a controller.

This!
This is what I use with my goody (but cheap) usb controller pad. Works like a charm
EXCEPT you won't get vibration, rumble or however you guys name it. x360ce (or any other emu for the matter) does not YET support this or I have never ever figure it out how to make it work.
Enjoy--I mean profit :P

It may be less the program not supporting it and more your controller probably just doesn't have the hardware inside of it to vibrate or rumble.

Believe me when I say it does have the hardware in it. I've open the pad, I've also felt it working in the past, so I know it's there and I know it works. Googled it and showed up people having the exact same issue, yet no solution arrived. Not sure they care to fix it, assuming it was possible.

you mean THIS?
Yep, it's in there.

I'm using a generic USB controller and can get vibration/rumble working with x360ce
Check your gamepad driver control panel, if the driver supports force feedback/vibration they should have a panel to configure and test it out.

Turns out you were right; it should say "USB vibration joystick" or something like that, unfortunately I find now way of forcing windows 7 x64 to use the driver I've installed, which supports vibration. I'm so pist now!
Why on earth won't let me use it? I'm fighting this thing since today after I posted here...
Didn't pretend to hijack OP thread, and now this is a matter of honnor Windows 7 drivers and ME :P
There's YT videos that describe how it should work, but somehow it isn't. Anyone can help?
Yeah, not even tom's hardware site could figure this out.. lameee!
videoclicky -> didn't downloaded this as it's marked as virus

Here's the driver I'm using linky
No virus in there, tested with my ESET NOD32 AV

Last time I tested it's working on Win 7 x64. I'm using Win 8 x64 now and the driver is working as well, but with a little workaround.

Thank you, really! but windows says I already have this installed (as well). Still no go.
Must be a way to force it to use OTHER drivers.
If here those x360 original pads weren't so darn expensive I'd buy one and forget about this whole fraking* deal! Guess I just take the fall, oh cheap manufacturers, you've won again...

This! If you use 64bit OS and couldn't make it work, use 32bit version of x360ce instead.

Yes, I'm using win7 x64... and no, I don't think there's forcefeedback support on control panel. :S
Tried alot of drivers but neither of them worked. The site (if you can call it a site, it's more of an outdated list of products which lattest drivers available were for x98 and MAYBE xp..

I'm SOL but thanks a bunch guys, you rock :)

Depends, are there any games that you want that has controller support?

Comment has been collapsed.

Exactly, I didn't buy my controller until I got DarkSouls and I don't regret it
(the only thing I regret is getting it so late - passed DMC 4 on a keyboard)

the gaming experience is way better in some games that were meant
for a controller not a keyboard+mouse. So if you have few games for a controller
or plan to get more of them I strongly recommend getting one.

Yes I would say it is. You have to check on the side bar on the games store page to see if it is controller supported. But the controller is mostly used for hack and slash games like DMC. It also helps with games designed specifically for consoles and has a terrible port

So far for me, yes. Helped me with Rogue Legacy, Spelunky, and Dark Souls.

Same here, have the F710 - IMHO it's got a better DPAD, and I like how you can switch the DPAD and left stick on the fly.

In your case it might be a better idea to get a Logitech F510 if you're ok with that sort of style. It can do both DInput (the old controller method) and XInput (the new controller method from the 360 controller) so it should work with any and all games you have. Unlike the 360 controller which is more for games of the last 5 or so years and won't quite work with everything, especially older stuff, as a result).

If money was less of an issue and the XOne controller wasn't coming in 2014 I'd say go right ahead, but thanks to those two things I think the F510 would be a better fit.

I'd actually recommend the F310 instead of the F510 only because it's cheaper and without rumble and very few PC games support rumble these days.

most every game that defaults a 360 controller supports rumble. I have yet to find a game with 360 support that doesn't support rumble.

I find rumble fairly pointless, and hardly even notice when it is missing.

There is also the (admittedly rare) annoyance where you find a game that uses rumble, doesn't have an option to turn it off, but you prefer to play that game with keyboard and mouse. If you don't unplug your controller, it will keep rumbling on your desk while you play.

I've been caught out and made to jump plenty of times by playing Dark Souls with my controller, and then later loading up CSGO when I havent unplugged my pad. I get shot and this almighty clattering starts to my right as my controller starts smashing itself against on top of my PC tower.

Xbox controller is pretty much an unspoken requirement for some games. Like in gta for example, flying the helicopter at the end of the game is straight up impossible with keyboard and mouse unless you have a minimum of 3 hands.

Official Xbox 360 controller:

  • Plug & play
  • No need to use JoyToKey
  • Probably some of your friends have one so you can play at their homes without bring your own
  • No need to manually configure controls
  • Do no risk your money on an unofficial gamepad. If you tried the official one you know it's ergonomic and comfy
  • supports vibration

i have an unoffical gamepad, its one of those seethrough glow ones. Works fine, Same shape/size as my wireless xbox controller, feels smaller in hand even though it is not (which is a plus for me, even if its psycosematic) I dont have to use joytokey or xpadder (unless a game does not support a controller) Plus it flashes rapidly when it vibrates. Who wouldnt want that!

I would say yes. I have one, use it for a fair amount of games. ( not all of course )

Also.. if you have a 360, it would allow you to use it for that as well of course. If you get the wired one like I did.. then well, you wont have to bother with batteries either.

Yes wired xbox360 controller works great on most of the pc games that take it plus if you have a 360 it doubles for that console too plus cheaper than the silly wireless ones.

I had an official Xbox 360 wired controller years ago and it worked well on PC games, especially GTA 4. Had to get a new one after a while. The Madcatz controller I currently use for PC games also works good except the right trigger doesn't work anymore so I only use it on simple games that require less buttons (Super Meat Boy, Castle Crashers, etc.) Both are pretty good controllers, except Madcatz' start/back buttons are above the Guide button so it's out of the way sometimes.

I've been using x360ce with an old Nyko controller for years now. Works great with most everything. Occasionally I wonder if I should try something else that might have a better stick, but I can't justify the cost of a new controller versus $0 for just continuing to use the one that probably works just as well with a 1-2 minute one-time-per-game setup.

Edit: [redacted] There's a game incompatibility on the x360ce wiki that I thought was erroneous, but my controller just works with that game without needing x360ce in the first place.

It works on Valve games, you just have to activate them using the console. I've played 1000 hours of TF2 on my gamepad.
