Private giveaways have been around for a while, at least since I joined up I believe.

what are they? why are they private?

Because they are for people that the person doing the giveaway want to win, not random dinks.

then why not gift them directly? this seems convoluted to me. but whatever floats their boat.

Because it's a giveaway done to a group of people you like and know, a more select group than just an entire site... What's hard to get?

They are private because the gift giver wants to limit the giveaway to a specific group. They have been around for a while. If you look around the forums, you'll find a few private giveaways hidden away in comments.

Account age doesn't really have anything to do with it, but what if they wanted to use something besides random.org to run a giveaway? Something that can prevent negative feelings that the person who ran the giveaway has a favorite, but at the same time they do not want everyone outside of their group of friends from joining it?

I thought he meant the accounts had been on here for a while. I misread it.

Lets say I have five friends that want my copy of "SUPER AWESOME GAME, PART VI". I can do random.org and determine that my friend "WINNER DUDE" is a winner, but then the others might think that I favor WINNER DUDE. If I use this site to give the game out, then they don't think I am biased and won't be mad that they didn't win "SUPER AWESOME GAME, PART VI".

... I didn't win SUPER AWESOME GAME, PART VI." This makes me skeptical.

For all intents and purposes, though, the idea is that you can have a multitude of friends on Steamgifts and provide a raffle-like giveaway for them only. It's a useful feature for those who would like to provide a giveaway for select users. <--- Comment directed at OP and those who are curious about private giveaways.

And it's worth noting that private giveaways do not generate any points, so don't worry about that.

I'm wondering though, does entering a private giveaway subtract points?

Shouldn't really feel left out just because you might not be invited to a private giveaway. If you don't have many games I'd invite you to one of my private giveaways ^_^

SteamGifts can be good if you have clanmates or friends also on and you can host a giveaway for your circle of friends.

i dont think this site should have private give aways... its suppose to be here for everyone to enjoy, not let your buddies win!!!

i definitely don't understand private giveaways but i don't really have "internet friends" so, whatever.

If this site didn't have private giveaways, these people will just find some other way to give away their games privately. They won't suddenly make these giveaways public. It's simply a convenience.

yeah here's an idea, send your friend the gift

In a private giveaway, you can invite your friends and not have one of them get butthurt because you didn't give them the game, because it's a random draw here.

maybe it would help to think of it more as a tool the site is offering to people instead of a giveaway that you can't enter. it doesn't detract from the normal giveaways in any way, and there really aren't many private giveaways at all.

Exactly. Private giveaways don't affect your experience with SteamGifts in any way. I personally don't even use them, or have taken part in them, but I'm not bothered by them either.

And, as skzorak already pointed out above, it's different from just sending a game to a friend. You can include an entire group of friends, and not make it seem like you favor just one of them.

If people are feeling left out about theses private giveaways then tough but at least have the sense to save face. If you really REALLY feel left out then stop whining and ask to be in it. Not a hard thing to do here in this awesome community

True. I think it would be nice if they just mentioned it here in the forum.
