To be fair, it was likely a little more than just "a few rude comments" or "uploaded a copyrighted video".

To have your entire account shutdown you would have to do something drastic. Like, trying to upload hundreds of movies or engaging in some serious hate speech/harassment.

Google does not automatically ban the Gmail account linked to the Youtube account, unless you did something beyond uploading copyrighted videos that warranted the site-wide ban. If you really don't know what you did, contact Google support to find out.
