The steamapps folder never contains save game files, does it? I'm replacing my HDD and I don't want to copy unnecessary stuff.

FEAR 3 saves all online/offline data in the steam apps folder.
/Steam/userdata/36023981/21100/local folder where it is saved.
It does NOT save it to cloud.

It can, mostly with older games it seems. For example, that's where my saves for the original Deus Ex and several of the Prince of Persia games are located.

For some games it DOES contain save games.
For example - Alter Ego, Age of Empires 2 HD, Aquaria. For rest games usually in "My Documents".
But I guess they are all being synced with Steam Cloud, so no worries.

It depends entirely on the game and OS.. but I do believe that some games are saved in steamapps.

Configurations and settings are common in steamapps, but I can't say I can think of any game saves in there. The only time would be if the game has Cloud saving, but then it's not really in steamapps in the first place.

As Infernotoni said, the majority of them will be My Documents or appdata. It'd be best to look up the location for the games you do not want to lose because there are some pretty random places sometime.

Ok, thanks for very prompt answers :) Of course I already copied appdata, my documents and userdata. BTW some games (especially older ones) don't have Steam Cloud. I will just make sure I have the most important saves and take the risk of not copying steamapps.

Like everyone said, the older the game, the higher chance it's keeping saves in the same directory as the program. Since Vista and the UAC nag stuff we're not supposed to be putting game saves in those directories, but it's taken several years for everyone to make the change. You might want to take a quick look, in case you've got some 100 hour save hiding in there... Good luck! :)

Some kind of advice tho, these folders are priority if you are moving your Steam to new system:

  • Steamapps (this folder contains your games data, of course.)
  • userdata (this folder contains your Steam categories config, screenshots, workshop data, and some games store your saves and configs in this folder too.)
  • Skins (if you are using Steam skins)
