Bioshock has a great atmosphere without the anxiety of not being able to fight back like in Amnesia or Outlast.

Haha I'm pretty bad with horror too but I still loved it! Never expect there to be nothing behind you when you turn around :D

I love games where I bring horror to my enemies like in warband. My heat is much safer that way ;)

+1. It's gave me that slight horror feeling, but at least i got a tommy gun to shoot back. Great choice

Probably gonna try Outlast since it appears to be the most popular on Steam. Probably going to have to buy a new pair of pants at the end of this though D:.
Comment has been collapsed.
If I were you, I wouldn't start right away with Outlast. I mean it's your decision after all but I think that if you've never played a horror game or if you are not too keen on playing horror games, you should try something else out first. I don't know what exactly, though.
I'm just telling you that in my opinion Outlast is a fucking bitch of a game - even of a horror game. (Yet again, that's just my personal opinion. Might be different for you after all)
Edit: What about Five Nights at Freddy's? Personally I find those games not too scary, maybe that's something to start with?
Comment has been collapsed.
I love horror games, I do get scared an all but Outlast and Amnesia are so damn terrifying because you CAN'T fight back. I did finish Outlast on PS4 in about 3 sittings, but I spaced each of those with a month in between since playing it was quite stressful.
I hated 5 Nights at Freddy since I found it so damn boring... I could recommend you Dying Light, Dead Space, Metro Redux or Resident Evil games (1-5) since they are more Action-Horror games, you have limited resources but can un down those freaky monsters!
Comment has been collapsed.
I definitely recommend Outlast, but be warned; both the content and the atmosphere are pretty extreme, even for a horror game. There's a constant, uncomfortable tension because you can't really fight back and there are scenes containing sexual violence, dismemberment, heavily disfigured people, etc.
As for something that isn't quite as extreme and is possibly more suited as an introduction to horror games, I'd recommend the Resident Evil HD Remaster. It's still creepy and tense, though, despite having a pretty relaxed pacing compared to Outlast.

I honestly can't remember the last time I watched a scary film ....
Comment has been collapsed.
I watch scary movies with my ears covered most of the time xD That's why scary games are hard for me to do since I can't just sit back, ears covered and wait for it to happen. With games I have to move my character myself, which leaves me unable to cover ears (and eyes for that matter :p)

Someone should conduct a study on the correlation of intelligence and appeal of the horror genre in general.
I somehow assume the "lower the measured IQ/EQ" the rather peeps tend to like the horror genre as a whole.
Why - one reason: The Horror is fictional - games and movies make use of the dumbest decisions/plots/ideas/music to enforce horror.
Being able to to perceive such patterns and repetition ... might just piss one off for good.
In simple words: i guess dumb frucks are all over that garbage, which explains the silly zombie-trash-flood and similar ones - i
might be no exception, neither you (which explains why were here lol).
_
I did like only a few Resident Evil titles back in the day, RES1/2-PS1 / Code Veronica-DC / RES4-GC - no recent ones.
Would recommend the remastered RES1 for starters.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't believe there's any correlation between low intelligence and enjoying horror fiction, specifically, as opposed to other kinds of fiction. Not all horror fiction has a silly plot to it, and even if that was the case, the plot is not what scares people and it's usually not the reason people enjoy horror fiction, it's the atmosphere. However, you're right in that certain types of intelligence will most likely limit one's ability to suspend disbelief and enjoy fiction, but this would apply to all fiction.

You made a very good point with the variety of fiction games. If i had thought about that i wouldn't have posted it that way :-D
I wouldn't really know, nor would i think my assumptions could even lead to proper theories in order to conduct improper studies.
Comment has been collapsed.
Don't lump all your buzz-word acronyms together. There is a correlation between high IQ and low EQ and vice-versa.

I haven't played that many horror games but the last one was Neverending Nightmares - it's a drawn horror game basically (nothing too similar to reality is what I'm saying), so maybe that's a good game to start with? Also, the story is quite interesting as well. Confusing at first maybe but it does make sense in the end.
Comment has been collapsed.
I know but it's the best I could come up with.
I don't want to spoil anything but let me tell you that yes, even though you react with "what the hell?" at first, it actually has a quite logical explanation as to why stuff is happening the way it is.

Wow, my wishlist is empty right now, but I might consider scribbling the title of this game in my notebook(paper one, I even have a pen!) Seems like it's a short game however. Never mind though, I enjoy short ones, as long as they have interesting plot/mechanics(played Contrast and Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons, short but very good games).
And note to OP: As for a horror game... I never played much of those. I'd suggest something like System Shock 2, Bioshock 1 & 2(not Infinite, too bright/colorful), Thief games : Gold, The Metal Age, even Deadly Shadows(mission in burned down orphanage is scary). Later on you can move to Amnesia/Outlast(I don't find the last game particularly scary, it's more disturbing than anything...).
Comment has been collapsed.
It definitely has an interesting plot, yet I also have to admit that it's not much of a "game"; well, you walk most of the time. Sometimes you run, and sometimes you hide in closets. That's it, basically. There are three different endings to that game though and I think that that kinda makes up for the fact that you literally just walk the entire game.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, three completely different endings. Well, it's been 66% off during the Summer Sale.. but it definitely will be on sale again some day :D

I have the remastered version for the ps3 for that game but I've heard that it was poorly done. I should probably give it a go nonetheless though.
Comment has been collapsed.
I can't say for sure either way about the PS3 version. I played the original version on PS2, and loved it so much I also bought it as soon as they put out the XBox version which added a new story where you got to play as Maria. From what I gather that added story should be available on the PS3 version as well.
The game is fantastic, and well worth playing. It has a reputation, well deserved imo, of being the best game of Silent Hill, and one of the best horror games ever.

I would recommend the Clock Tower series. They're classic horror games. :3

I've never experienced a real horror game since i was kid as much as Resident Evil 3.It might be the creepy environment and that nemesis who follows you everywhere you go and you can either run away from him or injure him so that he would stop following you for some time.I haven't seen any game using the same idea except Silent Hill 4:The Room in late stages and since i mentioned Silent Hill 4,it's is also an amazing horror game.Actually,It made me love the series after being a hardcore Resident Evil fanboy. It offers many puzzles and the best thing about this game is the variety of places you'll visit,More over you'll have to concentrate in every place you go as it might offer clues for solving puzzles. For example,During early walk through Silent Hill you'll see a motel advertisement through your room window and in one of the puzzles you'll need the number written in the advertisement to open a locked door. You'll get stuck most of the times and will have to use Wikipedia or Youtube for sure.Outlast is also a good game.I recommend getting it if u're not a fan of classic games since both RE 3 & SH 4 are old games "2003".

When you're new into horror games, I highly suggest playing an older one (with outdated graphics). Because those trigger your imagination and make it a much more interesting experience.
System Shock 2 (and maybe the Bioshock series) are games with a great spooky atomsphere without having any stupid jumpscares or cheap horror elements. Just good story and music.
F.E.A.R. for being a really fun shooter (bullet-time) and having some good light/shadow effects to create an authentic horror ambience.
Comment has been collapsed.
F.E.A.R. wasn't really that scary except the end of it where the shadowy demons were trying to get you.
Comment has been collapsed.
I found it pretty scary at the age I played it.
Mainly because it somehow had revolutionary graphics for that time which opened new ways to make use of lighting/shadows for horror effects.
I found it more scary, than now playing Amnesia & co.
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay, considering the age when playing videogames I have to say I played Resident Evil with a friend when I was.. 6 or 7. At one point he asked if I wanted to play it. I met my first Zombie, didn't know what to do and threw the controller away and just watched him play from then on. When I played the original Resident Evil a year ago I wasn't scared at all. So I know what you mean.

I'm not making this up, but I remember my little sister sleepwalking once. I woke up by the noise of not stopping footsteps in the floor, stood up, opened my room's door, and I saw my sister in a red nightdress walking circles in a quick pace.
I almost died.

hahaha. My gf speak in dreams, and one day she start screaming, saying something like: WHO ARE YOU??? i turned on the light and ask her, she told me that she was dreaming then start to sleep again and i was with the adrenaline at 200% and couldnt sleep....

I found Outlast scarier since you can't defend yourself, just run like a b!tch. D3 was awesome though, and D4 seems to be a non stopping adrenaline rush (back to its roots)

I only remember small bits from playing it but hell, these were good games. I had one moment which I'll never forget, I think it was in the second game.
You were going down a corridor and the way was blocked. You had to go through an appartement which would lead to a door on the other side of the barriier and you'll see a mannequin with its back facing you. You move and hear a noise, when you turn around it is looking at you. You go another step, another noise. You turn around and suddenly two mannequins are standing there. This would go on until you leave the fucking appartement on the other side and its filled with mannequins facing you. I was dying of fear. :D

Unfortunately I can't read spoiler blocks on my mobile. :( So I'll have to read it tomorrow when I'm at my PC.
True game spoilers. Reader beware.
I'm wondering if this is what you mentioned, but the cabin in Condemned 2. Dat bear!! Such a memorable moment in gaming for me and was legitimately so startling as I was playing in the pitch dark in the early am. I want to play it again, now.
Also, welcome to my little blue-heart club, friend. :)

Another spoler you have to read tomorrow :D
I do remember something with a bear, but it's not a clear memory I have but something rings in my head when you said it. Unfortunately the games aren't available in the german steam store, who would've known! They were banned from sales back then and probably still are :(
Really???? Thanks! :DD

Links don't hide in spoiler blocks... click only if you want a spoiler. :(
Ahaha. I finally got to read your comments above. The mannequins. Yes! That was a scene from the first game - Condemned: Criminal Origins. I remember shooting every one of those things repeatedly to no avail. Relive it if you wish. :)
That's a bummer it's not available for purchase in Germany. I'm guessing it could be activated there, though?
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know. Some games are just not available and can be gifted, some are region blocked and can't be activated nor played. Meaning it would take some measures that would be a reason for a ban, which is ridiculous. On the 360 for example I just bought everything in Austria or the UK when I wanted some indexed game and Steam blows it obviously.
I just watched the scene and can't remember it so I immediteatly did some research and this is the exact scene, in the second game tho. Commentary might be a little annoying but I reacted the same way. :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Also, another spoiler where the link can't be hidden.
This is the bear scene. Now granted this player knows the route to take and the hiding places so it's not fair, but playing this at around 2-3 AM with no lights on and no idea where I'm going or what's coming - this was legitimately terrifying. :D Link
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh yeah, I remember this one vaguely. So sad that this game isn't really well-known because those were some really good games! Or maybe it's just unknown in Germany because it's indexed.

I think you could start off with Dead Space. The first game of the trilogy. It is survival horror at its best. The genre became rare these days.
It feels just like the good ol' 90s games like Resident Evil. Dead Space isn't that frightening which makes it a great start if you prefer it slow rather than being tossed into the cold water. It also has a lot of elements rather than just relying on one alone. Jumpscares, psychological horror from time to time, darkness etc.
Games like Outlast and Amnesia that were mentioned before are somewhat pure torture because you are just running away and can't defend yourself. If you're into this I would suggest to play Damned with friends. One guy plays the monster and 4 other guys play survivors that need to escape. You can just run and hide but not attack. It's fun because you are playing with friends, but even than I had fucking panic attacks. :D
Also a good recommendation would be the original Resident Evil 1. Not the Remake. The original. The old graphics make it way easier to play, although when I was a brat it was damn scary. It relies more on jumpscares than atmospheric horror.
The original Silent Hill on the other hand... Phew... Psychological horror. I played until I reached the hospital which was dark with small children coming for you and I just deinstalled the game. :D
There is so much to talk about... And I don't think you read this wall of text, but yeah, go for some of the suggestions in the thread. Good stuff.

How far did you get? And what exactly did you think was boring?
I personally loved it and played it 2 or 3 times and also tried to complete it on hard mode and I usually never look for a challenge in video games. This was just because I loved the game so much. :)

That's a good idea! But maybe you just don't like it after all and that's okay. :)

+1 - Dead Space series is among my favorite also and I think I have +Newgame x9 or something in dead space 2.

Games from the times where things used to be good! I still need to catch up on most Silent Hill and Resident Evil games tho because back then I only watched my cosuin play and an't remember most of it. I only know that these were damn good games and I need to play them all!
Comment has been collapsed.
I played Homecoming. I am not an expert about Silent Hill since I only barely played them (1 and 2) but they did go back to the roots. The story was good, the gameplay reminded me of the first game although the combat system was new and unique in a way. Takes some time to get used to it. But overall a good game! Definitely needs a replay some time since I never found all the weapons :V

Alright, played Dammed and got killed within the first few minutes while having a mini heart attack. A great start -.-.

I told you! Play with friends! I haven't played in a while but I could use some Damned. Do you have a headset? Best we'd find 3 more ppl if you want to play.

From my personal experience:
Bioshock has a great spooky atmosphere and overall 10/10 game, I suggest you play this if you haven't already
Amnesia (the first one) is so scary because someone is pretty much always chasing you
I haven't played Outlast but people have told me it's scary as hell
Comment has been collapsed.
Why does everyone mention Bioshock? It has a dark atmosphere but I wouldn't say that it tries to scare the shit out of you.
But definitely a good game for startes, I guess, and of course 11/10 so everyone should've played it at some point.

Do you remember the exact moment when you pickup the shotgun? Yes, all is bright and full of light, but after you pick it up, everything becomes dark and start hearing splincers screaming and... scary moment... they jump over you!

Despite liking horror movies, I have never played any.

You could start off with more action-oriented "horror" games such as Resident Evil 4, Metro games, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, etc. and then work your way towards the pant-filling stuff where you more often resort to running away/hiding.
Also, thanks for the GA, but I seem to be on your naughty list for whatever reason. No worries though, we all have our reasons.

Now, as you can tell from the title, I am not fond of 'horror' anything. Be they movie/games/etc. I tend to shy away because ... well ... I'm a chicken XD. But I want to change that! So I have come to you fellow peeps for guidance.
Which horror games would you suggest to someone who never played one before?
Oh and random giveaway because ....
