Well some say the devils number was 616. Once you give meaning to anything be it a word or number combination ironically it can take on a meaning it shouldn't have so as people have constantly gone on about 666 its reason enough to cause negative emotion in some so in some sense it has become an evil number combination to summon forth bad emotions and evilness.

No you're not screwed, cause the number 666 only works if a person's name is "translated" to a number for each alphabet in his name according to their position from 1-26 and the sum of them added up is 666.

This has NOTHING to do with the devil!!

Funny how people who are atheistic out there would put ANY value or meaning to a prophecy from the last book of the bible. Not saying any of you guys are atheistic, but i mean... in general. If you accept 666 as the # of the beast or the devil you are giving credence to the bible basically.

Personally, it's a just a #, it's a symbol... no big deal... get over it.

Long post. Skip if you do not like reading.

Yes, there are biblical references to 666 being of the 'beast'. but not specifically the devil. it is associated with it thought.

In simpler terms, 6 is the number of days assigned to man to work to be able to survive. Thus the seventh day was suppose to be a day of rest and reflection to center ones' life around God and know that we are not capable of doing everything in our own strength.

Biblically, the mark is on a persons head, hands and heart. In simpler terms this is all they think about, care about and do. Loosely translated a person marked by this outwardly or in their behavior is someone who cares only about money and is seen as a greedy person.

The next step is examining ones own life to consider if that is all you care about. if you do, than you need to start caring for your neighbor (ala the golden rule) and look for ways to improve your life and spiritual condition.

In no place in the Bible it's mentioned that the Beast is some dude. It is described as "coming out of the sea" with 10 horns, seven heads, 10 crowns and other body parts that do not even resemble a human body accidentally.

Revelation 13:1 "And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy."

Now tell me that that's a man's description.

P.S. You misunderstand the verse you quoted.

YOU misunderstood the verses.
Verse 1-10 describes a leopard beast with multiple heads and also a dragon that gave it power.
Verses 11-17 describe a 2nd beast that makes people worship the 1st and to get a mark on their hand or forehead to buy / sell goods.

Verse 18 reveals that to those who have Wisdom let him understand, the # of the beast 666 is the number of a man.

BUT it does say that it is those with Wisdom that will understand! so apparently, most people won't. ;)

It actually just states that people can realize the Beast because it's number translates into arabic number 666. Nothing here says that this number is carved on some dude's forehead.

666 isn't the devil's number, rather it's a symbol of the "Mark of the Beast"...
(Greek: Ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, Arithmos tou Thēriou)

Hebrew has the numeric value of 666, whereas his Latin name written into Hebrew is 616.

In the Greek manuscripts, the number is rendered in Greek numerical form as χ ξ ϛ, or sometimes literally as ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ, hexakósioi hexēkonta héx, "six hundred and sixty-six".
