Heard of it, never played it. Article popped up on my phone. Thought might be worth sharing.
"Co-op RTS Dwarfheim is going offline, and the singleplayer mode can't be saved because nobody has the source code"

Hope this link is okay, let me know if not please. Also wasn't sure to post this in general or elsewhere.

Single player content in an indie game not playable unless having an internet connection. Totally logical.

What's crazy is this isn't even the first indie game to do this: Blast Zone Tournament also won't let you play a single-player game offline...and its servers are also shut down.

Wow, and they're still selling that shit, now that's actually criminal.

Member the times when games came with their own server software and "servers going offline" wasn't such a big deal?

Yup.. Ark offical servers went offline recently due to the new version, luckily it has other servers because of that. Becoming increasingly rare/nonexistent. Especially with anything crossplatform, or even just not on pc.
City of Heroes/City of Villains closed, and it took years and years, about a decade, for fans to make a working version. Was hard and long and lots missing they had to redo, but, was still possible. Feels like even that much effort wouldn't be enough to keep most of the modern games with servers working. So much is cloud/server based now it can be hard just to connect to a private server.

Was about to post something similar... in the past, you could just be your own server when setting up a multiplayer, or setup one on another machine, or even rent one (with full admin command).

Yup. my first was a doom 1, OG, server. dialup in the 90s. Somehow with 1 phone line I could have other people call and connect an play. I literally can't remember how I did any of it. Some software and setup would once answered move to a slot and line would open up for another call to connect. Did the same for doom 2. Pretty sure in doom 2 I somehow had more than 4 players. Also not sure how my modem and/or pc didn't melt/crash..
Unreal - various editions up to ut2004.. any game with a separate or dedicated server launch option. Or even games you can have admin and just open to lan/net, like minecraft
Rented a few servers for my muds long ago too..

"because nobody has the source code" Whats with companies and devs losing the source code all the time. tf? How big can this project be like, 500mb of source code at most? I think what they meant is, it wouldn't generate us money afterwards so we're not going to go through the effort of using one of our devs to make it work.

The other thing I find stupid is that they actually made it this way in the first place. You don't make singleplayer games online only, the only reason anyone would do this is to be toxic, and it leads to stuff like this.

Exactly. They just don't want to give it out. If lucky some dev leaks it after game is dead for community to use.
Also, exactly. The ps5 w/o a HD that's only online, wtf. Not even a disc drive.

"Studio who can't keep their servers online for two years put their single-player mode on those servers - more after 8"

edit: it's after 8. Most of the achievements are super heavy grind-reliant. I'm unsure if this is trolling or just super bad design

Win 1000 Conquest matches
Heal 1.000.000 health with the Brewmaster and the Alehouse during Conquest matches
Forge 1.000.000 Gold during Conquest matches
Kill 100.000 Trolls during Conquest matches as the Warrior class
Win a Conquest match against a Developer

Wow. Win against a dev as an actual achievement.

A few game has achievements like that, but from like 10 years ago. Achievements like these, and the length of some suggests how different they planned their game's longevity. You couldn't even get the 1000 wins achievement if you played and won a game every day from its release to it being defunct. And apparently 0 patches? I hope the workers can find some other job, as the studio went bankrupt. It's a pity as the game looks nice, but seems like it was doomed for a long while.

I mean, there's the valve class action lawsuit, but that doesn't cover everything still..

You purchased a license. I see nothing wrong here.

Forcing them to write a lengthy lawyer speak, won't make it better.

And if the devs make the game unplayable, how is this Steam's fault? All they can do is stop selling it. Steam's job is only to sell/distribute the game, not maintain it.
