Im planning to buy a controller, mostly for dark souls and platformers. I cant decide which to buy so i come here ask for advice! so advise!

Im curently diciding between the xbox 360 and the ps4. I like the PS4 more, but im sceptical with the DS4PC software which is required to be used with PC

Thanks for all the info and help :)

None of the above. I love my Logitech F310. But if you want a similar, I guess the PS3/4 will do assuming you can get it working.

Apparently, M$ pays companies off to ONLY support natively their crap 360 pads.

What problems do you have with 360 controller?

It's bulky, clunky, not very responsive, has a nasty tendency to disconnect when you don't want it to (my friend has this happen a LOT with his 360 pad) and most importantly, HIGHLY uncomfortable to hold.

I have F310 too but it's on its default setting and I kinda feel like analog sensitivity is low when I make small movements with it. Does it only feel for me like that and should I download the software and then re-calibrate?

Xbox 360 controller just works. No fiddling required. I don't know if the same's true for the Xbox One controller.

Xbox controller is natively supported by windows, most games with controller support have xbox controller for their configuration.
So my vote goes for xbox controller.

yeah... thats the reason i like it the most, but when i saw that you can map ps4 to emulate the mouse via touchpad, i felt like i need it :D

Hi!
There is also software that emulates the 360 joystick as mouse. I used a free software called JoyToKey. There is also other software available for it, also on steam (not free) but I can't think of the name. It feels a bit weird to control your mouse with a stick though and I never actually use it.
I hope that helps your decision.

I have my gaming machine set up to use something like that. The analog stick works fine as a mouse and there's a pop-up keyboard for other input. Wish I could remember the name.

Controller Companion is the software on steam. It works great but i used JoyToKey as well and it is a great free alernative. Another paid one is Xpadder, great as well mostly because of the included premade profiles

Steam Controller has community configurations and has mouse movement and click, as well as other functions, natively in Windows when powered on but not in a game/Big Picture.

I have Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers. I have found that the Xbox One controller works for every game that the Xbox 360 controller works for, but some games don't display the Xbox controller icons properly when you use the Xbox One controller (Burnout Paradise on Origins is an example).

I like the feel of the Xbox One controller a lot better, but the Xbox 360 controller is likely to work for a handful more games than the Xbox One controller. For games with controller support, you can expect the 360 controller to work without adjustment 99% of the time whereas the Xbox One controller may only work 96% of the time. (I just made those stats up, but I think you get my point.)

One more thing for anyone playing on Mac. The Mac driver for the Xbox controller has an option to make the computer treat an Xbox One controller as an Xbox 360 controller, so if you're choosing Xbox as your controller for Mac, definitely go with the better Xbox One controller.

I really don't know much about controllers. Recently I decided to get the wired 360 controller because of the native support, the price and user reviews. I am happy with it. It works fine so far with the steam games that have controller support.
But please note I have no other controllers to compare it with.

Sony launched an official USB dongle for the DS4, so if you wait a little for it to hit the market using a DS4 should get easier.

Well SOny has officially released a bluetooth receiver for the DS4 that can even use the light bar thingie on pc. So I wonder if there is an official driver out there for the DS4 for pc. If so, maybe it would work better now?

I have used both, Xbox 360 and PS4 controllers. Both are good, but if I have to choose one, I would choose a Xbox 360 controller :)

It has better XInput, that is the standar of libraries for gaming devices introduced with the appearance of the Xbox 360. This standard makes it compatible using the same language between Windows and Xbox, thereby facilitating the use of Xbox devices (such as flyers) in Windows. It makes all games that use these libraries to 100% compatible with XInput controls without any configuration buttons. In addition, the Xbox 360 controller for Windows is the best value/price you will find without doubt. But you must also purchase the bluetooth adapter to synchronize the PC and costs about 20€ if we choose the original Microsoft. There are also other brands bluetooth adapters for less money that require manual configuration thereof. However, if you opt for the wired version, you have the drawback of cable. With the Xbox 360 you have guaranteed compatibility with 100% of video games that support controls to play without having to do anything but connect it to your computer. Sorry if I have a bad English :P

I hate to be that guy but I feel that I should point this out. Not all steam games support xinput or are ideal to play with a xinput controller, there's a few that were designed to use direct input. One I can recall of the top of my mind is Ys Origins, I remember I had to play it with my controller on d input for it to work ideally.

I personally prefer how Xbox controllers feel in in my hand, and prefer their analog placement. My only complaint is towards the Xbox 360 D-Pad, I hate that thing, and I prefer using D-Pad for fighting games so...

Xbox one S controller, its bluethoot to you can plug it into other stuff aswell, the 360 one are really solid, great quality on those, but they are not bluethoot and if you are getting a wireless youll need the special adapter, wired is all fine and good. DS4 is good too, bluethoot aswell.

idk i have them all but i always prefer to play with KB+MS. :P

I have Xbone controller and Steam controller, and both are amazing. Easier for me to control and use is the steam controller, but only when I find recommended settings ready and I do not have to fix them myself (specially on games I do not know the buttons or moves or whatever). For the rest I use Xbox One controller (specially for games outside steam).

Also Steam controller is amazing for games that were meant to be played with mouse like strategy games.

I have an assortment of controllers including Wii and PS2. I also have some other Bluetooth controllers. So far, the Xbox360 controller is the only one that seems to work right the first time and every time when playing on the PC.

Get Steam Controller or Logitech F series.

Oh ya but if get console controller, get Xbox.

Doesn't Steam officially recommend Xinput? I thought I read that somewhere. Which would mean XBox or compatible is a better choice than PS. As others said above, I have a Logitech F310 and am very happy with it.

Don't take the XB360 if you go wireless...
There is a small resistance in the dongle that can (and will) burn when you disconnect the dongle without powering down your PC first...
I have lost 2 of em that way...

The XBOne controller doesn't have this problem afaik, and I'm pretty glad I bought it.
I once used the Steam one at a friends, it was pretty cool but needs getting used to... It has the pro that you'll be able to play most strategy games by controller as well though...

Current Logitech gamepad had some analog deadzone users complaint on forums and Newegg.
I own the Older Logitech Gamepad which didn't support x-input. I also had a USB Gravis Gamepad Pro haha.
Now i have both wired and wireless xbox 360 controller.
