Hello, guys and girls! I've been playing MMORPGs since forever, and now I feel the need for a change - I want to try a new one. Out of the whole bunch of MMOs out there right now, these two seem rather interesting and nice to play.

I really want something with a different combat mechanic than the usual, but I really like a good story in my game. So this is why I've come to this pool here. Can I get a suggestion of which should I go with?

Thank you in advance!

Late edit: Do you have any suggestions of games that combine the two aspects?

Which one should I go with?

The Elder Scrolls Online
Black Desert

Nutshell:
Epic Storyline + Questing > Elder Scrolls
Epic Combat + Grinding > Black Desert

Personally, I like Elder Scrolls much MUCH more.
It's lore is awesome and the content, dear god, the amount of content!

Black Desert is epic when you're fighting, the mechanics are truly awesome. But it's just a major grind for equipment, if doing dailies over and over to try improve (upgrade) your equipment with +5 damage is your thing, this is your game.

If you just love questing and do not care about micromanaging stats, then Elder Scrolls is your game, like I said, it has so much questing content, it's insane!
Black Desert's questing is very VERY boring, it's your typical "get 5 carrots, spawn and kill a boss, do a daily, kill 50 of these guys" kind of questing..

Edit: Damnit, now you have me install Elder Scrolls Online again -_- , I think I never truly played Spellcaster, so here we go :D

Thanks for the advice!
Before I start playing any MMO, I look at the forums and see through the community aspect of the game too. And right now the two games are in some really serious issues. ESO has some problems with cheaters that did not get banned, although the devs said that they did. That is a real transparency issue over there. But on the other hand, BDO has some issues with the pay to win aspect of the game and people are angry, like... a lot.
I am still waiting for more votes on the pool, as you can see its 50-50 right now, which is helping me a lot, lol :D.

Psst, I hear that spellcasters are not in a good place in the current patch.

If you're looking for a new and unique experience, maybe give PSO2 a chance? Not much of a community, because Japanese game, but English patches do exist.

I second this. I don't play it much anymore because constant patching and stuff and the group I played with no longer plays, but if you're willing to find people on forums and use the new convenient updater (which came out somewhere between when I first played and when my friends and I no longer played together, assuming it still works) it's a pretty fun game gameplay wise. Might be a bit lacking on the story, imo, but I played before the English story patch, so that could be different now that it would be in a language I speak.

The story is actually really good, it picks up entirely during Episode 2, and we've got translations up to about 10% of EP4. The PSO2Tweaker is still a thing, so it's really easy to get going. I play on Ship04, couldn't really stand the community on Ship02.

I think I'm on Ship 2, so no dice for me. Oh well. I have some stupidly rare/expensive costumes that I grabbed off the market that probably would fetch a killing (I think I have part of the Gilgamesh stuff from the Fate Zero event, not to mention a variety of AC scratch outfits/Cast parts that I grabbed when they were on the scratch and were cheap) but I don't even remember my username/password at this point.

:c

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if your stuff was either worth nothing, or tens of millions. It can really vary, depending on how popular something is, and how often it gets revived. Often though, male stuff like Gilgamesh's has little to no value.

PSO2 does look interesting and I saw that I need PSO2Tweaker, as you mentioned, to get into it. I'll give it a try one of these days.
Thank you for the suggestion!

Of the two, I'd recommend BDO. TESO was really underwhelming to me, because the combat feels lame, but I kind of liked BDO (though I didn't play it a ton, I mean to get back into it some day when I have more time). If you want something that's halfway between traditional MMO combat and action, I'd personally recommend Dungeons and Dragons Online. It's free (well, for low level play, at higher levels you either need to grind to unlock stuff or pay, but even then it's not too bad to unlock stuff if you're discerning) so you can get a feel for it. Unlike most MMOs, experience is granted at the completion of dungeons and objectives within, and the story, if you don't click through dialogues, although sparse, is pretty deep if you're willing to dig into fluff by speaking to NPCs and stuff.

I might be addicted to it, with over 1000 hours on Steam and lots of time off Steam, but details.

Yes, I get you argument. I really like the new gen action combat thing - feel more engaging/immersive than the tab targeting.
About D&D: is cool, played some hours, but the instanced nature of it makes me avoid it a bit. Though maybe I should give it another try someday.

Thanks!

I stump for DDO aggressively as often as I can, because I need to share my addiction, but I understand that many people don't like it; it is very heavily instanced, and that can be a turn off for many people. That said, I don't think it's bad if people don't like it, it's a matter of preference and ultimately you shouldn't have to play a game you don't want to play.

I didn't think of this earlier, but I have a BDO pass (or, actually, a few, I think) if you want to give it a try before you drop money on it.

^ this, there is a pretty big difference, and although i liked Neverwinter honestly all i did in that game was make dungeon runs for other people to play because that was probably the most enjoyable part of that game in my opinion.

If you haven't played GW2 in some time, just login today so you get the first episode of season 3 of the living story added to your account for free. Tomorrow ep 2 launches, so grab that one too tomorrow.

You can try play in the PSO2, it's really nice game, yeah hard to register here, but game really nice and suppor with English patch.
You can also try play in the Tera Online, or Blade and Soul. This games with really nice gameplay and cool graphic!
or you can try PokeMMO (if you like pokemons x3)
or maybe Elsword, nice action game!
if you like shooters, you can try PlanetSide2, really huge map with a lot of players.
i know a lot of nice unusual MMO, but i'm need to know what excatly you looking for!~

Played Tera, but got bored, and my laptop does not support any battlegrounds... I just lag all the way.
I recently got back into Blade and Soul (EU, Spirits Rest), and I am having a blast because of the mechanics, but I have the same feeling as months ago that it will get old fast.

If you're going to play Blade and Soul, check out the Taiwanese servers. It's a lot more fun there, and there's a few good guilds. Content is more up-to-date, and more "official", without all the "tweaking" NCWest did to mechanics.

I haven't tried Black Desert, but I'd pick it over ESO. I'm a huge Bethesda fan but that game should have never been released.
Have you considered other games?
There are a number of legal free alternatives to paid MMO's such as:
The Ultima Online project (I'd recommend Excelsior - www.uoex.net),
The original Everquest (www.PEQ.com)
Both of these projects are legal, because while they use the client software made by corporations, it isn't modified, and the Server software is custom made so as to bypass copyright laws.
UOEX allows the use of custom scripts/mods/trainers that make the game insanely fun, meaning you can do raid mobs solo with the right gear etc.
PEQ allows the use of multiboxing, meaning you can form an entire raid group on your end (I personally run 18 characters at a time sometimes - uses a lot of RAM though I've seen some run up to 40) and the use of a macroing program called MQ2 that automates a lot of your toons for you. Addons like Killians E3 will automate your group/raid members to a degree where you pretty much just play 1 toon and issue orders with a few clicks.
Both are very old school, but have very active playerbases, showing that these games have really stood the test of time.

I am very very late to the party but if you can stand something that looks like it came out when what feels like the majority of SG users these days were in diapers, I'd recommend Neocron It's completely free and plays kind of like if someone tried to turn the original Deus Ex into an MMO

not available on steam, but if you never played Star Wars: The Old Republic its free to play now, game started in 2011 and well, definetly the best single player mmo:-D i mean, there were a lot of other player, pvp grounds are damn good, but the story, oh my god, all classes got pretty good, quests and story, even non mmo fans should play that game only for leveling quests:-)

After that i played GW2, i not liked that, before swtor i played WoW, well, it was just a cartoon type Everquest clone but that wasnt surprise, even developers agreed to that when they created wow. Before that Everquest, i think that was the best mmo i ever played, perhaps not, but i guess allways the first is the best:-D Well, that game still alive even if its soon 20years old, but its hardcore and very hard game if it remained unchanged and even a random trash mob of your level in simple zones cant be killed alone.

I personally dislike most MMos, however The Secret World is my favourite MMO. It is the only one I was able to play for longer sessions and still enjoy it. I wouldn't recommend getting the Steam version, because on the official page you can get the complete edition which contains all issues (DLCs) ever released. I like TSW because although it has grindy and common quests you will need to use your brain in a lot of quests to uncover a password or the location you have to go to.

I play Neverwinter. Small and simple MMORPG. I just miss an open world.
In the past I played Anarchy Online, WoW and Rift. Could try another MMORPG so I'm reading this thread.
How is Rift these days? I have no idea about the ESO, FSO or that Black Desert.

OHHH NOOO this guy have the premium outfit that hide him!!!!! you walk near him (you die)
yaiii after 50 hours of farm for my new level up!!! i go to piss ohhh fuck a simple monster killed me and i lost 10% of my level!!! (but that's 100 hours of farm monsters!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!) don't worry!!! kill more monsters!!!!!!!
nice another day, today i'm going to..... yes!!!! you know it!!! kill more monsters!!!!!!!

so skip black desert don't waste your money here. buy it if you like to move in circles during hours killing the same 10 monster spawns during days/hours/weeks/months......... ohh but remember there will be another players that want do the same than you!!! i don't like both games but between both elder scrolls it's byyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy farrrrrrrrrrrrrr farrrrrrrrrrrrrr farrrrrrrrrrrrrrr the best.

Dungeons & Dragons Online (not Neverwinter) has an enjoyable and a lot less "exagerated" combat mechanic. It has bits of story in every quest that are nice to keep up with, but they are more modular and the world itself doesn't have a main storyline.

Still the greatest dungeon experience out there, though, if it doesn't feel too clunky for you.
