So I'm probably gonna get a Play Station soon, and I was wondering what games you guys think are good ones. The ones I can think of are-

  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Crash Bandicoot

I don't like Stealth games, so no Metal Gear Solid. Maybe some good RPG's besides FFVII? I don't know much about the games on the PS. And aren't there some good sports games on it? Just looking for really anything. Thanks!

Also, I'd appreciate the genre of the game and maybe a little description of it if possible

Get a PS2, and play both good Playstation games and PS2 games.

I can heavily recommend the original Spyro trilogy and most of the original Crash games, but all the rest I can think of are PS2.

I mean, you could get the original Tomb Raider series, but you could get those for much cheaper on the Steam store during a sale.

No, this Play Station is free, I just need to actually get it from the relative who owns it.

And yeah, wish I could play PS2 games. Silent Hill 3, definitely

You're going to miss out on a lot, then. Jak and Daxter and Kingdom Hearts, for some examples.

-Shrugs- It's free. I don't care enough about the Play Station consoles to go out and buy a PS2. Besides, I might eventually get a PS3 in a few years so I can play some Console exclusives.

Whatever floats your boat. I stopped being a console gamer around a year ago, but I still launch up my PS2 to play some games every once in a while.

Do PS3s even have backwards compatability?

Well I kinda have to be both a console gamer and PC gamer, since my computer can't do everything. I have a few consoles, but I don't play them a whole lot.

I don't know if it does or not

Yup. The PS1 games that I've played have no issues on the PS3. Much better than emulating it on a PC.

Not perfectly.
(Some?) PlayStation 1 games on a PS2 have problems, and I wouldn't recommend it.

I personally never had any problems

Must be certain games.
Most/all of the games I owned had some issues Xenogears and Legend of Dragoon come to mind.
I own 3-4 PS2s tried them and every single one had the same results, and other people experience the problems.
Getting a PS2 to play PS1 games is not recommended.

Even the lowest end PCs these days would be able to emulate PS games pretty well. Hell, I remember playing stuff like Tekken and FFVII almost 10 years ago on emulators, and they ran smoothly. Also bypassed stupid issues with regions and stuff (not that that is difficult on the PS).
Of course, free is free :D

Wow, can't believe you said the E-Word. Anyways...

I don't like to emulate or pirate, and this console is free anyways.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not piracy if you put your PS1 discs into your PC. I do that all of the time. Still, emulation really makes some games lose some of their quality.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I did the exact same thing. Hell, after a point, I wouldn't even use my PSX or PSone (Yes, I have both), to play unless I had friends over. Save management was a pain though...

I'd disagree about quality, however. With hardware rendering, I'd say game quality improved significantly. I know they did for my PS2 games as well.

Side note: There's nothing actually explicitly illegal about emulation itself. The process by which many use to do so, however, is (i.e.: The obtaining of [intentionally redacted] online, downloading ROMs or ISOs - as opposed to ripping your own or using your own disc, etc.) very much illegal.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nothing illegal or wrong with emulating. It isn't pirating. I got the games CDs I played (I admit, I didn't buy them, they were gifted to me), and I simply put the CDs in the computer. And yeah, I had forgotten about save states as well! Might be considered cheating, but a lot of games I'd never have completed without them :D.

The box art for Spyro in japan looks like it says Ripto, even on the first one. Im pretty sure thats what the word spyro looks like in Japanese. Insomniac liked the name so much that they titled the sequel, and its boss, as Ripto.

It's surprising how many games have different names in different English regions (usually NA/EU, but sometimes we get different titles in AU/NZ than the EU has.)

From my list:

  • Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer (Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage - as mentioned)
  • Sheep, Dog, 'n Wolf (Sheep Raider)
  • Speed Freaks (Speed Punks)
  • Wip3out (Wipeout 3)
  • Bust-A-Move 3 DX (Bust-A-Move '99 - I think this is the equivalent: 3 DX isn't the regular BAM3, and it seems to be PAL-only)
  • Twisted Metal 2: World Tour (Twisted Metal 2)

Some had different Japanese names too (eg: Gun Bullet 2, Puzzle Bobble 3)
