So here's the precursor story to my plea for help.

So I've played about 10 hours of Mass Effect 1 when real life distracted me and I drop the game. Later, I get into a whole lot of new games (Bioshock infinite, etc) that requires me to update my graphics drivers and service pack (I run vista, it's an old computer) - and I do that....those games play fine.

But now a few months later I come back to ME1 and try to play it, nothing happens for like a minute, then steam says game crashed can't load or something (cannot remember and I'm not on my main computer so I can't test it). I uninstall and then reinstall thinking that might help...same error. I've rolled back the graphics drivers, that didn't work.

Every other game I've tried works, including old ones and new ones as well as Mass Effect 2.

Any helpful advice?

I'd tell you to verify the game cache. It might work, not sure though.

Are you close or using the computer where ME1 is installed?

Well, then there is no way we can do a troubleshooting at the moment :P

Get the exact error message you get and google it. Such a typical advice but honestly it's your best bet. It's likely that someone else had the same problem as you and asked somewhere on the internet. Possibly even got an answer.

I've tried that - didn't get any answers. Thanks though.

I just checked the game myself, and it still works, so the game itself is fine, just in conflict with something on your system, evidently. Not sure if this would work, but wondering if your save broke somehow? Try going to your savegames, which are located in your documents folder, and moving them elsewhere, to see if it works without them, perhaps?

Might want to try running in compatibility mode for an older version of windows.

Sounds like a broken save after reading all of this. If you can not load a different save or make a new game ( IE same issues with those two ) Then you might have to uninstall and re-install the game. Only thing I can think of at this point. ( Since verifying did not work for you. )

Might be a compatibility mode issue but I really doubt it, MA1 is old but not THAT old. If it was Dungeon Keeper 2 then yea it would be a compatibility issue and you would have to find workarounds ( the modes vista has will not work with DK2 no matter what you try. So you will have to look online for workarounds. )

Most people say Noveria was the most patience crushing, but for me, it's Feros all the way.

I got the computer in 2007. I'm too poor for anything newer.

have you changed the hardware? (graphics card / ram etc...)
even though i doubt it for me1, some games error if you have too much ram
i.e Act of War: Direct Action ( i have to go through msconfig and set it so i have 2 gigs max running on boot to play it)

That doesn't make any sense, not to mention its mass effect.

Just to add to this -- I also had problems running Mass Effect the first time, until I ran STEAM as an Admin. Then Mass Effect installed correctly, and I have not had problems since.
