Just curious why some members have different Steam & SG names?

I'm ShandyAndy in both. Keeps things simple for me. 20 years ago I used to use the user name Shandy (my RL nickname) but that proved a popular name so often I couldn't use it because it was already taken. I find Its very rare that ShandyAndy is already taken on web sites so by default I tend to pick that one.

Steam & SG Names

My two names are the same, but maybe some people just do so because it makes it harder (just a little bit) to find out whose profile it really is? just a wild guess :P

kOROMOShYdOpOlOuS is too long to be a steam name, in most of the games full name isn't shown, so I had to come up with new name for steam.

I used to change name on steam quite often, so I just picked one of my at the time most used names for this site.

Steam names can be changed often, SG names can't. And it does not matter if someone else shares display name with you on steam, while on SG each name is unique. This would at least partially explain it.

Used to be same, but now changed them both. My original name was CARLEST but it was very unoriginal, so I changed it (Carl is my name and Est stands for Estonia, my homeland). Now I just use my first and middle name on SG and some random crap on Steam :P

My steam name are my two RL first names. ...I was stupid choosing that name when creating my steam account. That's all about it. ;-)

I'm not even sure why. Most likely because the nicknames I used at that time were already taken.

I used to have the same name. However after the change I couldn't decide which username to choose, so I went with 2 different names - both are some kind of word play so I've went with more "user-friendly" on SG (because you can't change it for a year) and with another one on Steam ;)

When signing up here I was relatively new to the whole Steam community and friend thing in general. Only added my first friends the same year I joined this site and think I'd been on Steam for over 4 years before even bothering with any of that kind of thing. On top of not really being involved in the community, I didn't understand quite how connected with Steam this site would be when signing up, so didn't think to have the same name in both places. If I had have known I was going to end up adding quite a lot of people. especially people from SG, then I'd have likely gone with the same name in both places for continuity.

Had a few people not realising it was me when adding them to give them a game they'd won in the past because of the different name thing.

Yeah I noticed this too when doing my last batch of giveaways there was like 90% or something with different names made it much harder & took much longer, had to go back to SG to work out who was who =P

Probably because people like to change their username a lot. On steam it's easy but SG you have to wait one year :P

Mine is the same. Sometimes I do wish I could change it maybe to different animals but at the same time I like it :3

Sometimes it can just be confusing. :P Like e.g. with you, I never know if I should call you 'luller' or 'haven' xD So I just end up calling you both randomly haha.

Yeah it's probably the main reason! Plus one year is a long time to have a username. People just get bored xD

Well, I'm known as chicken! Plus it's not the same, other animals just don't fit in the same way as chicken does! Like something like SadisticWolf doesn't have that funny ring to it :'(

Because in the day, I'm just a man on SG, MrRenard. Boring life, boring person, bla bla.
But when the night comes, I go on Steam and I become Jirkis the Wonderful Potatoe Wizard. Still a boring life, boring person, bla bla, though...

+1 Because Jirkis is the Wonderful Potatoe Wizard SG needs, but not the one it deserves right now.

Mine's the same. Easier and less confusing that way. :P Only difference is that SG didn't want to use _

But it's close enough. :p Mille_W vs MilleW

My name on steam was Oshet too, after a while I changed it but couldn't change my SG name at that time because of one change per year so it stayed like this.

My two names are different, I haven't changed my steam name in a while, but before I used to go with whoever I felt like being named after.

Several reasons:

  • you get less impersonated with 2 different names
  • wouldn't like to be that easy identifiable with a less common username
  • using one name everywhere gets boring/annoying
  • i like the ring of different names

you get less impersonated with 2 different names

why is that?

Permalink

because its less consistent to begin with - therefore a less consistent profile to impersonate;
while, if your known you on steam as XX and on sg as XX - you're known as "clearly" XX ...

but the key of impersonating is that the victim never gets to see (or checks) the real profile, thus isn't aware of any inconsistencies in the first place?

victim = derpson, who won't see the difference no matter what, even if
someone where to impersonate XX and show XY to the derpson ...

if the guy that is supposed to be scammed is somewhat less of a derpson
he will be suspicious as the steam name doesn't match the sg one

^ while the impersonator already knows that, but also knows there are enough
derpsons out there that will be fooled anyway but it would be easier impersonating
a XX on steam and XX sg

My login name for Steam is actually Fruitbean, it's the first nickname I ever used and i've never been on a site were the name were already taken.
I was not aware I would be as active on SG when registering, lately i've been figuring about changing to Robin.R (Couldn't use the dot in the name afaik) as im named on Steam, still same profile pic tho.. But I don't think I mind keeping "Fruitbean" here.
But I also want prettypinkprincess so it's hard! :D

I'm pretty sure the reason was SG didn't like the hyphen in my steam name

I was stupid to change it for something I use on random sites, so I need to wait for 7 more months to change it again =<
But, actually, it was a good thing because the whole concept of me changed when I joined SG, so my previous nickname stopped making sense (and all the people who used that nickname were lost in time), so I'm currently looking for a suitable replacement, but it's not going well, so I'm using some weird name ideas in hopes of finding myself.
