As the title says, if possible it should be available on Steam. Mostly looking for RPGs but other kinds of games are fine as well. Hidden gems are welcome.

If anybody never gave Katamari Damacy a try, then i'd say to go for the "We <3 Katamari" remake they just dropped on PC.

For straight up PS2 without PC involvement? Graffiti Kingdom. Weak gameplay, but the ability to just draw things to life took up faaar too much of my time way back when. Also Sky Odyssey, loved that game. Adventuring as a pilot was the best.

+1000 to the Katamari series recommendation. I never grinded out the million roses on PS2 WLK but I played every level like 50 times as a kid. good times...

I am ashamed to admit I completed the roses task, just to see what it would do. Took a good long while of shorter sessions. :3

Koudelka- PS1
Gladius- PS2/Xbox/Gamecube

I'll also recommend Septerra Core. It's one of those games that has been given away a billion times and is probably in your library already, but it's actually a pretty good one.

I'm going to feel like a bit of an ass giving a -1 to a recommendation, but even back in the day I couldn't stand Koudelka.
It got a lot of praise but all I got was bored, and really aggravated at the repeating combat music.

I mean the combat system was pretty interesting, and it did great things with the hardware, but as a game it just gave me buyers remorse.

Can't beat Gothic games :D Not very old, but Shadowrun games are good fun as well.

As far as PS1 RPGs go, I'm just finishing up Chrono Cross again, that's always a classic with an amazing soundtrack. Suikoden 1 & 2 is coming out eventually (sadly not available yet) but would be a great choice, so long as they don't screw it up. Grandia 1 & 2 are both available; I've only played 2 (and really enjoyed it) but I've heard the first is good as well. Of course the Final Fantasy games are all available... not exactly PS1/2 era but Dragon Quest 11 is relatively new and plays like a modern take on classic RPGs. The Disgaea games are good if you're into the 'tactics' type games (and grinding). Live A Live was also super fun, but that's an HD-2D port of a SNES-era game (and Chrono Trigger and many others of course, if we're talking SNES games).

I'm sure there are lots of others I'm not thinking of but those are the first ones that come to mind. I have a thing for RPGs myself 😁

I second Grandia! The first one was for a long time the only (and first) RPG I'd ever completed. At the time I'd start games at the start of the holidays and if not finished by the end of same holidays, I'd restart them from scratch at another holiday... But this one I pulled through the end in one go, really rare for me.

Nice! I can't count how many games I had to restart as a kid because I'd play for a while then not play for several months and forget everything, heh. I'll have to give the first one a go one of these days!

How old? An all time favourite for me is Might & Magic VI, which is literally a hidden gem, since the only way to own it on Steam is to buy M&M X - Legacy. And I believe no other M&M games are on Steam, but they are available on GoG.

If you're going to play the first Grandia it's probably best to play the original Sega Saturn version with the translation patch instead. The HD version is a completely half assed hack job of a port, they don't even include the Digital Museum expansion.
The Grandia II port is more faithful, but still has a lot of issues, I'd still recommend the original Dreamcast version of that one over any other version.
Most ports of retro games either ruin the art outright, or modify the look so there are two or three clashing art styles between backgrounds/characters/enemies to look more 'modern'.

I didn't know it was missing features, since I really never played the originals.

I always liked the Ace Combat series, but on steam, I think, only the last one is available

Radiata Stories was my favorite PS2 RPG. Great story, with a branch option midway, to see the story from the other perspective. Combat is realtime where you learn moves as you level, then combine them to form combos. Also many companions to collect with companion combos. Not on Steam, but you can emulate on PC.

As penance for giving a -1 to one of Blando's earlier recommendations, I'll suggest Suikoden 2 on the PS1.
Sadly it's not PC remade but that game was such a powerhouse of an early RPG. The combat, the combos, the huge roster. Hnnnngh.

Now I remembered this game exists, I'm going to have to find a way to play it again.

Yea, and they messed up its art because apparently pixel art backgrounds aren't good enough for modern audiences.

That's sad, but, I think is because most upscaling tools aren't pixel perfect. And HD remasters are mostly done using automatic tools.

PC:
Sunset Overdrive (already 2014, but I think it's pretty underrated and has a nice Infamous (PS3) vibe to it)
Sleeping Dogs
Prototype
Bayonetta
Enslaved
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XII

PS1:
Digimon World 2003

PS2 hidden gems:
Shadow Hearts
Grandia III

(The PS titles aren't on Steam, but they run great on PCSX2 if you don't own a PS2 console)

If you want to play PS1 games, in most cases it's better to play play the originals (either on original hardware or via Duckstation) since ports to PC tend to ruin the art and/or be filled with bugs. Most PS2 ports tend to fare much better (unless they're made by SquareEnix), but do your research to see what they changed before buying. Emulation will almost always give the best experience for these older games just because companies that port them tend to not give a shit about the source material.

Here are some classic console ports that were actually done well:
DOOM 64
Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2
Psychonauts
Turok, Turok 2
TY the Tasmanian Tiger , TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2, TY the Tasmanian Tiger 3
Shadow Man Remastered
PowerSlave Exhumed
