Salt awakens your taste buds and make your brain perceive the flavor of other ingredients more deeply
Spicy ingredients like pepper cause your brain to shut down the pain receptors and other receptors in your mouth (more or less depending on the Scoville scale of course) and you perceive other flavors less than without pepper.
However black pepper is good for you as it improves digestion and absorption of vitamin and minerals in the food.
Salt is evil and it will give you hypertension eventually unless you're rich enough to buy the uber expensive hipster kind that comes from a beach in Hawaii or has been carved by friendly locals in the Himalayas and whatnot.

salt also helps the body retain water and is the special ingredient in gatoraid that helps quench thirst...
salt also has been known to harden arteries witch makes it "hard" for the arteries to let plaque build up pass when it breaks free helping to cause heart attacks and strokes.
