Kinda of a crappy day to announce that, what with the Coassck Motorcycle Gang and Bandidos having a big shootout in Waco Texas.

Definitely a game I will keep my eye on though.

Kind of. Using the good first mechanics, but they are promising new story, new map editor (the y call it game editor, cause it allows to change almost everything) and some more goodies =)

I sure hope it will be a fantastic game as the first Cossacks was, cause that could mean financial success and the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 announcement =))

Well all RTS games are kind of similar but not all allowed 30 000 to 60 000 separate units on a map =) And it was only 2001 year back there...

30 000 to 60 000 separate units on a map

Wow. You mean separated units like AoE, or like Total War?

Permalink

Yes. And you could command each and any one of them or combine to groups to ease the battle manoeuvres!

Separated. With officers you could order them into formations, giving them bonuses, so it was little easier to manage them, but I think they could work individualy without a problem. :)
Plus another great feature: not every unit was able to attack buildings, so you had to balance your soldiers - bowmen were quite terrible against armies, but could defimate a fortress in minutes (including towers and walls)
Ships and cannons when attacked the buildings, shards of stone were flying around, possibly killing units nerby or damaging other buildings.
Firing your cannons and muskets cost you iron and coal - cause you know, gunpowder and the bullet :)
Game is still really strong, even today, it matured nicely. If you can get it from a bundle (Bundlestars had them in bundles a few times) I would definitely recommend :)
Not fair, now I want to play with Cossacks, even though I'm not really good in RTS :D

That sounds interesting, there is a Cossacks games right now on Bundlestars (http://www.bundlestars.com/all-bundles/victory-mega-bundle/) so I might try it.

I'm really bad at RTS games, but I still like them. AoE II is one if my favorite games ever. I tried MP once and I got crushed, so I decided to stay away and keep playing against the AI :p

I'd like to add somethings to what you said

  • Some units, defense towers and ships required maintenance gold (maybe we can call it salary :P), and if you run out of gold, your soldiers (that have gold maintenance cost) would go rogue.

    • Peasants and soldiers required food maintenance. Which means that if you run out of food supply, your people would start to die randomly

    • You could capture certain enemy buildings, peasant, and artillery units.

    • Defense towers had minimum attack range, and cannot shoot over stone walls (yes, I tried that unfortunately)

    • Stone walls and wooden walls had stone and wood maintenance cost, respectively.

    • I dont think that archers who belong to nations were that bad (but mercenary type archer was bad indeed)

    • Do you guys remember there was a bug (or maybe it was not a bug)? Imagine there was an enemy building, and enemy soldier next to each other. You could order your grenadier to attack to building (he would try to throw grenade), and when you instantly order your unit to attack enemy soldier, the grenade would be thrown to enemy unit. And the same thing would work for the archer (fire arrow thrown to enemy soldier)

Problem was while archers hit heavy, they had terrible accuracy. But in numbers against groups of enemies were great. Like 1-200 tatars - the turkish mounted archers - could easily decimate an enemy squadron with their hit and run tactic. Then attack the buildings :D
I think I remember soldiers dying kind of randomly while they stood under a building that was attacked by a granadier - I think the granades had a little AoE damage.

yea grenades had Aoe damage, but you could literally throw them to enemy units instead of buildings with adjusted timing :D

I like tatars, too. Absence of 18th century was a little problematic, but I still would pick those nations. Their gameplay was a little diverse

Maybe not related with gameplay, but I also like the structures. Each nation having unique and beautiful structures...

In many ways I doubt that, unless they scaled the rest of the game's features down to compensate.

And then we'll both go and find Evgeniy Grigorovich ( he is responsible for this game, and many other GSC RTS titles ) ? =)

of course :D

You know I really liked the destruction pattern of the sructures (the burning part, the irreversible burning part with more fire, and the grand finale). And I really really want to see that animation again. If the game will not be released, we can use Evgeniy Grigorovich's house to recreate that animation

Many are... But to make a good game you need a lot of money =)
Tho Stalker 2 was completed about 60-70% back when GSC closed it doesn't mean they can use anything from there in "next-gen" game experience everyone wants =))

Awesome, i still play the original Cossacks every now and then, it's an amaizing game and was part of my Childhood, i really really hope it won't dissapoint as Cossacks 2 did.
I Still put all my Musketeers behind the wooden walls, best defence strategy ever ;D.

Yea, this strategy made it's way to early CS (1.3 i think) mods =))))
Well They are telling basically the same, they want to give the first game mechanic experience with new graphics, and i really like how they are describing the new map editor!

That's for the best, if it's not broken, don't fix it :D.
I just hope the game doesn't get a lot of hate from the modern gaming comunity, who aren't really used to Cossacks style RTS games.
Yeah, editor is always fun, put 1000+ of units on boths sides and let them fight until death :D.

Yea... Your right here... Gamers nowadays are to damn spoiled with press X to win triple next-gen multi graphics games... But we still can hope for the best =)
Every reboot is mainly for old school gamers ( Baldurs gate, icewind dale and others )

Cossacks is one of the three best forgotten RTS games of all time along with Total Annihilation and Ground Control. TA has a spiritual successor in Supreme Commander and GC in World in Conflict. If they really forget that terrible Cossacks 2 and go back to the kitchen with C3, it's going to be a much-needed revival of that wonderful gem.
