Having been around SG for a while, I noticed we had a group for pretty much everything. However, what about a writing group? I have posted quite a number of my own works on newgrounds.com when I was an active user on it and the community did give me a lot of great responses. How about I create a Steam Group on creative writing (you can post your thesis about a portal gun is totally feasible too if you feel like explaining all the science facts to us.) and there will be events once in a while and the winner of the event gets to receive a steam game? Group giveaways might not be a priority and it's really nice to know people who share the same interest as me. Readers and critics are all welcome too!

There's already one ongoing writing contest to pick mods! Hope to see you writers there =D

I'd quite like it. I enjoy reading but have never wrote anything. I'm interested in writing something though. Nonetheless I'd love to join.

Do you have any suggestions for a name? I have two options right now, The Writers Guild of Steam (not the most stunning or attractive name I can think of) or The Boiling Pens...because it's a steam group and steam is supposed to be water vapor after boiling....yeah, I think it's corny too.

I'm terrible at coming up with names but out of those names, I'd say I prefer The Writers Guild of Steam just because it reminds me of Elder Scrolls. But Boiling Pens is more unique... If I suddenly get a great idea for a name, I'll let you know.

I second 'The Writers Guild of Steam' just because sometimes the simplest answer is the best one.

(NaNo is also currently ongoing, which should help make recruitment easier. But just because there's a group for everything, doesn't mean those groups succeed.)

I would love to join a Steam writing group!
I'm currently working on a novel and I've done a lot of critical work (reviews and such) on my blog.
It's my passion, but it sure is a lonely one.

Ah, creative writing is my passion. But the problem is I do it in my language. When it comes to the richness of language, I can assure that my mother tongue is far superior to English (that is if I even master English).

And even so,that is to say, I have my own group that prefer reading my work in my mother tongue. It is not just about language problem but also choice, narrow, focus of the group you are trying to create.

Let's say that even all work is in English, and since English is a major language, what can you do to differentiate that group compare to other existing groups. Also, problem with professionalism, copyrights, incentives, and ability to protect your own ideas must also be assured. I can assure that top hit novel does not simple spread their ideas around (except for fan made fic that eventually made into the book store like 50 shades of grey). Sure anyone can join the group. But what people should join such group ? Those that write seriously don't usually throw their ideas around (except when you try to find a suitable artist to co-op with making comics/mangas); Those that wish to write for fun usually lost around when it comes to incentives/criticism/seriousness.

In fact, to make it short, you as a creator, pioneer must define the uniqueness of the group from the start (which is what exactly you are doing right now).

More over, if it is steam based, you also must aware around what kind of tools can leverage the writing itself, or how it fit to the writing format, should it be traditional writing or free form writing, internet based writing. The 'creative' is not just how the ideas but also go into the media form. Taken Steam also has its own unique system of formatting and additional with game icons and stuffs etc....That's the leverage you are looking for, or at least, be the first one to promote such ideas.

And when it comes to the focus of the ideas, what kind of game you are looking for, focused in ?

The group does not necessarily need to be a game-based one since my definition of creativity is as free as it can be. However, to be honest, I would want the group to stray away from fanfics to an extent.

As serious as this group can get, I do have vision of the most professional writing group but I do hope it can grow to become a tight-knit community with the bonds being pages of novel embodied with soul and pure fervor!

And the most unique part about this group could be the variety of its work. My main expertise is realism as I consider myself a realist author. For others, some of them could write visual novels, some put his or her love into biography, and there are those who find love in writing plays taking place in the Renaissance Age!

And remember, there are readers as well.

Writers are the suppliers, Readers and the demands.

And the government of the group is you, as a way to promote/not promote certain genres.

Without one or another, the group will dead. It is yours job to decide to find specific type of writers to attract specific readers.

Or target certain type of readers and evolve the group around such.

Being major in Business I do concern and often see how groups tend to die due to lacks of specific targeting.

Oh we do have the readers, it is going to be ourselves at first then we will deal with the matter of publicity later.

In the beginning, the group will be small enough the market equilibrium would be we read what we create (surprise surprise, I too took macroeconomics in college wink wink)

Eventually, when the maturity of the group is present, we will have problems. But for now, I am not skeptical about this group at all. A small band of writers we will have, a group of friends we shall be.

Yay, writing, one of the few things I am absolutely confident I can do. :-) Usually, I write in my mother tongue, Czech, but I do have a couple of stories and about fifteen or so poems in English, or mixed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macaronic_language).

I love playing with the language, and one of the recent “language” achievements I'm proud of is an 18-verse rhyming poem about Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire, which does not contain a single vowel. (I'm not sure if something like that can be done in English. Even in Czech, this was really pushing it. :-))

I would like to join too, as I am working on fantasy novel myself (albeit it's in my native language) and would be interested in sharing the passion with other gamers.
