Well... well, well, well, well. Seems Square finally decided to give us a bigger discount that 50% off for these two games.
Nier Automata 60% off, 15.99€ https://store.steampowered.com/app/524220/NieRAutomata/
Final Fantasy XV 60% off 13.99€ https://store.steampowered.com/app/637650/FINAL_FANTASY_XV_WINDOWS_EDITION/

Here's the store page for their winter sale, which will also last through the actual Steam Winter Sale, so doesn't seem like there will be any changes to the discounts: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/squareenix_wintersale23

Almost the entire FF catalog is getting their record high discount actually. Very nice.

Thanks for the heads up!

But if you are in the XP program at GreenManGaming, it can be cheaper there:

Ooh thanks for pointing that out, it brings the discount to 68%, which is not insignificant!

And, you should have a 3% off voucher in the december XP pack which can be applied.

Nier: Replicant is also showing as 68% off on GMG with bronze tier XP.

Ok, can't tell how it's on bronze, because I am on gold tier. But 68% is more than 60% on Steam. :)

What does FFXV cost there with the XP program and bonus discount?

Seems GMG won't let me buy stuff when I'm in the USA anymore (using store wi-fi, heh), it keeps emptying my cart when I'm on mobile, so I can't check.

In germany? 10.86€ without DLC. (11.20€ without the voucher I already used, so I did some math. :) )

There was a patch before Replicant, but you should probably still use community patches as well.

I was looking at this sale but am not sure which FF title would be good to play nowadays. I've only played X back on PS2 and was annoying in many places. Which one has a good story and not much grinding?

Comment has been collapsed.

To be honest I think everybody's answer to that question will be insanely biased towards whichever they played when they were young and fresh...
For me the FF gold standard is 7-8-9-10, but it probably just mostly says that I'm 30-something!

That's what I'm afraid of. Every single one I've looked up on steam has reviews ranging from "the best FF ever" to "game is good but bad port, ignore nostalgia reviews" and "grindy mess, story is lame". And it's not like they're really cheap enough for an impulse buy either (for Eastern Europe).

All the final fantasy game's stories are weird and none of the them are not grindy. I'm assuming if you didn't like FF X, you won't like any of the other ones either. But it depends what parts did you find annoying?

Starship troopers football sport thingy.
I don't mind engaging weird story, I don't want to play something with a shallow obvious story that won't make me push forward.

Ah yes, the unskippable mini-games... If I remember correctly, FF VII has the most annoying ones (bike chase + submarine bit really drove me nuts back in the day).

I loved the bike chase thing and played it several times. It's one of my favorite parts of Final Fantasy VII :D Just goes to show how different opinions can be.

I don't normally like football or any kind of "sport" game so I can completely understand that, but once I got into it and really understood it I kinda liked it :D

Also kind of liked the ending of X it was different than most endings, if not somewhat sad.

Played FF13 this year and it still holds up. You do have to muck around a bit to play it fullscreen but its an easy fix that you only need to do once. Grinding wise, I would say not needed but recommended and not till late in the game. There is a really good spot in Chapter 11 that I used that made end game fights more manageable and I didn't feel the need to grind before this point.

Played FF15 awhile back. Didn't grind and the story is solid. Had a lot of fun playing it and definitely worth picking up.

FF7 Remake is awesome and a must play. Didn't feel the need to grind unless you want to do extra stuff.

For non-mainline games, Crisis Core holds up but shows its age and you can tell that it was a PSP game first. Worth playing if you get around to playing FF7R since it is a prequel to FF7. Stranger of Paradise does not play like most FF games, but I really liked it and it has a unique charm to it (cue Frank Sinatra).

If you can wait till after Christmas, I'll give you my opinion on another FF game then :p. I'm about to start FF12 in a bit, so I'll let you know how it holds up.

I love FF12 and just triple dipped for the PC version after it finally saw a slightly improved sale price. I never finished it on PS2 or 4, so third time's a charm hopefully (I tend to drift away from games in the final stretch, so almost certainly not a reflection on the game).

Once you patch out most of the stuttering FF13 is beautiful on PC. And it features this beauty Gapra Whitewood theme.

Judging by SteamDB, NIER Automata does not often receive a discount, on average about three times a year. In 2022 there was a discount only once, and in 2023 this is already the fourth time. Good opportunity to buy, who knows how often they plan to discount it in the future.

This is par for the course when it comes to SE JP games. Back when they still owned Eidos, every SE sale you would find ended up just being Eidos games on perpetual discounts. They really hate discounting their JP games for whatever reason.

A kinda similar thing happened to Dark Souls 3. For some reason, Bandai didn't give a discount for like 3 years I think. Only started again this year, and it was like a 50% discount. Very weird stuff.

NieR:Automata is an absolutely amazing game worth every penny. It's my #1 b2p game on Steam, I highly recommend it.

Final Fantasy XV looks fantastic and I've wanted it for awhile, I really need to get it eventually.

Yeah, I highly doubt as well. Wouldn't that be really nice though, many of their games really fit under "good old games".
At least they're good with GDPR.

It's a step in the right direction from SE, but they do have a while to go, and I got a bigger backlog than ever, so no rush. Probably a good time to get a game if you really wanna play it, but I experienced enough nier automata in the FFXIV raids like 2 years ago and still not craving the main game yet. Was more interested in their old ff games but those are super high priced vs my backlog and what I'm willing to spend on them after so many years already so I guess I'll wait a few more years or maybe never.

Also I find it kinda weird they launched a sale before the xmas sale. Is this to help them avoid the steam xmas sale prices which would make them go lower than they want to, or am I misunderstanding? I feel like they did this last year too.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They probably launched sales before the big Xmas sale to gain more attention. Once everything on steam goes on sale, SE titles are kinda lost in the mix

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean it's probably because they don't really look like xmas deals compared to the other stuff thats on sale that's more recent, and many people have said for years that they miss the old steam sale deals, so even if the new ones are not as good, they'll find stuff that's more recent and worth more for the value then the SE stuff. That should say something to their ceo's and why I find it a step in the right direction, but far from where it should be.

I know these are new lows on steam.. but this is the norm for GMG. GMG has been doing 60% off on Square Enix jrpgs for a while. The new lows on steam is a good thing though.
cuz now GMG is undercutting those prices by going up to 68% off on some games lol

I know people hate on Epic Games here, but, they had the same discounts on top of 33% off coupons. Steam also has coupons, but they stopped using them (and giving them) ages ago... They never even stacked with discounts either.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, for everything EGS does wrong, their coupon game is much, much better than whatever Steam is doing. I wasn't around when Steam had big flash sales, but nowadays, sales are kinda meh, especially since other online stores do often offer better sale prices.
