With hotels and flights, the excuse is that it works both ways and that customers can also get cheaper tickets if demand is low.
They are also services that have an expiration date.
Neither is the case here. This is not dynamic pricing, it's price gouging and hidden inflation.

That's not the same at all. With dynamic pricing someone else might have the same parts of a series as you and would pay a different price for the rest. Just because some algorithm would decide that one person is in the position to pay more than the other.

I came back from the grave, just to slap your hand and leave you with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-YbhArR-qQ
There are more examples in the channel. It's fun content.
Basically, do not use AI to get your facts or information without double checking, they are and will feed you wrong information quite frequently. They are also programmed to make you feel good, to touch your ego, so you feel smart even if you are wrong.
You can even ask GPT the same thing twice in different days, and it will give you information differently two times, sometimes contradicting itself. It can even give you false information about something and you can correct it by providing a source, which then it states it was after all, wrong and that you were right after all. I've done this before where you want something specific that is not public (stated by many sources or other users), but can be seen by visiting the original source for information, like say, update news on a games home page. It will provide with outdated or false information but if you point out where to look exactly, it will correct itself. This is after multiple attempts to get it to understand what i was trying to seek, like a discussion of sorts, where it continues to give the same type of answer. Until you provide a new source directly.
Back to the grave i go.

while everything you said is pretty much true.. the video you posted is kinda misleading. now i'm no ai expert, but i've read this before and it makes sense so i'll pass it on to you, so take it with a grain of salt. this isn't a hill i'm willing to die on.
apparently the models between text and voice ai are different. the text models at chatgpt.com and others are allowed time to search and process information before displaying a result, while the voice models which are frequently showcased on youtube as being very, very stupid are designed to reply quickly. you can see how this could lead to much worse results from the voice ai.
but idk, you're dead so you might not even get to read this. either way, thought it might be interesting to whoever stumbles across this.

Never trust AI...
My country was under occupation for 123 years by 3 different countries and when I asked about what laws were existing at that time in different parts of Poland under occupation ChatGPT started hallucinating and told me some strange laws and after more googling I saw that it was just copying the laws that were present in XVII France...

game bundles if you own part of it.
this is different by far

Well, this is just confirmation that my decision to steer clear of PSN after my PS5 bricked due to the actual shit quality of the console, continues to be the correct decision.

Their single player games are typically peak, but I can live without them. I'll survive.
Their live services crap OTOH. I skip those anyway for the most part. Helldivers 2 being a notable exception. :)

To be honest even their single player games nowadays rehash so many ideas thst they end up feeling same-ish, or they fund projects like the single player Venom game that nobody asked for. My ps5 has become a platform to play old ps4 games, the new Spider-Man games (only because I love the character) and my PSVR2, which they have abandoned. I prefer to play on my comparatively worse laptop most games since I dont have to deal with Sony's shit

how is that not a crime?
It should be. But seeing how things are going lately, I doubt any lawmaker is going to outlaw it. Let's just hope it won't come to PC.

1) Another great argument for never getting PlayStation (or ditch it)
2) On a more positive note, if I ONLY buy games when they reach their maximal historical low discounts (no clue what the max discounts on PS are, I guess it's nothing like 90% discounts on Steam, right?), will I pay even less? Because if they see that I am not willing to pay up at all, anything other than a bigger discount won't get a sale from me... To me, it seems that only people who are willing to pay the full 100% price will be taken advantage of, and people who buy at some discounts will only get the lowest discounts on which they would normally buy the game, right?
But IF you dont buy at all unless there is super high discount, I dont know how would they abuse that aganist you
Also, that is assuming that the dynamic thing would be the discount %, as having a dynamic base price would be straight out illegal where I live, and I guess across all of EU.

how is that not a crime?
Pretty sure it already is or will be soon in the EU but you know... our entire political system is not based on corporate bribing so I guess you guys are screwed.
On the other hand, customers have a choice and that choice is not to buy another Playstation ever again. Will they exercize their power though? I doubt it.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's actually allowed in the EU but the company must inform you when they establish the price they demand from you by an automated process. So OP's screenshoted example would be illegal, as it lacks such information.
And while it's legal to charge individualized prices in the EU, if you don't agree with your data being shared/collected, they lack the foundation for establishing individualized prices. At least to a greater degree.

Makes sense. I wish more people would exercize their rights instead of clicking "accept and continue" most of the time though. But then you can't fault companies for making it easier for people to get screwed by them. Customers have been given the means to protect themselves. If they don't use it, it's on them.
Still, if this kind of thing becomes a norm, I'm pretty sure legislation will tighten because as I was saying the booking industry is given a pass since prices can be higher or lower than the norm depending on demand. I doubt Playstation will start handing out games for free if someone loses their job for instance.

BAD idea combined with strange timing.
It looks like a Sony move to earn more money.
Strange how it happens so fast after Marathon release and after they changed Marathon predatory microtransactions to be less predatory to not copy Destiny 2 system.

Dynamic Pricing has been in use for... decades now? By nearly every digital goods companies.
A different implementation of it is called "regional pricing". Where they say its based on regional "income". [which is a lie]
Sadly, the thing sony is doing is dynamic pricing based on personal "income".... that ONLY increases price, not lower it.
If was truely based on income, like how these companies have been saying for decades for regional pricing, then this new personal pricing should also be based on income.
Example: childrens income is zero, so shouldn't their 'infinite copied' digital products also be free? sort of like how poor regional area pricing has games nearly free cost while everyone other customer is over charged to cover the difference the poor regional area pricing creates?
Any price difference on digital goods is disgrimination and should be illegal. Period.

If anything, discrimination is pricing the product same in USA and a country with significantly smaller economy. I dont want to go deep into the salary topic etc, but just by taking official average salary. USA average is 7k per month. In my country its 1.8k monthly. I earn a tad over average. Nothing substantial. Yet I pay the same for the product as you do.
In the case of Sony taking in personal earnings is going too far. But pricing it differently on regions is just fair. Especially for digital products where you dont have any tangible value to one specific licence. For example, building a car takes fixed amount of resources and money and building 100 or 10000 vehicles does not substantially change the price per unit. Which is not the case for digital products. So being priced for USA/Germany/Norway and other main markets is discriminating against markets where people earn 2, 3 or even 6 times less.
IMO with globalization the discrimination is only becoming more widespread. Even with access to technology. Cars, phones, PCs... everything is pretty much built for first world countries. For USA or Germany if you earn above average getting a new mid sized sedan for family is normal thing. Or getting a new phone, getting decent laptop. The prices and technology is built (and priced) for these markets. Yet the macbook or VW Golf costs exactly the same for you and me.. Of course, mostly you have budget choices as well, but when majority of market is building tech for countries with strong economy, someone doing the same job as you do, but living in a different country cant afford half of what you do.
Only thing which stays "fair" is real estate. I can buy a house for 200k while you probably have to spend a million in USA. But the differences where our salaries level out ends there.
PS. As someone living in a country which is slowly recovering from soviet regime and had its economy destroyed, I feel it more and more. I have recently traveled quite a lot to Germany and Finland. Two developed countries very close to me, with relatively similar culture but with stronger economies. Both countries have significantly higher salaries, and apart from real estate other costs are very similar. Fuel, technology, food at times is even cheaper and better quality. It simply is this way. The food mostly comes from same suppliers and technology is built by same companies, so obviously they cost the same. YET the economy does not level out. This is where the discrimination comes in and globalization is slowly turning our existing world structure into useless pile of steaming shit where some people are more equal then others. And I cant stress enough - the food costs the same even though our salaries tend to be 2-3 times lower. How is that fair?

That's TOTALLY messed up.
And I checked. No, it's not illegal. Specially in the US.
Still messed up

It might be an unpopular opinion but price discrimination is as old as trade. The idea that every customer should be treated equally isn't very popular in business circles. If one customer is poor and the other rich why not charge the rich one more? Steam does this since it's inception.

or the rich person pays regular, poor person pays less. Of course from business perspective getting rich to pay more will make more profit. But the concept is fine if it works other way around.
Comment has been collapsed.
Weird reasoning. Be it "as old as trade" - should we undo other progress too because the previous non-regulation was "as old as"?
And if we embrace one form of discrimination, because it's beneficial for someone we can align with, why not do the same with some other form of discrimination? Especially as the main benefactor of your case isn't the poorer buyers but the actually rich owners, becoming even richer.

Such a law doesn't exist. Not as an actual law and also not in the sense of any economic theory. But even if I accept your general suggestion that there is a "natural incentive" to maximize profit - so what?
Just because you are pessimistic or depressed enough to surrender to the ambitions of billionaires doesn't elevate your logic.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're right, I thought they'd such a law in American capitalism and I was wrong.

The interesting part is that this actually kind of shifted in the US. About a century ago, there wasn't an actual "law" but the general understanding went into direction of your maximum profitability and shareholder interest being the exclusive ultimate ambition of a company.
But economic theory and the fundamental understanding of corporate duties and their prime interests/benefits developed further.

This is why we should fight for the preservation of physical media for as long as possible. Can't dynamically price that. Most of my PS4/5 games are just used physical copies, so this won't really affect me personally while physicals last, though it's a terrible direction they're heading. This is probably especially bad for indie games, I don't know if they'll get to choose to engage in this or if it'll be forced upon them?
