Not sure if this has been suggested before (ctrl+f-ing sync definitely didn't reveal anything), but for those of us on (semi-)private profiles an indication on the main page about a required sync would be nice. Currently you only find out about the fact that you need to sync when you open a giveaway. Having this would definitely make some users' lives a bit nicer.
Thanks.

Excuse my ignorance, but when do you need it besides when entering a giveaway?

If you took the time to read the FAQ like you should you would know that it is,such a laziness these days, people wanting everyone to point out every little thing to them and throw common sense out the window.

Does my Steam profile need to be public to use the site?

You'll need to switch to a public profile when registering, so we can confirm you have a legitimate Steam account that meets our minimum requirements. From that point on, you can use the site with a private profile, however, if you wish to enter giveaways, the site will ask you to switch to a public Steam profile once a week to bring your account up-to-date.

Looks like to me there is another way to find out..boom drops mic!

Problem solved

This.

Seriously, are you people THAT lazy? You have to do it only once in a week, that's first thing. The second thing - you want notification that will remind you about it? Well, you got that notification when you try to enter GA! There are far more important things for mods to do that making life nicer for few lazy users -.-

What? Did you even read what I'm asking for?
What I'm asking for is a notification of the fact that you need to sync on the front page (currently you'll only see the fact that you need to sync if you open a giveaway). I'm well aware of the fact that I need to manually set myself to public to sync and all that jazz, I've been doing it for a while now.

Still if you know you need to sync why would you need to be reminded i still stand that why do sites need to remind you of every little thing,if you are aware you need to sync then you should not need to be reminded,i am aware i need to work,i do not ask work to call me to remind me to go work.

Also there is another way to know if you need to sync without joining a GA even know you say that is the only way,it just not on the front page in big bold words to make your life that much easier since it seems to be so busy you can not be bothered to click on your name in the upper right corner and it will take you to a page that shows when you last synced and allowed you to do it manual.

Also if you would have read the FAQ a little bit more you would have noticed this ..
I changed my avatar on Steam, why is my old one still in use by your site?

User data is automatically updated and synced on a regular basis, but you can force a sync to instantly update your avatar.

My point was if your so aware why do you need something to remind you and you imply the only way is to know is by dong a GA because you can not just check yourself.

Or in this case force a sync because maybe you added some games..here is the link so you do not have to move your mouse to your user name in the right hand corner

http://www.steamgifts.com/account/profile/sync

Yeah my reply might be a bit sarcastic, but you know how man people ask stuff that is in the FAQ and after awhile it just gets old answering the same things because someone is to lazy to be bothered reading.Yes i know you was asking why there could not be something to remind you to sync, that part was not the issue, the part is you imply it needed as the only other way to know you need to sync is by entering a GA which is not true.Sou your reason for needing it is due to not reading the FAQ and learning there is a way you can manually do it anytime.Or your to lazy to even click on your name and want something to remind you to click it and sync it. i still do not see why you would need to be reminded if you know that you can do it manual, then why not just sync it whenever you add games or change something?

My point was you can do it without entering a GA and by making your profile public then back to private or whatever after you sync yourself.A,so now you have the GA that reminds you and the option to do it yourself, and now you want a third one that reminds you to sync.

>>Still if you know you need to sync why would you need to be reminded
Knowing the fact that I need to sync and knowing whether I need to sync at a particular moment are two completely seperate things. Yes, I know I need to sync once a week, no I don't actually know which day I need to sync on. The site's not a big enough part of my life to remember such menial things, hence why I only find out I need to sync when I'm entering a GA.

>>i am aware i need to work,i do not ask work to call me to remind me to go work.
Ignoring that your comparison doesn't really work AT ALL, did you just compare Steamgifts to work? Really? Pls.

>>I changed my avatar on Steam, why is my old one still in use by your site?
Er, what? What does this have to do anything with avatars again?

>>It's in the FAQ
Again, do you even comprehend what's being asked here? I'm well aware how the sync mechanic works, and I'm not asking to change that. This has nothing to do with ANYTHING mentioned in the FAQ. And yes, good point about clicking on the username thing, although considering how this is related to being able to use the base mechanic of the site it still doesn't diminish the fact that having this on the main page would be way better UX than having either open a different page or click around the UI .

You're literally arguing against a few extra letters on the front page for a select amount of people for which this information matters (Try going a few months with a private profile while using SG, and you'll see the problem yourself) and that would take 5 minutes to implement (considering sanely written codebase).

I was not arguing but umm ok,and sorry that your life is so precious you can not even be bothered to take time to sync yourself.

I was just trying to help you with my first reply, sure maybe i did not need to be sarcastic you got me on that, but none the less your the one that brought up there is no other way to do and i pointed out a way just not one you like because your time is so precious then when you log into the site you can not manual sync it

Anyhow i will leave be Mr i have no time for this but yet i took the time to respond and that amount time you took you could have synced it yourslelf, anyhow my point was still clear you had other ways to do it other then joining a GA and yet you where still not happy with that

Once a week is all you have to yourself that is it,how hard is that,as long as you do it once a week it will not do it for you,so pick a fucking day and do it.

So you do comprehend that or what.?You tell me i do not comprehend yet you still do not see what the hell i was getting at

shrugs

This type of discussion is an argument :)

>>and sorry that your life is so precious you can not even be bothered to take time to sync yourself.
Are you even reading what I'm saying? I'm still syncing manually, there's no other way. Why do you seem to think that I'm complaining about the fact that I need to sync. I have said time and time again that this is not the case.

>>I was just trying to help you with my first reply
You misunderstood the issue (still do) , hence it wasn't helpful. Also you have no idea what sarcasm is, because in no way was that sarcastic in any form.

I'm sorry but I'm not going to continue this thread with you. You don't seem to understand the fundamental problem here and you seem to be making this a person problem and not an UX/Design problem which it is (which probably stems from the fact that "I don't use this feature, hence any problems with it is people being lazy since it does so for me automatically").

Exactly. Flaw is in the design. I mean, I see where cg was aiming at, like others have said, if you're not joining giveaways, what's the point of syncing..
But syncing also changes your avatar now, so there's that, at least 1 thing not related to giveaways.
I can't believe how ignorant evillurking can, it's really amazing..

i still don't know why you need a reminder in the home page.

if you wanna enter giveaways, you will be reminded to sync.
if you aren't entering giveaways, then why do you need to sync?

Last I checked this website was about the giveaways, everything else being optional. I would except to have some sort of information about not being able to join the giveaways somewhere that's instantly visible and not burried in a menu or after having clicked a GA (which ends up being the same as being burried in a menu from an UX design perspective).

I agree with the others, it is not a needed feature. One click from the main page will tell you whether or not you need to sync your account. If you compare that to it being buried in a menu then you could say the same thing about entering a giveaway, which affects everybody and much more frequently.
You could also do it simply by setting a time for you to sync, such as Sundays at midnight. Each Sunday at midnight, or the next time you come on after this time you will have to sync your account.
Last I checked, giveaways were also optional.

still, it's nothing compared to what you have to do in steam to make your profile public:
enter profile > edit > privacy > status: public > save.

compared to sg:
click on profile button > sync!

There are more important things I think for cg to work on, like fixing cv bugs. Maybe the dev for the Steamgifts plus would add your thing as a feature?

It's barely anything that would take much time away from any important bugs though. Unless their codebase is crappy, implementing something like this should take 10 minutes tops considering they already have front-page notifications for won giveaways. Of course I do agree that this shouldn't be on top of anyone's to-do list.

Sorry, but I just gotta say this. I get really annoyed at people who suggest things and then try to back it up with "It's just a small feature that will take no time at all to do", or "... should take 10 minutes tops...". Typically these types of comments come from people who have no clue what is involved in programming anything at all. Make your suggestion, but please don't act like you have any clue as to how long it will take to implement.

Fair point, it really is a strawman argument in a lot of ways. But to counter your point about not knowing anything about programming - I do full-stack webdev for living (Admittedly it's been ASP.NET w/ MVC for the longest time and not PHP, although I have work experience with that too) though.

Of course should they implement it I don't know how long it might take for them to do it since I don't know what their codebase is like, but in theory it should be just a single additional DB call based on which you just need to render the message (they already have the modal dialog for won giveaways, or they can just add a message on the top of the screen, which I believe is done in some places as well, so in the end you can just reuse already existing code un just put in different localised string variable. Honestly figuring out the design would be their biggest problem). It's literally that simple. ¯\(ツ)

You seem like an expert here. How about you share some knowledge with us, since op is right about it taking 10 minutes max.
Unless cg did some ultra messy code, it should be simple c&p at a proper place.

Don't understand.

It's already stunningly obvious when you try to click on the "enter giveaway" button that you need to sync....

It's honestly just 1 click faster, or 1 click less, you know what I mean.
Not a big deal, but it's a fair suggestion, nothing that hard to do, but could maybe be useful to somebody.
