Id rather prefer use seven than windows 10.... i so hated how they made their windows 8 , its like it force you to do things in a way, even if you don't want to, or trying to do it another way. It is supposed to be user friendly, while (per sonnaly) i only get trouble, less intuituve software etc etc... that metro style menu is what made me cry everytime, im stick with my good old seven until video games won't get supported on it.

Nice strategy of MS, saves a lot of money for them.

Update to Windows 10-M$ blocks possibility(eg via file or bios edit) to use pirate version of any Windows on YOUR PC>PROFIT:)

Wouldn't this have an opposite effect though? I mean, it's great that I'll be able to upgrade for free (because seriously, fuck paying through the nose every other year just to keep on top of the support wave), but wouldn't this also tempt people to pirate a copy of windows just to get a legit license of the most recent version?
As others have mentioned, it also makes me wonder if this is bait for a pirate crackdown. I unno.
Plus I'm also tempted to not upgrade. 7 is stable and I like it where it is, and upgrading the license would mean I no longer have a copy of 7, right? Hmmm.

XP is no longer supported though, so not sure why you would still run that. Vista, is a bit old and not many peeps still use it.

Maybe they should extend the offer to people running Windows 2000, Windows 95 or Windows 3.1 too?
XP was released thirteen years ago, and was replaced by Vista, height years ago. It's even been out of extended support for a year now.
Vista was released eight years ago and replaced by Windows 7, five years ago. Mainstream support ended three years ago.
You can't really expect them to upgrade people running antiquated software for free.
Anyway, if you want a free upgrade, you could just install a pirate copy of 7 or 8 and get the free upgrade, all with Microsoft's blessing.

Wait, is Microsoft taking a sensible approach to pirates and trying to cox them into the fold and eventually buy their products? O.o

I will clone my Windows 7 drive, and upgrade from there, but no chance I'll be jumping into that Windows 10 cess pool with no lifeline...

You have a whole year do to the upgrade, so it gives you time to assess the quality of the new release. (Having a backup plan is never a bad idea though.)

Windows 10 has built in key logging. So no thanks, I'll stick with my genuine Windows 7.

That's only in the tech preview. No one would get Windows 10 if it had a keylogger.

Why would you not be able to install your apps? It's not like you have to use the Microsoft store in the first place, even though they're counting on people buying from there to make a profit out of this move.

Basically, Windows will keep telling you that your license is not valid and they will offer no support if you have any issue. Kind of what they're doing with current versions. I guess they'd rather have pirates running the latest release and getting security patches than being the cause of malware spreading via old, unpatched releases.

My university has a contract with microsoft and i have every microsoft software for free, from windows 3.1 to windows 8 ~ everything less office

I'm using a pirated copy of Windows 7; only because the copy I own is an OEM upgrade from Vista and in order to install it I would first need to find my original OEM disc for Vista and install it (if I even still have it), then upgrade it with the Win7 disc. It was literally faster and cleaner to just download a torrent and burn it to a dvd.
As for the free upgrades for pirates, I'm skeptical. MS is probably being novel, it will just be a super shitty watered down Win10 or something. Or maybe it's just that 10 is going to be the TF2 of operating systems... in which case I'll stick to 7.

Another spokesperson confirmed that if you upgrade a non-genuine Windows copy it will remain non-genuine. Basically, they just don't want to keep issuing patches for the old OS so they're moving everyone on to the new version.

but not registered stays not registered after upgrade...
