So I have been visiting this Steam Group, Group Buys, every once in a while. In the group people can split their bundles and sell games for shared price to other members. It worked pretty well and it has been the only group I actively followed. When a new bundle got released and I didnt want to buy the whole bundle, I checked the group and tried my luck reserving games which I wanted.

2 days ago, just when the new Humble Bundle was released I checked the group since I wanted to buy only one game which was in the BTA tier and found this message on top of the group's discussions:
"You have been permanently banned from all Group Buys discussions. You have been banned by a forum moderator. Reason: "Multibuy isnt alowed.""

I was like, WTF!? I tried to contact the mods on Steam, one of them accepted my invite and I asked him to show me where I made a multi buy? He couldn't say and started his "investigation". then he said I have been asking for the same game (Spec Ops the Line) in more than one threads (which is common practice in the group, because you don't automatically get what you asked for the in the first time, some people post in the very same second as you do and the groups credo is first come first serve, so you're out if your posts is right after someone elses who requested the same game) and apparently I didnt activate it, which was not true either, so I told him to check my account again (not that there is any group rule that says you have to activate all games/bundles you bought on GB, but whatever dear mod). Then the guy claimed I was using multiple accounts. I was like WTF!? again. He asked me why I use the phone to contact him, I told him that I'm lying in bed and that using the steam app to chat with a steam member isn't a crime, but he interpreted it as an evidence that I must be fishy or something, and said to check back with him the next day, because he needed to ask another mod or something.

well then, the next day I got back to him again with my steam app (since I have guests at home this week, I dont sit on my pc for the whole evening as I usually do) and this guy was like: "ha, got you! - you're on the phone again and at the same time talking with me with your other account". I was once again like WTF!? This was enuff, I tried talking to him in a normal way, asking him to show me where I did go wrong, he couldn't and instead made up something. I basically told this wannabe Sherlock to go to hell (in a rude way) and if this is the way they manage their group, fine, then I will be using a different account to access the group in the future (I have enough ASF bot accounts) and unfriended this idiot.

I tried my luck with another mod right after that but it looks like he will not do anything about it either, since he will not interfere with the other mod's decision. So I'm fucked for nothing now.

I was never using multiple accounts. I was never buying any games twice in that group, I buy for me and not for reselling. they pretend as if I made multiple Indie Gala bundle Happy Hour reservations on several threads for reselling the games. my bundle leftover thread is here http://steamcommunity.com/groups/groupbuys/discussions/10/521643320352058628/ as you can see on page 4 I sold hundreds of games between May and September, because I made so many multi buys (this was irony if you didn't get it). There is actually no real way to tell if someone bought games multiple times UNLESS the seller states who they sold their games to in their first post (just saying!). I cannot prove shit, but they can't do either - and still I'm punished for nothing (and apparently another person is punished too, the person who the mod mistakenly thought to be me (or vise versa) when I talked to the mod yesterday). I can't do nothing about it now - all power to them.

Well life goes on, I will get over it (although I dont understand it, I always try to be fair and have clean rep / no bans etc.) and finish this chapter now, I'm wiser for the next time (not really since I did nothing wrong - I just wrote that last sentence because I needed a word with an x to complete the giveaway puzzle:).

Did you ever get punished for something you seriously did not do (in real life or online)? Share your story here and good luck to all who enter the giveaway.

BUMP WHEN SOLVED!

EDIT 2016-09-24:

I started a steam group just for fun to see what mods/admins can do. They certainly cannot see IPs so they cannot see whether someone uses multiple accounts like that mod said. Thanks for nothing mod. Mods can on the other hand see your post/history and what you deleted. As stated in the discussions here, I used to delete obsolete posts of requests where nothing came out of it rather than editing the posts, and now I see how that might have caused suspicion in my case. I didn't know that one shouldn't delete their posts, there is no such rule! A warning would have been more appropriate here.

I also learned that the group's admins do not really moderate the group anymore and only 2 mods are pretty much in charge of the group. Guess I have been in touch with the one who banned me then, and couldn't show me where I went wrong so he made up multi account accusations. I got this information from a friendly fella who has been in that group for 4 years.

Nevertheless, an admin reduced my ban to 30 days now, which is still too harsh but I can live with that, as I'm still uncertain whether to join that group again, knowing it is moderated buy some power hungry trigger-happy person.

I will leave this thread open for another 48hrs to give peps the chance to enter the giveaway.

Thanks to everyone who supported me in the past two days.

ok I see. They should really consider changing their rules/practices if they have someone like this guy in charge of managing users. E.g. they could warn users if it becomes apparent that they buy/bought a game twice (maybe mistakenly since they didnt read the rules?) instead of swinging the ban hammer immediatly. And they should force OPs by rule to state who they sold the games to, so it becomase apparent who bought what (and in which amount). Well this all won't help me anymore but it certainly would have proved that I did not buy shit twice.

I'm in the same geoup. The multibuy rule was invented for Indiegala reservstion threads so there wouldn't people reserving 4-5 cheap gala keys while other regular group attenders would get no entry at all. The context been lost it seems / the mod in charge overdid by far.

I know. It is totally fine to ask their users to buy games/bundles once. I totally agree with that. I remember I wanted to buy a game from the HB Bandai Namco bundle last year (Enslaved) and I always came too late (first come/first serve). there was always this guy, he probably bought the game for the 3rd or 4th time already, and he was right there once the game was for sale in the group. It was obvious the was buying it for reselling. I never managed to buy the game in Group Buys, I ended up buying the BTA at their highest price right before the bundle ended. so 1 bundle/1game per user is totally okay with me...

also I think you have to put the 1 game per user rule into context. I see nothing wrong buying a game twice if the game has been bundled serveral times already, or if there are more than enough sale offers for it. sometimes you want to get it for a friend and dunno. it is a different story if it is a AAA title from a BTA tier and a user acquired 5 copys... that's multi buying for you....

If we go by level it should be something like level required to make thread for bundle split 7+ or even 8+ and to post on threads lvl 2+ or 3+.

As for rep would be better to go for like 200+ rep to make thread aka host and to enter ~100+ but I'd prefer levels over rep :)

Well, no. You definitely always know whether you're the first asking for a certain game in a certain thread. If you are, you don't ask for the same game in other threads. I wouldn't ban you, but you were doing wrong.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

if you don't get a response in a reasonable amount of time and other threads pop up all the time it is fine to ask elsewhere and delete your other request again or say you got it elsewhere already. simple as that. others have been doing this and it's what I have been doing also. and yet it still does not proove that you are a multi buyer. if it was wrong they could have send me a warning.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Others doing something wrong doesn't make it right. It's a poor practice to delete your post, just edit them and explain you're not interested anymore. This said, I would also have issued a warning instead of a ban, especially if it was the first "clash with the law". Was it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

as said i did it all the time, since i didn't buy multiple copies and others did the same I never seen anything wrong with that. if deleteing a post should not be allowed, I think steam group admins/mods can disable this function(?). still a warning would have been nice though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Again, if you did it all the time, you should have been warned and informed that it's not an acceptable practice. From zero feedback to a ban is not proper treatment.

Unfortunately, no one can disable the post deletion function: this doesn't mean it's ok to do it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You have to ask in multiple threads as it happens all the time sellers give it to a multibuyer, a friend or simply decide not to buy the bundle they are splitting after all. The even give it to someone else sometimes only because you do not respond to their invite in 2 min just because you are sleeping. To get a game it's mandatory to ask on different threads otherwise you end up with none.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You certainly don't have to and it's definititely not mandatory. It's bad behaviour that harms the community (just like not giving enough time to buyers to reply and deleting your posts). I never had to ask for the same game in multiple threads and I always got my games when due. I'm no fan of authority but this kind of behaviour has to be fought.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's clear we have total different experiences. I'm glad to hear you have only good ones. I'm don't see why this has to be fought though as I don't see anything wrong with it. Eventually you got your game somewhere, politely say you have it already in the other threads and most of the time there is already someone else that signed up in case someone backs out. What's wrong with that? In at least 60% of the times I was first to reply in a post it went to someone else. That is bad behaviour and should be fought in my opinion! Not the people that just try to buy a game they want.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What's wrong is that people like me will not ask for a game if someone else already asked before them. If the behaviour you're promoting became widespread, we would find ourselves in a queue system and it would be more complicated, less reliable and harder to manage for everyone. Plus, you talk about "politely saying" you already got the game, but many people just delete their posts and I don't think I need to explain why it's a problem.

Now back to your case, 60% is a lot and very far from my experience. Are you able to breakdown that number by reason? This is certainly another issue that has to be tackled.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most of the times I did not get a game I asked for was because hours later someone else wanted to make a multi buy and creator found it much easier to deal with only 1 person. The second common reason is people giving it to friends after they put it up for sale or deciding to keep it for themselves after all. The not buying it after all, sometimes after days only occurs by one user. I know his name by now so I avoid him. Only in case of emergency with highly wanted games I will give it a shot knowing I most likely will not receive it. Please do not ask for his name as I don't want to tell on him. The only thing I wanted to express is why the hate for people just trying to buy a game instead of looking at the reasons people do it. Of course there will be a few bad apples, they are everywhere but the majority of the people are just nice, friendly people trying to buy a game they want.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks for your reply. It's not a matter of hate: the behaviour you're discussing is detrimental to the community and I consider it wrong and, when deleting posts, hostile. This said, it looks like it's the wrong answer to a real problem, so I agree that the underlying issue should be tackled too (and first). I just don't get people who give priority to multi-game purchases (how lazy can you be??), but I'm afraid it's gonna be hard to prevent. And when it's Paypal priority... just pay with Paypal, if you want to be sure to get the game. But generally speaking, I don't like this whole "priority" thing. Expressing a preference, ok, but skipping people because of these reasons, no.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I once couldnt buy a game because paypal was having issues the moment i was trying to pay (i couldnt log in if memory serves). the issue was resolved in 15 minutes but by this time the seller sold the game to another guy because the other guy was willing to buy 2 more games from him along with the one i wanted. that much to "first come first serve". I could have reported the seller but so fucking what? we're talking about bundle games here, no need to be anal, even if I was disappointed and couldnt get the game anymore (was wasteland 2 from a HB monthly) I didn't feel like reporting him.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So did the seller give the game to someone else because of that tiny payment delay or because the other person was interested in several games? In any case, I don't approve the seller's behaviour. The way I see it, this "buy more games, skip the queue" has to go.

I agree we don't need to be anal about bundle games, but then... do we really need to post in a dozen threads to be 100% sure to get the game? :)

Comment has been collapsed.

I see nothing wrong with backing off a reservation (or deleting a request thread if the seller did not even confirm any reservation) if you get a better/earlier deal before the OP manages to deliver/get back in a reasonable time. People are backing off from HH reservations all the time, so what? deleting obsolete posts may be a bad practice but it is not a rule to don't delete your posts. yes i admit i deleted a post every once in a while if nothing came out of it to avaid having to back off later on when the seller is back online again, if i got that game already from another thread/another source/or from the bundle itself because I bought it. so f*cking what? you have to see the context, it's not like I posted a request for the same game in 10 threads simultanously. I did max 2-3 threads if there was no result after a bunch of time, should I stick to one thread and wait 1 week before one replies? seller's can pick whom they sell to (priority lists by payment method), why can't buyers decide where they buy from as long as they play by the rules of not buying multiple times?

I have an interesting story for everyone here, especially for you!

I'm pretty sure you'd be able to find some people who'd be interested and there's no rule that says that there can't be another group like that on Steam. Personally, I wouldn't mind helping out with a group like that either because there's been plenty of times when I wanted to get a game from a bundle but wasn't interested in the rest of it and therefore didn't buy it.

yeah, this was already suggest here https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/EuTTwFn and I considered it already. I will think about it again when I have the spare time this weekend I might consider doing a similar group...

You do realise that this kind of group only works when it has got enough members.
And a lot of members require a lot of moderation.
In short: It will take a lot of your free time when you want to run a proper group.
I would prefer actual gaming myself ;)

I do realize this and this is a big problem. but if I made a invite only group, where people with hight rep or high SG levles/ratios can enter and you get a bunch of folks together + some (non nazi / anal) mods it could work.

But that would then make it an elitist group and I'm not sure if that's a good idea. I mean, sure, it would limit the amount of people in the group and might make it easier to manage but I think that the purpose and focus of a group like that should be to give everyone the opportunity to get games they'd like to have not just those who already have everything or can afford to buy just about every bundle to then offer the games they don't want for trade or sale on there, don't you think? Personally, I'm strongly against closed elitist groups because, in my opinion, everyone deserves a chance.

you're right. I didnt think far enough in this instance. groups should be for everyone. well. there is a group buy group already, it would be hard to cope with that. guess i will leave this idea aside

Wait, can we no longer buy the same game more then once on group buys?

I'm not talking about complete bundles, just the individual games?
