We're working on new rules right now, sit tight if you're waiting to join - we'll open a new thread shortly :)

This thread was opened to introduce the group Backlog Assassins Extraordinaire, or BLAEO for short. This is what we do:

  • Play our backlog-games [mostly focusing on SG wins first]
  • Post about our progress in dedicated threads and here on SG on our brand-new website O.O (thanks to mandrill!)
  • Possibly sometimes share giveaways (this is not a GA group, there are no ratio requirements or any expectations of GAs)
  • Play games based on monthly themes

What you need to have if you'd like to join us:

  • An SG account
  • A Steam account with unfinished games (i.e., a Steam backlog)
  • A willingness to work on your backlog

Requirement to stay in the group:
Please set up your backlog plan in your profile on our website and sort your games there, or post your progress thread in our Steam forums sometime within 3 weeks of joining - otherwise we may think you're not serious about your backlog and may ask you to leave the group ^^
Reply to this post if you'd like to join. Feel free to ask questions about the group here as well - I can't promise any answers, but I'll do my best.

We recently started excluding inactive members (no posts or organizing their profiles on the website since joining 4 weeks ago or earlier). If you feel we've made mistake excluding you, please post here with your reason(s) or contact us in the group's chat.

I'm game, already done with 4 of the 6 wins I got at the SimGive event last month, and in the middle of completing the 5th - Borderlands. However as usual Steamgifts keeps giving me more games, so backlog isn't shorted than when I started LOL!

I started following revilheart's Marathon (linked up there somewhere) and only entering a set amount of new GAs after completing old wins, works quite well for reducing the SG-backlog (but gets really frustrating when several wishlist GAs are up and I don't have time finish anything new XD)

Alright, I have the computer parts picked out, I have the money; I'm just waiting for a good deal to save money and the thought of mind to get second opinions though I'm positive after fixing the build (a few days ago to accommodate the new Skylake) it should be fine.

Nearly 350 hours logged against Skyrim, and I hadn't even done the fighter's guild quest line or even started on the Dragonborn DLC.

I had it sitting on my hard drive, still installed, with hundreds of mods since I stopped playing last spring, thinking to myself I was going to play it again soon. But then I had to face reality and just a few weeks ago I deleted every last bit of it. Not just the game, but all my configured modding tools, everything!

As much as I love that game, there's so many others out there to play!

(I think I freed up about 50 GB of space too.)

I've got a humongous backlog that I'm slowly working on. I'm not a fan of progress threads, though, so unfortunately I'm out if I'm required to have one.
I'd be more liable to post in some sort of group master thread, where members can post whenever they complete a game or something.

Permalink

The thread requirement is mainly about weeding out possible leechers (it's a small group with basically no entry requirements), you don't have to update it (I haven't updated mine in ages) - in fact, as soon as that's sorted, revilheart will make some room for you in his SG thread here, where you can post whenever you have something to post :) (of course you can also just reply there without joining the group, but then you might miss some interesting posts in the group forums ;) )

weeding out possible leechers

why I wonder, didn't read anything about GAs and isn't making them only going to increase the backlogs and thus actually going against the group's intention xD

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not sure if you saw it, but I added that note to the OP later ("this is not a GA group, there are no ratio requirements or any expectations of any GAs"). "Possible leechers" in this case refers to people who join groups only to gain access to group giveaways, without any intention of participating in the group as intended. I've seen group threads on here with very straightforward rules ("at least level 4" etc.), and still people who clearly haven't reached that yet apply. While we don't require or actively encourage giveaways, they're not forbidden and the group has been included in shared GAs already.
For example, I posted a GA (for a very short game), shared with this group, my whitelist, and 2 or 3 other groups with stricter entry requirements. This group would be by far the easiest way to get in, since we don't have any requirements regarding SG profiles, so anyone who replies here with "I'm interested" gets in. To prevent people from joining these GAs, we require the one thing of them this group is meant for - share their backlog progress, or at least show that they're trying. Of course it's not a fool-proof plan, people could still leech for the first few weeks, or just post a placeholder thread, but then again, I don't expect that much GA activity for this to become a huge problem.
I hope that answers that? ^^

Like nelly said, the group sort of has a master thread, but it's here on SG - this one. My idea is for everyone to keep a short summary of their progress there, so if you don't want to make a thread in the group, just let me know and I'll reserve a section for you.

We've made the forums visible to the public now, so if you want you can check out some progress threads and see if you can manage that (or less, there's no rules about how much info you put in there). If you want to join, let us know here. As mentioned in the OP, you can update it (or not) whenever you want, or you can just post your updates in revil's thread if you're more comfortable with that.

Doing my best but I'm a completitionist as well. Today's humble bundle makes me cry because I already own Far Cry 3, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Grow Home and Call of Juarez and I've finished CoJ only (which was very nice).
I've even made categories in my library like: completed, playing, must play and so on but all those bundles and sales.... I guess backlogs are meant to grow up only.

Hi there! I'm here to remind you that you've been in BLAEO for over 4 weeks now and haven't posted your thread yet. We also have a shiny new website now, where you can organize your Steam backlog and post about your progress. (Click here for a neat guide to get started.)
If you haven't shown any interest in being part of and participating in the group by at least

  • organizing your backlog on the website and/or
  • posting your backlog strategy in your website profile and/or
  • posting a thread on our Steam forum

by next week (30. March), we will have to let you go from the group.

Sounds like a fine group! While most of my backlog admittedly comes from not having time to play games, the sad truth is that there's also the "meh" lazyness behind it, so getting a kick from people in the same situation would be beneficial. But damn, all those tables look too complicated for me to handle. :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep the tables are a bit tedious ... but it's totally fine if you just use something simple (e.g. bulleted lists) in your backlog thread. Making it more complicated is completely up to you :) (There probably maybe will be something easier/automated for all the tracking ... soonish ... but I shouldn't tease this too much :P)

I really like the initiative to encourage people to play their games, but I dislike the term 'backlog'. I know it's standard vernacular these days, but it still connotes something akin to a chore, unpleasant task, or work -- and I hate thinking of my games in that fashion. I much prefer to think of my catalog of games as treasures which are to be savored.

Apologies for the rant, I don't mean to detract from your group as I really do dig the sentiment and purpose which is to encourage people to play and enjoy their games. It's just I can see some potential for people to plow through their games for the sake of completion as opposed to actual enjoyment.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. Well, we won't "demand" progress from anyone, so in the end, everyone still has to decide for himself what "progress" is for him/her. I wouldn't want anyone to think of this as a chore.
For me personally, I really like the idea of treasures to be savored, but there are just so many treasures and I tend to get distracted by a second one before I finish the first ... I really enjoy completing / crossing out / exhausting those treasures, and to that end, I sometimes have to force myself to focus. Yeah, it would be sad if that would feel like "forced labor" ;)

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it's up to each person and/or context to perceive "backlog" as something negative, see possible definitions here. I think the original meaning, "something stored up for later use", fits quite well. In the context of Steam games and this forum, it's quite neutral to me, leaning towards positive, and simply means "games I own but haven't played/finished yet", or even "games I own and want to play, but haven't yet" - not even counting bundle fillers I added to my library before I knew about this site, which would be tiring to play. I usually don't race through games just to finish them (what would be the point?), which is actually one of the reasons I like being in a group like this - it reminds me every now and then to go back and finish something, instead of starting the next interesting game, because having a ton of unfinished games to me is even worse than having a ton of never played games (at least there I don't know what I might be missing). So, in conclusion, I agree with you about the reason for playing our games, and like mandrill said, no one is forcing anyone to progress at a speed other than their own. (I hope no one feels like we do that :/)

Also, I realize I wrote "work" in the title of the thread, but that's more because it's idiomatic (to me), probably due to the origin/main use of "backlog" referring to unfinished work.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! Again, I must apologize, my post was really more or less a personal rant on the wide acceptance and usage of the term "backlog" in modern-day gaming vernacular. I think my disdain for the term stems from my own struggles with feeling overwhelmed by the abundance of titles I have in my collection, and so I prefer to eschew the term due to its sarcastic overtones and use something with a more directly positive or neutral etymology instead.

I do think your group is a wonderful idea and hope that it helps many people, and I wish you much success with it. :)

Maybe I can work in finish first, then work in to do Perfects games

It's up to you to decide what "progress" is for you ... the "original three" of us went for "main story completion", and we prioritize SG wins (you don't have to many of those, yet ;) ... but if you want to try and get 100% in "second runs" as much as possible, feel free to do so! (I try to do that sometimes myself, but mostly for games I enjoyed so much that I want the last bit out of them ;)

Oh, and ... invite sent.

I love to do achievements, 'cause this I decided to do perfects games as much as I can this year. I'm far from do all my games (yet), just 10 games 100% for now
And yes, I don't have much games from SG yet, just three (currently playing Silence of Sleep, and instaled Hacker Evolution Source Code (ins't the full game actually))
Edit1: I have a category called "Not Finished" in my Steam and another "Finished", this way, I can track games that I still need to play
Others categories are "Multiplayer", "Instaled" and "100 - Perfect game"

Comment has been collapsed.

The "art guy" is one reason I'm now trying to work with RPG Maker. I came to a realisation at some point that I can use free graphics to create gameplay and that's a huge step towards actually finding if it's fun. That way even if I do need an art guy, finding one will be at a point where I already have a game.

Programming at work never really prevented me from programming at home, but having a family does get in the way, as well as being naturally lazy. :)
