And, too, some people don't like drinking water, so wouldn't the glass's being half empty be optimism from their perspective? Even moreso, I think people say it's half full or empty pretty casually; I doubt that they really put thought into how they feel about how they phrase that the glass is half water and half air. It's one of those "philosophical conundrums" (and those quotes are all air; no water) that people waste too much time pondering.
