They were forced to close up shop because of poor sales. It turns out artsy games, even when you try to make them appeal to a larger audience, don't sell that well.

Yeah, you can't sell artsy projects the same price you would an AA game. From what I've gathered, they went to the wrong people for advices.

Same, bought in the summer sale to support the devs. Didn't have a chance to play it yet but I've already idled for the cards.

Forgive me if I sound ignorant, but can anyone explain to me why there are so many bad reviews for "Sunset"? I'm looking at the game's Steam page but so far, the majority of what I see are thumbs-down ratings.

To me it sounds like people who are hating on that kind of games go on their Steam page to upvote negative reviews.

I think that in this particular case it's a result of the drama around shut down of Tale of Tales. From what I've gathered so far, they've hired Leigh Alexander for PR work and some people got enraged by that and their final statement/blogpost (but I personaly don't see anything wrong with it) = people upvoting to show their dissaproval.
It's what I understood from the situation, but I've always had problem with comprehending dramas when I'm not witnessing them live, haha

I read up on some of the drama and it seems that people are enraged not only by Tale of Tale's shutdown, but by the poor quality of the game ... To take it from the words of the developers, they tried to create a "game for gamers" but ultimately "failed" [to meet people's expectations]. I'm a new gamer, so I don't know too much about how to evaluate the quality of games (which I suppose is very subjective). Although I can understand people may be upset because of the company's shut-down and perhaps that there would be no more further improvements to Tale of Tale's games, but I wonder if the quality of their games (Sunset in particular) is that bad? Maybe it's not suited for a large population of gamers, but I'm sure it resonated well with a small minority of people in that genre.

It looked and played like a game made by 2-5 people. Not sure what people were expecting. I encountered no bugs or glitches and it ran fine so the quality was about where I expected it I guess.

There are a lot of sad little angry people out there that like to bash things they know they won't like and/or punishing people for being upset that their careers and dreams have died.
I backed the Kickstarter because I like weird experimental and story based games. While it clearly didn't have the polish of a game made by more than a handful of people, I found it oddly compelling. There are some really interesting design decisions that paid off and there are some things that could have been better. Basically if the premise piques your interest then you'll probably enjoy it.

Don't listen to the Tale of Tales bashers, it's pretty much just misplaced indignation. I found Sunset compelling and enjoyable. Certainly not my favorite game ever but something I may play again at some point. If you like narrative games with some elements of choice/branching path then probably worth it.

It's just that almost all of the games from the bundle are of high quality so it's weird to me that someone would say it's "bad" ;P
