Just a quick friendly reminder to everyone : The holiday sales are creeping ever closer, so now is the time to get your wishlists in order!

Not all of us are blessed with friends or family who snipe our wishlists for gift ideas, but don't forget that the titles you have wishlisted influence the popularity rankings of games that people may consider giving away. Now is the best time to do some tidying up of your list. Games that you actually aren't too enthusiastic about could maybe be cleaned off, and the games that you are most hyped for could maybe be shuffled higher in the order. It sounds like a chore but you never know if a buddy is going to surprise you.

With the changes to the steam marketplace and gifting restrictions, I appreciate that there is some grumpus to go around, and without inventory storage the variety of holiday giveaways isn't quite as massive as it used to be, but try not to let it get to you. There's still that chance you'll land a lucky win, right?

Optional discussion to keep thread bumped :
Some people can be hard to buy gifts for. If you are considering directly gifting something to a steam buddy (or hell, just struggling for ANY gift ideas even away from steam or even gaming), throw a reply with what you generally have in mind and we'll see if we can't help suggest something!

Is your steam wishlist in order?

View Results
Always, I don't want to risk missing a perfect gift!
Mostly, but I should adjust it before I forget
Not yet, but I'll get around to it before the sales hit.
No, I add too much stuff out of habit.
No, I just can't muster the time or energy.
Nah, I don't order them by how much I want them
My wishlist is empty / too small.

I'm more like into searching for a game to add into my wishlist. My buddies have given me coal so far, instead of gifts. :B

Yeah, me too. Though once your wishlist gets big enough, people need to refer to the list itself to figure out how much you want it (compared to other titles).

I've seen some people use the wishlist as a way to track games that have been bundled, so sometimes that little mark on the store page that says "This user wishes for this game" can't be relied upon. There's nothing worse than firing off a gift to a friend only to have it declined with a "Oh crap, I forgot I had this on my list!". Especially when there is some crossover with places like GoG. By that point, the surprise is already given away, and they can start negotiating against you to stop you from spending money on them!

So tricky!

Indeed. People don't understand the utility of the wishlist feature. I have given some games to my friends and they hardly even play them. :'( Thing is, how to find games to add into my wishlist? Steam always suggests me shitty games that I'd never play.

It's usually down to luck really. Redeeming too many bundle games can really throw the suggestion radar of the storepage off the scent. It doesn't help when you like a bit of everything too, heh.

Best way might be to just watch the sales and use the discovery queue to find new things to ponder?

I've already told you that steam suggests me shitty games. xD

From my experience, playing a game similar to what you wish for can edge the algorithm to reco, mend something you might like, though I guess it works better with anime stuffs than the rest of the tags.

Have you checked the community wishlist?

Yep. Well, not all of it, but a few pages. :P Some of them look bad to me, others just aren't interesting, others are games that I already have, etc.

I always keep it in order of how much I want them, though I'm usually lazy to sort new additions right away.

Thanks to this thread I checked my whishlist. Went from 10 positions to 6, thanks. In my family presents go mostly to kids, so I don't have a reason to keep it updated.
PS: OP, what's the point of free software (Blender) on your wishlist?

While I can't speak for Uro, I've Blender on my wishlist just 'cause my interests are primarily in 2D art, but I want to keep Blender in mind for if I ever decide to dabble around with 3D; since adding the license doesn't actually add it to library (and thus makes it easy to forget about), wishlist is an easier way to keep track of it until I actually want to install it.

Like Sooth said, it's more a reminder to myself that a thing exists, and that I should play around with it sometime. My wishlist usually gathers all kinds of stuff and then I filter through all of it before big sales hit. I usually wishlist free games when they act as prequels to games I might buy later, etc.

I just spent an hour or so re-arranging and clearing out my wishlist. Wish there was an easier way to do it X.x I think the first 20 games or so are actually somewhat in order.... ummm, maybe? xD

one day when i reached over 200 games on my wishlist i came to the conclusion that i might have a problem
and to solve it i made a guideline for myself to cut it below 100 games
if at any point it exceeds 100 games i will look trough my wishlist and cut out as many games i possibly can
and since then it haven't gone above 70 games and that way its lot more manageable
my new guideline is 80 games by the way
the priority order is mostly in check
and then there is a few upcoming games that might not even turn out good.
sorry for the big wall of text.

No worries. I usually write humongous posts once I get typing, heh.

If your wishlist gets too long, you could always move some items onto your 'follow' list in the store page, if you don't mind getting the occasional prompt when a new news post goes up. I use the follow listing as a kind of backup wishlist but mostly for early access titles or things I'm not sure about

I only need to sort the list and shuffle the numbers around a bit based on my current priority. Maybe I will get some time tonight. Thank you for the reminder :)

I have way too many VNs in my wishlist, while my play time is mostly on JRPG... Not going to clean them up, though, since I would like to grab them if they ever go on deep sale in the future.

I know that feeling. I have quite a few games that I'm interested in but only if they go on bigger discounts. That's why I started making sure the games I want most urgently are at the top of the list, with my "sometime eventually" sorta games go straight to the bottom. The real problem is deciding which of those VNs you want the most
