Darksiders 3 has been leaked on Amazon (first reported by Gematsu). The leak shows several screenshots as well as some information about the upcoming game.

The listing on Amazon revealed that players will be playing as Fury, a mage who uses a whip and magic to restore the balance between good and evil on Earth. Fury is described as “the most unpredictable and enigmatic of the Four Horsemen”. In the first two games players played as War and Death respectively.

The leak goes on to say that Fury will have various forms, each will grant her access to new weapons, moves and abilities. The main storyline will focus on Fury defeating the Seven Deadly Sins and their servants in a post apocalyptic environment.

You can check out the leaked screenshots below

I was just thinking the same thing, I wonder what's better publicity - a normal announcement or a leak? Personally I think I'll be more likely to check out a forum thread if it says "[game] leaked" than "[game] announced", for some reason... which leads me to consider than maybe a leak does attract more attention.

It surely attracts more attention. For now. Because we'll get used to the word leaked and it will mean for us exactly the same as announced soon :D

Finally! Another Darksiders game!

Somehow I feel this game won't sell enough copies though. The publisher will state, it did not "meet sales expectations". :(

Maybe the female protagonist might widen the target demographic.

If the gender of the protagonist is something that defines or affect the target demographic it's more likely to be narrowing the same.

What I meant is that fans of the first 2 games will most likely buy the 3rd game anyway. It should be interesting to play as a Horsewoman of the Apocalypse!

However, more girl gamers or those wanting more female protagonists will likely buy this game, even though they may not have purchased the first two.

Ah, so you're arguing that guys are less affected by the gender of the protagonist. Maybe, but probably not.

I'll keep my eye on it. I thought Darksiders 1 was really good, but Darksiders 2 proved that longer is not always better...

Whip(-like movement)s are so overdone in these games by now, but a female lead and the seemingly gorgeous art style and backdrops seem like a fun direction to go in. '7 different forms' seems a bit more worrisome, since that high a number of stances (assuming they're not a linear progression of upgrades) generally means less polish per stance and more mental clutter as you manage them.

And then there's the fact that we may once again end up getting a Deathinitive Edition style mess when it comes to PC..
(I'm still rather irked that I no longer can get the DLCs for the original version, with its richer graphics, and its purportedly more functional camera and more stable gameplay.. -.-)

Yea, they messed up Darksiders II (I still want to get the DLC for it too...), but I guess they learned from it and the Warmaster edition of the first game turned out better then the original.

Also, shame on me I guess :P

Edit: Assuming you didn't just put it in there, how does a female lead make for a fun direction to go in?

how does a female lead make for a fun direction to go in?

At the most foundational level, it's a matter of rarity. Same as with having a child lead- they're unusual. The gaming industry not only overwhelmingly favors teen to adult male leads, they've repeatedly and openly spoken out on that preference (often with their bigotry only thinly disguised, thus undermining any companies that actually did only look to market preference for their decision). With either character trait above, the novelty (and for some, being able to better identify with the similarities of the character) is the basic driving factor [ie, the element that applies in a game where gender distinction is purely cosmetic] in providing appeal.

Past that, however, if the game can play to the strengths of the design choice, then it becomes all the more compelling- that, of course, is true regardless of the gender and age [and ethnicity and religion and species and so forth] choice of the character, but moving past the typical cardboard copy 'macho male' hero persona into more complex character identities is always a plus [for those of more discerning tastes], and quite frankly, that's just easier to do (though, admittedly, also easier to screw up) when basing around a character trait more commonly associated with vulnerability. (Add in that females compose oh, roughly half of humanity, only individuals of dubiously singular perspectives wouldn't take interest in more balanced gaming perspectives- again, if only because it expands what gaming experiences are available to us.)

A weak male protagonist coming into his own could be just as compelling (and some novels, anime, etc have proven that), but typically that setup devolves into the usual power fantasy dynamic- and still isn't the same story that'd be told with a female protagonist. Likewise, may as well ask why a LGBT individual would make for an interesting protagonist: The trait may be superficial, and it may be a shallow marketing gimmick- or it could be an interesting component of the character's story, thus expanding their depth as a character.
For example, if a male had the characteristics of Lara Croft (Tomb Raider 2013) more simple-minded players would have found the protagonist unappealing, due to the open vulnerability and developing strength of will the character showed- but, by making the character female, the same story was told in a way that made it appealing to more players. In other words, part of the character's appeal is the possession of feminine characteristics, and those are typically only agreeable to players when told with a female being associated with them. Thus, by virtue of having a female character, we got shown a story we fairly assuredly wouldn't have been shown otherwise.
Jade from Beyond Good & Evil is another well-known female protagonist who actually has appeal due to how subtly feminine characteristics are expressed- those subtleties, combined with avoiding overt displays of masculinity, make for a distinct character (who manages to prove that regardless of gender, humans are equally capable of being strong protagonists).

In any case, think of it like a game having optional stealth mechanics: Some players may feel the inclusion took focus away from the rest of the game, others may love having the option, and others may just play through ignoring the fact. Basically, your question has a pretty blatant answer: Everyone has different preferences, and catering to a niche is always an interesting trait of a game [though, as with everything else, it won't necessarily be a trait that appeals to everyone. Of course, in this case, presumably the majority of the people to whom it actively doesn't appeal will not be worth much consideration as human beings].

But, honestly, not a single one of the overall considerations matters here, because there's an even more obvious answer:
Because it's interesting to the lore of the series, and to the concept of the Four Horsemen in general, to have a female inclusion. Maybe it won't amount to anything of note, but maybe it'll expand the concepts of the universe a bit- and that, presumably, is a fun thing to have occur [for those interested in the series].

how does a female lead make for a fun direction to go in?

tl;dr answer:
Well, how does having a female lead in a band make for a [potentially] fun direction to go in? The outcome of the inclusion can change the band only on a superficial level, but it can also completely reshape the tone of what they offer. Either result will find those individuals to whom the change appeals.
(And, to tie into my last point in the previous section, there's something interesting about having a traditionally one-gender group suddenly include someone of a different gender.. in fact, that's the entire concept driving stories such as AKB-49.)

I do love your long posts but woe those who are trying to have a discussion with you :P
Everything you wrote basically boils down to its fun because you like it that way, which is totally fine by me. I am however a bit confused about this part:

Everyone has different preferences, and catering to a niche is always an interesting trait of a game [though, as with everything else, it won't necessarily be a trait that appeals to everyone. Of course, in this case, presumably the majority of the people to whom it actively doesn't appeal will not be worth much consideration as human beings]

Are you saying that people not sharing your enthusiasm for female leads are not worth much consideration as human beings? This would explain a few things but it almost seem too outlandish for me to even suggest.

Exact same wording as I used before, except simplified to be less subtle.

No, it's fun because it's inherently interesting, and I don't dislike it that way.
There's a pointed difference between that sentiment and the one you just expressed.

According to the Darksiders mythos the 4 horsemen are: Death, Fury, Strife, War

I'd interpreted them as
Passionate Combat, Calculated Combat, and Honorable Combat, myself.

In RPG terms, perhaps Barbarian, (Ranger? Tactical Combat Fighter?), and Knight.

Given that the biblical/world-influencing references aren't part of Darksiders, and the names are more titles or nicknames for specific members of a larger race of beings than promises of earth-shattering ruin, it makes more sense to have the characters be based within more [class-based] personal conceptions of the names.

Pestilence

However, whenever the Four Horsemen concept appears in popular culture, the first horseman is most often identified as Pestilence instead. This identification with disease is due to the horseman carrying a bow, whose arrows were identified with Apollo and Artemis. In Greek mythology, illnesses were believed to be caused by their arrows.
Due to the misconception of Conquest and War having influence over similar domains, modern conceptualizations have attempted to distinguish between the riders by reinterpreting the first rider as Pestilence.

The four horsemen are, by classic terminology, Conquest, War, Famine, and Death.

I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.”
“Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.”
“...and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, ‘A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!’”
“I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.”

While it's unclear if the domains of the riders are actually intended to be specific to the riders (versus shared between them, or exclusive to the final rider), plague is classically associated with the coming of the Horseman of Death, while Conquest is interpreted to be the Anti-Christ, being a manipulator of mankind, turning humanity against itself.

The classic domain associations are, respective to the rider order above:
[Religious/Political] Deception, War, Famine and Poverty, and Calamity [composing Plague and Natural Disasters].

In other words, first comes deception and manipulation, which leads to war, which leads to famine and poverty. By this point, classically, the dead contribute to the spreading of plague, as the civilized world tears itself asunder. From a modern perspective, we can assume nuclear armageddon as the final element (which would spread both plague-like [radiation] disease and natural destruction [as Revelations specifically indicates earthquakes, something nukes are known to trigger].
Similarly, pigmentation loss [specifically, Vitiligo, the same thing that Michael Jackson was known to have had] is a known [via the circumstances post-Chernobyl children] potential side-effect of radiation poisoning, and we are talking about a pale horse and rider..

Basically, the traditional arrangement is less mystical fancy, and more a guidebook to the top-down nature of how any large-scale conflict originates and leads to ruin.

From the perspective of Darksiders, Fury rides a black horse, so she substitutes for Famine- so there's pretty much no correlation of context there, but I assume "Fury" made for a more compelling protagonist than a set of powers based around starving and weakening your opponents. :P

Strife rides a white horse, so even if process of elimination wasn't at play, they're a clear substitution for Conquest- and really, Strife seems as adequate a name for the traditional domain of that rider that this one seems to be more a change of nuance and use of a more intuitive term for modern clarification of the rider's scope.

I am curious if they will return to the great oldschool system from Darksiders 1 or if they will continue with the trash looter flavour of the year abortion of a mumbo jumbo system they used in Darksiders 2. Loved Darksiders 1, couldn't stand playing Darksiders 2 more than 3-4 hours till I gave up on the game.
