I really like Shogun 2, but more the managing a clan and conquering stuff, I usually autoresolve the battles...

So is there anything not too expensive like Total War ? and I'm not talking about other Total War games...

I was thinking maybe Europa Universalis 3?

The great four are; Crusader Kings, Europe Universalis, Victoria and Hearts of Iron. (made in order what times they cover)

King Arthur

Unfortunately King Arthur is exactly the opposite of what the author of the thread wants. It focuses on the battles and the economic strategy is reduced to a minimum. And even the battles are not that great, at first the spells feel like an interesting twist to the Total War style, but later they turn the battles into a mess that has nothing in common with tactics.

Any paradox grand strategy is a good choice. Hearts of war. Europa universalys. Crusader kings. Victoria. These are realtime strategy games. just like tw. But there is no 3d battle. Only the autoresolve stuff. And the gameplay on the map is more advanced than in any tw game.
So buy one. from the era you like.
Note in crusader kings you control a family/dynasty not a country.

Triple Town seems to fit your description perfectly. Also Viva Piñata.

I couldn't possibly be more serious. How come no one is ready to embrace the strategic depth of Viva Piñata?

Crusader Kings 2 is pretty nice! It has no battle, that you can command but it main part of the game relies on Management and relations.
And there is a supermod for Game of Thrones, if you like GoT you definatly will ahve fun :D

Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom wars seems like a good Total war-like strategy game.

Sounds like you'd enjoy any Civ since you auto most battles. I've been playing Crusader Kings II recently and loving that, but be warned, its has a VERY steep learning curve, also conquering stuff is not a main objective of the game so if you just like world domination it may not be the game for you.
