is anyone else annoyed by the amount of time it takes for a dev/featured giveaway to end???

i mean seriously it should be a first come first served and deserved thing, giving away 50 or 500 or 1000 of a game, should only last under a day

just within the first 10 hours there will be 5 to 10 thousands entries........

and within 4 days there will be 15 to 20 thousand....

see thats not fair at all, there is only 50 or 100 or blah blah copies, so why make it go for so long, when the people who were here the first day watching for it are the ones who deserve a better chance at it... if someone has school or work, then oh well tough luck.

10 hours to 24 hours should be the limit when it comes to dev/featured giveaways... makes it fair to people who pay attention to this site

its always like 3 to 7 days..... aint nobody got time for dat.

edit

for the record this isnt about myself wanting better odds of me winning, i havent even entered and dont plan to enter either of them, im talking about the people who enter early should be the ones who should have better chances

How about no?

The point of them is not for YOU to win, it's for everyone to get a change. Since they are so special they should maybe be 1 week in length, don't you think?

yea and what about the 10000 people who actually want the game then the other 10000 who want it for illegal reasons like i said its not fair

Yes, it isn't fair. They should last at least a week.

I have no idea what you mean by illegal in this scenario.

It's absolutely normal that they run long. Their main purpose is not to give away x hundred games, but to gain publicity. Time in this case plays in the favor of the gifter.

1 decade ago

This. The point is to get gifter famous.

1 decade ago

The objective probably is to make people want the game, so giving them to only a select few while getting the word out over a long period of time is ideal.

Inspire devs to give more then.

Like with the 162 copies the Fortix devs will be doing once they have a dev account sorted.

And seriously, you should be thankful that you have the chance to win or gtf. .

^ Yep. The dev wants exposure, wants people excited about the game. The more people that see it for the longer time, the more people get interested in it, the more the name becomes familiar. Staring at the giveaway for 5 days is a small price to pay for thousands of keys.

1 decade ago
Permalink

And the devs should send each key to winners manually. You see, while winners wait they get more and more interested in the game, as well as all the friends etc.

If your really want a game you buy it. If you want it for free you don't complain. EVER. Every giver can set his own time and everything because he can. Steamgifts is just a tool for some nice people that wants to give something for free to other nice people.

Due to the fact that no one here is being very helpful, perhaps I can help explain why that happens. I would assume it's about advertisement for them. If they only did the giveaway for a day, they wouldn't get as much exposure as they would if they had it for a week or more. People like to think it's because they're being kind, but the real reason is that it gets the name of the developer and their product recognised. How many times have you looked at indie bundle 34124 and not recognised very many games from it? For me it's every time a BundleStars bundle comes around. People are less likely to actually buy games from developers that they've never heard of before. However, if they advertise on here with their "generous" giveaway, then people see that and their other games and think, "oh yeah, I remember that developer/game." Usually this is a positive memory, so the person is more likely to buy the game. People are just more likely to buy things that they're familiar with, even if there are some people who like new things. But hey, at least we have a chance to get free things.

tl;dr It's a business tactic, but at least we get to benefit from it.

Truth to be told, giving away 50, 100 or blahblah copies is not as easy nor as cheap as someone might think. So, yes, having a giveaway on top for three or four or five or blahblah days is good, but costly advertisement. Limiting the giveaway to 50, 100 or blahblah entries or giving someone advantage just because they were first there is probably one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard on SG. And I've been here since July 2011.

1 decade ago
Permalink

But you've got to think about the cost-benefit analysis here. Hypothetically, if you gave away, let's say 300 dollars worth of games. It's going to cost them less than retail, and I don't know what the true cost would be, but let's say 300. They spend that 300, but make 1000 or more of profit, it would be worth it. Of course they'd have to cut the cost of the materials out of it (production money, etc, though there wouldn't be bandwidth costs for the devs if they sold it on Steam), but they're still making money in the long run. Coca Cola and Pepsi spend billions on advertising, and I'm sure they don't make that money back right away, but they still end up making more than they spend on advertising. I'm sure in the case of soda companies the point is less to get people to know their brand (because who doesn't?), but more to pull customers to them and away from the other brands. However, the same theories are still applicable to indie developers, just on a smaller scale and in plain name recognition rather than keeping you from buying other indie games. Brands are easier to forget if they stop advertising. Name recognition is everything here.

tl;dr If they were going to lose money on it, they wouldn't do it.

don't like how they're giving away their stuff for free why not develop a game yourself. then you can give it away however you want. if you want to throw out free(well technically i guess it costs 50 copies) advertising by only letting the first 50 people see your banner thats up to you, these guys happen to have chosen to make it a bit longer for some inconceivable reason.

tldr their gifts, they disperse them how they see fit.
