i had some fairly cheap headphones that were really good, lasted alot and came with mic

Actually, you'll almost certainly get ten times the sound quality out of your money rather buying headphones than speakers...
It is way easyer and cheaper to build good headphones than good speakers... Unless you buy high priced low quality crap (like all razor stuff apart from mice) where you pay for the name, not the hardware.
Your average noname 40$ Headphones will always beat your average 40$ Speakers.

when I'm out and about i use standard iPhone headphones. no need for high fidelity while walking around a heavy traffic area.
for gaming i use my noise cancelling Panasonic headphones. they were relatively cheap £25/$40 and they work great. cut out computer noise and whatnot.
when I'm just casually watching a film i use Creative speakers with a sub. I got a set for my computer but i like the bass response so i got a set for my media box/tv.
that's what i use and it works for me

May not be about fidelity, a decent pair of in-ear phones would cut down on the ambient traffic sounds, so you don't have to blast your music to compensate. I don't know how loud you listen to your music, but if the traffic is as loud as I'm imagining, it's definitely going to help prevent hearing loss.

I have the Plantronics Gamecom 780 for gaming (around 60€)

I prefer speakers. I hate earbuds and I dont usually use my headset (I even bought a separated microphone to avoid using the headset)

My headset was pretty expensive, but in general I prefer headsets, whatever the cost. They block out (at least) some outside sounds, and they're pretty loud themselves. Most of the more expensive ones are made to be comfortable, too. Example, my headset has the oval-shaped ear-pieces, so it goes around my ears, not on top of them.
Not to mention, earbuds hurt when I put them in, and speakers annoy other people and most of the time I would be told to shut the heck up.

Headset. Though its mainly due to the fact that I live with other people and I do not like bothering others with sounds from a game I am playing or a movie I watch, or music I am listening to.
Also, the headset I use has fairly good sound to it, and would prob still use it if I lived alone or in a room with soundproof walls. Now if I had a surround sound speaker setup then I definitely would use that over a headset if I lived by myself and/or had soundproof walls.

Yes!
Okay, that didn't make enough sense. Headphones, earbuds, or speakers? All of the above, depending on the situation.
I use a 5.1 system for my PC most of the time, and use my headset for voice chat. But if I feel the need to keep things quieter, so as not to wake the neighbors or my daughter, I'll switch to the headset for output if I still may voice chat, or earbuds if I won't because I find earbuds to be more comfortable over longer periods of time. I prefer my 5.1 speaker setup though, since it has the best (and loudest!) sound output.

Headset.
Because I really like to hear music with decent quality, but I have lousy speaker...for reasons.
People can say, whatever they want, there ARE Headsets, which are decent for music, they just aren't that cheap and often not from "Gaming Hardware Companies".
So why an expensive Headset, but no speakers? Reasons.

I prefer headphones (over ears) for gaming. I use them for casual gaming and the more competitive games as well. Only time I use speakers is when I'm watching a movie, even then though, if I'm lazy, I'll just keep my headphones in.
I use earbuds for music.

I use turtlebeaches, but sometimes if my ears hurt ill just use my speakers, nothing special just 5 surrounding speakers

I have studio quality headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT880Pro.
a) I don't like the crappy sound of 99% of headsets.
(Ok, there are some from Beyerdynamic that get close to the quality of my DT880, but...)
b) I don't like the microphone dangling in front of my mouth
So, for all voice transmission and recording purposes I have a podcast micro on top of my desk (actualy on top of a shelf board above my monitors) that works perfectly well at a distance with even higher quality than most headset micros.

I just got my DT770Pro delivered today. Zalman mic. I have the mic hanging ~5" down the cord. 30dB boost and CD quality, sounds excellent. Doesn't bother me at all; I don't see or feel it. The headphones are amazing. I got the closed cans because I really wanted the sound isolation and didn't want sound leakage. Works well for that, and I very much so enjoy the sound. Using a Fiio E10 for it now, though when I have more money, I'd like to upgrade to a $200-ish sound card, probably. I'ma do more research in that area, though. Fiio E10 does a pretty nice job, though. It's definitely loud enough.
I used to have headsets, but really, when it comes to value, non-gaming > gaming, headphones > headset, and wired > wireless. Beyerdynamics are excellent, and the quality build really shows. Going from a largely plastic headset (Last couple were the Creative Omega Tactic3D $200 and Corsair Vengeance 1500 $100) to metal headphones is amazing in and of itself. Sound quality is excellent and the $8 mic sounds 3x better than my $200 headset's mic, lol.

I'm using my DT880 now for over 7 years (bought 2006), and it still works and sounds excellent. Of course I had to replace the velours earpads a few times, since they get stained after a while, its amazing how good the spare parts support from Beyer is... you can get every single part, even of the oldest models...
Also I modified my DT880 quite a bit, added a real-leather headband from a compatible Beyerdynamics pilot headset, because the pleather one of the DT880 broke down after a while. Also I drilled holes into the earcans, and added plugs for exchangeable cables. All in All I guess it will at least serve me well for another 7 years. At that point, I will probably go to a higher tier Beyer like the T1.
For portable listening, when the DT880 is to large, I also have a Sennheiser HD-25. Tough little device. My brother got one of those as well and uses it for gaming. Seems to work well for him.

Currently I use Headphones almost exclusively since I lived with other people. Don't want to bother them much.
I do prefer a really good well-arranged surround speaker with great sub-woofer if I can though. That's my plan for when I have my own house and enough money. I love the feels of bass on my whole body whenever there are explosions and stuffs.
But for now, Headphones is enough.
