While Dragon Quest 1 - 3 were released for the system, along with several of the Monster spinoff games, the formation he mentioned makes it unlikely to be that, as the games never have them in a formation other than a line following you.

I can't quite remember the name of this game, so I thought I'd ask you.
It was a game for the Game Boy. It was kind of weird. You had 4 characters, and you could set them up in any formation on the screen. There were classes to choose from. For example, you could have 2 warriors in front, a mage in back, and a healer behind the mage. I don't know if those were necessarily the classes of characters. Anyways, it had a birds eye view of the level, and your team of character was moving along to the right of the screen. I forget if it was released outside of Japan. Could anyone help me possibly? I've been looking for this game for 3 years since I saw it. Thanks!
Edit: Forget to mention- Your characters were firing projectiles at the enemies that they approached
