Private giveaways require you be given the link to the giveaway, either by being invited or by meeting certain criteria. For instance, you'll often see puzzles posted in the forums, where the solution will yield entry to a private giveaway. Group giveaways require that you are a member of the group to join. Some of these groups are open to anyone wishing to join, though these tend to have a large number of members. Other, invitation-only, groups may require certain criteria before joining. Many of these require that you make a giveaway upon joining and/or make a requisite giveaway on, for instance, a monthly basis. These groups frequently advertise here in the forums.
