Recently just then actually someone sent me a income request for chat and they offered me a free game for free...

Lol, I'm not 100% positive with this. So what do you think?
P.S He has yet to reply to my question.

Yup just got a similar message. Think to yourself, WHY do you need to login? Surely they can send you the "gift" or "key" as a message.

It's a phishing link DO NOT ENTER YOUR USER/PASS

Plus, whenever you see someone with Steam icon for avatar, it's 101% a scammer. Report him via report feature on his profile, block and remove him from his friendlist.

WARNING! IT'S A SCAM!
legit sites that use steam login for id reasons (like Steam Gifts) don't require to enter data at the site itself.
you are actually forwarded to the Steam site and after authentication returnd to the original site.

If you want to be totally safe, don't login via a redirected site. Manually login on Steam's website and then return.

So? That doesn't mean that non SG steam users are not getting targeted too.

Anecdotal evidence is not concrete proof of the bigger picture. They could be targeting thousands of non-SG users and just getting people you don't know.

I think it was pointed out often enough that this is a scam. But I want to add a safe way to see for yourself if it is a scam. Manually open up Steams website. Log in if not already logged in. Go to your possible scam site. Trustwhorthy websites like steamgifts provide you a login via Steam with a numeric ID. You won't have to enter something, just click on login. Nothing more. If it still asks for your mail/ID/password it's a scam.

That sentence looks to have been written by someone barely on nodding terms with the English language and its usage.

Undeniably, but someone has clearly gone to some trouble to produce a mock-up of a genuine Steam page here. You'd think that the least they could do would be to put a bit of effort into the text...

The sort of grammar, spelling and wildly erratic punctuation that would embarrass a two year old is all part of the fun in your average "Nigerian Prince" email, but I was hoping for a little more here.

I understand your point. If I was the scammer I would be ashamed of it. But I'm not so I am happy they aren't smart enough.
Edit: I never had a "Nigerian Prince" mail. :/ I bet they are funny.

Dear qwertz12:

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company has recently concluded a large number of contracts for oil exploration in the sub-Sahara region. The contracts have immediately produced moneys equaling US$40,000,000. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company is desirous of oil exploration in other parts of the world, however, because of certain regulations of the Nigerian Government, it is unable to move these funds to another region.

You assistance is requested as a non-Nigerian citizen to assist the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, and also the Central Bank of Nigeria, in moving these funds out of Nigeria. If the funds can be transferred to your name, in your United States account, then you can forward the funds as directed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. In exchange for your accommodating services, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company would agree to allow you to retain 10%, or US$4 million of this amount.

However, to be a legitimate transferee of these moneys according to Nigerian law, you must presently be a depositor of at least US$100,000 in a Nigerian bank which is regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

If it will be possible for you to assist us, we would be most grateful. We suggest that you meet with us in person in Lagos, and that during your visit I introduce you to the representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, as well as with certain officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Time is of the essence in this matter; very quickly the Nigerian Government will realize that the Central Bank is maintaining this amount on deposit, and attempt to levy certain depository taxes on it.

Yours truly,
Prince Alyusi Islassis

Excuse me, but can you remember what happened when you logged yourself into steamgifts.com? Have you entered your login information or did you just hit that steam button and it magically logged you in?

Permalink

We entered our login info not on the site "steamgifts.com/login (example)" but from steampowered.com/steamcommunity.com
So it is absolutely legit.

I don't get it. You're telling us that it's "possible" to get a message from a random guy on steam offering you free games as long as you enter a site to be legit?

If you once logged in to steamcommunity you don't have to enter your login when logging in to sites like indiegala or SG, you can login with a single click on a button. Those fake sites obviously always ask to enter your info instead of that 1 click button. I think that's what he's talking about.

Sorry about this engrish, i'm way too tired to think now lol

Yes it is a scam link, as you can see the link got ".somee.com". This shows that the link has a subdomain = Free Website hosting!

Take a look over here www.somee.com, (Somee) is a company which gives free websiste/forum hosting. The guy(scammer) just hosted a free website and created his scam website. None of the scammers is so dum* to create a premium website just to hack/scam people.

Puzzle solved! - Bump!

How could you ever trust a website that mimics Steam and asks for a login? Come on!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's damn simple to avoid these scam fails:
1.pay attention to the damn URL
2.why would you need to enter your email and your email's password on login all togheter with your steam id and password?
3.when you login on most "important" websites, pay attention on your browser's url/adress field. If it says trusted or secure or whatever, then you can login with no problems.

(was going to make a 4.pay attention to those site's english but since most of the scammed people don't have english as their first, they might aswell have worse language than the scammer itself.)
