Maybe old news to some, but just watching the Dr Phil show, and i know there are people out there with problems, i am sure she has a condition too that made her do it, but just found this kinda shocking.

"In a daytime television exclusive, the woman who says she shockingly chose to blind herself by dropping drain cleaner into her eyes to fulfill her lifelong dream of being blind will appear on DR. PHIL and THE DOCTORS to discuss her motivations for this drastic life-altering choice and the subsequent consequences that resulted from her startling decision. The story airs on DR. PHIL and THE DOCTORS on Thursday, November 5 (check local listings).

Jewel Shuping, 30, believes she has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a rare condition in which able-bodied people truly believe they are meant to be disabled. Shuping says her desire to lose her sight was so strong that as a teen she practiced blindsimming, the act of going through the world as a blind person by blindfolding herself, using a cane and becoming fluent in braille. To ultimately achieve blindness, Shuping says she eventually dropped drain cleaner into her eyes.

On DR. PHIL, Shuping, who says she is now legally blind and satisfied with her condition, tells her story of losing her sight and how it has affected her life. She also explains that she has had trouble being accepted into the blind community. Dr. Phil discusses the repercussions of Shuping’s horrific choices, examines some seeming inconsistencies in her story and exposes some very real truths about BIID. BIID Expert Dr. Michael First and ER physician and host of THE DOCTORS, Dr. Travis Stork, join the discussion to impart the full range of medical and psychological issues involved. Does Shuping regret her life-altering decision? If she had the opportunity to regain her eyesight, would she take it?"

"She also explains that she has had trouble being accepted into the blind community."

I could imagine. I feel like if I were blind I would be furious to hear about someone willingly blinding themselves.

Depends if you have been born blind or have gone gradually blind throughout life. If you haven't experienced seeing the world, there's nothing for you to miss.

That sounds really stupid. So people who have always been blind wouldn't/couldn't be furious?

Would be less, as you haven't known it. If it was a sound minded person who inflicted this upon themself, it's different, but that wasn't the case. It's no use crying over spilled milk, the deed was done, there's nothing we can change about it.

what you say could be right (if ever) only in a world where the blind individual is alone and isolated from other beings

I don't agree with you there.

Even if you were born blind I think you might have actually heard or been told how beautiful something is to see and you could possibly envy those who can see it.

Or whit a more basic instinct. People are know to want something they don't have, it can be anything from something small and meaningless to something really valuable, even more if the fact that they could not obtain it was not their choice.

It could also be seen in a more extreme way: if a terminally ill person was to see someone taking his own life, I'm talking about suicide, it could be plausible that he would not accept that fact easily or at all, even if the person who suicided was ill (depressed for example).

P.s. I hope that what I wrote wan't be seen as something negative or offensive.
Also if you have anything to discuss about what I wrote I'm open for it as long as the conversation remain a civil one. (The last phrase is not directed to the one I replied but to everyone.)

Envy is in our nature, we'll have it regardless of our own personal circumstances. Even if they were furious after hearing about this, it doesn't come and haunt them every single day (unless they've got problems themselves).

Why would you be furious over someone life choice?I also do not understand people who are blind turning there back on them, blind is blind no matter the cause.

I mean yeah in the end it seems a bit crazy but still i think someone who ends up disabled the reason should not really matter,i mean what if someone tried to harm themselves and ended up disabled should we banish them because it was done on purpose?I guess that is the norm these days for some which is to shun those who we do not agree with or like.

This person has a label but i find if the person is happy what does it matter how she ended up blind or the way,she could have just as easily made it seem like an accident then they would have been okay with it?I think some of those blind people are just furious because they still have not fully accepted they are blind or have some unresolved issue to care that much about how someone else ended up blind.

So, you're saying blind people aren't allowed to be angry at someone who made themselves blind on purpose?

"I also do not understand people who are blind turning there back on them, blind is blind no matter the cause."
Well this might differ from one individual to another, we're all frail imperfect human beings, and all have our own views. It's also pretty Utopian to think that any group of people should be caring and benevolent as a whole.

"...should we banish them because it was done on purpose?!"
That's a really fine line, it can be a hard thing to say what's on purpose sometimes. I knew a guy once who tried to shoot himself in the head for suicide (I didn't know him when he tried that) but it didn't kill him, rather left him paralyzed and needing a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

"I guess that is the norm these days for some which is to shun those who we do not agree with or like."
This is human nature, I believe we're all to a certain degree afraid of what's different, though in what degrees or ways might differ from one individual to another, with their views, experiences, etc.

Yea, you don't see them often. They tend to keep out of sight.

Saw that some time ago. As long as she is happy, who are we to say it's this or that. Even if she will regret her decision in the future, those are just the consequences of her own actions.

I agree everyone should have a right to have control of their own body, however she does put the costs of her "problem" on the community.
It could very well be just temporary happyness.

Her family and friends should've come to her aid sooner, but that might just be their afterthought now. We will see.

Anyone who maims themselves on purpose is mentally ill.
Her blindness affects everybody around her now, especially her family.

'M sure her family knew about her problems and her attempts. Hearing the family's side of the story would be interesting.

A while ago I watched a YT clip about a man who held one of his feet into dry ice to make it so that they would have to amputate it and succeeded in the end. He had this wish since childhood, he claimed, due to the same illness described in this thread. Must be weird to feel like that, right?

I'd doubt it'd feel weird to you if you felt that way. If you were born with this rare condition, and grew up that being all you knew, why can't the rest of the world understand? And it'd be all you knew. Though people may try to tell you feeling that way is unnatural, you may still be unable to accept that.

It can be hard to say however, whether conditions like this are brought on by your birth or snowballed indirectly over time through society around you/the internet and hobbies/interests. For example, we don't know if that guy just loved pictures of amputees so much that he developed that condition.

Well, in that clip it was shown that the guy had that wish from early childhood on, so it must be something within the person, not somehting that they have been influenced by from outside.

Anyways, what makes it so hard to understand for me is that I was born with a handicap which gave me quite some hard times in my life and made walking a chore. I was having surgery lately and all is developing really good, but I'm not a young person anymore and I can't help myself to think about what my life could have been so far if it wasn't for that handicap.
And here we have people with a perfectly healthy body mutilating themselves...

While I have developed an empathy for all kinds of conditions of the human mind/soul/body wholeness, this is one I find really hard to understand.

I remember watching that episode. It's a shame she didn't seek help before she did something this drastic and irreversible.

The one thing I found unfair, if memory serves me correctly, is that she collects aid from the government due to her blindness now. I wonder how she's allowed to do so considering she admits it was self-inflicted. Meanwhile, there's people out there who struggle to get support for their own disabilities (that are through no fault of their own) that prevent them from working and yet are not granted it.

To me any idea of willingly blinding or cutting of limbs, whatever, is just plain stupid, but well.. if people are happy with it there's not much to say. Hovewer I wouldn't expect acceptance from people who were born without something and never really had a chance to live and function normally.

Dr. Phil. That should explain it all. Just another made up crank story to promote his crap show that the masses of boobs with no lives and no sense of reality will just eat up. Any average individual with an IQ higher then their shoe size knows not to watch that crap.

I knew about this from other sources a while ago.

This person needed psychiatric help. Personally I don't care what a responsible adult does to him/her self, but, (a) this should be a valid exception to any assistance for the disabled, (b) it makes sense that she will be shunned by, well, everyone, and (c) what a fucking moron.

still, not as crazy as this guy

There's an extremely poisonous and deadly South American spider that likes to live hidden under the inside rim of toilets, so I hear. Every once in a while there's an internet hoax claiming this spider had migrated into the US.
